  • Ooh I wonder if this would work with the Philips GoZero unit for those that don't want to support the incumbent.

How do they fit 60 litres in that little thing ????

      Tardis technology.

    • It's a science-y thing. Take a gas, pressurise it, and you can fit a surprisingly large amount of it into a relatively small space. If you look up the expansion ratio of carbon dioxide gas you can work out volumes with some regular arithmetic.

I tried it with water, but didn't really get much more in…

That's because liquids are generally not compressible, hence why there's a whole industry based around hydraulics. Now, if you'd started with steam to begin with then you'd be getting somewhere…

            It worked with ice.

            • +3

@jv: Ah, that's because water ice has the unusual and confusing property of expanding in volume as it changes state from liquid to solid, unlike most other substances which generally become more dense as they move through state from gas to liquid to solid. Fun fact: if water didn't actually do this then ice wouldn't float, and therefore bodies of water that freeze in winter would fill up with solid ice - which would be a bad thing as all water would be locked up in an unusable form for sustaining life.

Will try and squeeze 60 litres of Carlton Draught into a pint glass…

@jv: Well, since beer is <85% water that won't work like you want it to. We've already established earlier that liquid water isn't compressible. However, if you're prepared to look at it from another perspective it may work…but it'll take you a while. 60L = 105.6 Imperial pints, so you could theoretically squeeze 60L into a pint glass…106 times over. It's just a question of semantics, I guess.

                    I'll get some frozen beer.

  • Nice timing as my one just ran out. I'm wondering, If I get a Sodastream cannister, will it fit into my Sodaking one? I would rather go with Sodastream cannisters as they're cheaper.

Does it have a gauge so you know how much is left?

You push the button and nothing comes out JV, it's really that simple.

          • @jv: At $30 a cylinder, have 2 on the go. My kids go through a cylinder every couple of weeks and we just swap the spare on each time.

I've implemented at JIT system at home. Prefer to buy things as I need them. It's has an API into price hipster to optimise purchase timings…

              • @jv: Serious?

                • @rokufan: Of course. You just need to calculate a lead time for each product and keep adjusting it based on usage. Once you know the lead time, you can calculate whether to purchase or not depending on the average discount amount of the product depending on it's discount cycle and how many normal distributions you are way from the lead time to purchase. It's pretty straight forward.

                  • @jv: You almost got me.

      • Nope, no gauge. You know when the gas has run out as it won't have enough pressure to carbonate the water bottle anymore.

Bought these from spotlight - one leaked constantly on refilling, the other leaked after being attached to the co2 reg (poor sealing surface, new nylon o ring). Attempted to swap in store and they tried to charge me for new cylinders. I pointed out the gas only price and they told me it didn't apply as they don't refill in albury. Went to big w and swapped them for actual sodastream brand - no leaks. They didn't have to do it, I was just polite and they obliged.

Soda king, not in my book.

    • Were you using them in a Sodastream machine? I have a SodaKing unit and my wife has one at her work. We have swapped maybe a dozen cylinders at 3 different locations (Spotlight, BigW and Foodland) so far without an issue.

      • +1

No, using them in homebrew - with tried and tested Kegland sodastream adapters (2 of, which neither leak with the same washers or adapters when used with the genuine sodastream bottles). The soda king also use the old valves and should be a piece of pie to fill, but alas that they are not.

    • More like soda-dunce.

  • +3

Yes, Sodaking bottles fit sodastream devices, but beware, the nozzle is a bit different - I find that the Sodaking gas bottles are more likely to overflow with the sodastream machines.

Also note that once you trade a sodastream gas bottle for a sodaking bottle, most places won't take the empty sodaking bottle to exchange back to a sodastream bottle. I have learned this the hard way.

Remove the plastic sleeve from the cylinder. Worked for me quite a few times.

      • If you look closely enough you'll see there's an identifying stamp on the shoulders of the cylinder as well. I highly doubt your average shop assistant will go to the trouble of looking that closely, but just be aware in case you strike the rare one who actually cares.

        • +1

Every time I have tried to swap one, they have scanned the barcode on the old one? But maybe if I take the label off I can find someone at Big W who actually cares little enough about the process to just let me swap. :D

        • +2

If you do get one that's picky, there's an easy fix. To get a good view of the stamped information on the shoulder of the cylinder it needs to be held up, with the light behind the person looking. Offer to hold it up for them as it can be tricky to get the right angle. Once they're reading the information, just bring the cylinder down again at high speed, right across their skull. Their concern for the manufacturer of the cylinder will drop immediately (as will they) and you can use this as an opportunity to just swap for whichever one you need.

Don't take unfair advantage of the situation by taking more than one cylinder. That would be dishonest and a terrible way to behave.

  • Is it compatible with the recent soda stream deal on eBay Tuesdays

The SodaStream Sparkling Water Maker spirit decor limited edition ??

    • +1

Would be in theory. All the sodastream connections are the same across the models.

That said, I would go the adaptor and a 2.6kg or 6kg cyclinder myself. Hate having to get these refilled all the time and it's pricey.

      • Yup was searching on youtube SodaStream hacks, found a video suggesting to buy food grade pipe, food grade adapter, and food grade co2 canister so it works out way cheaper in long run.

But I personally never tried SodaStream before, so would try it first.
Honestly never even had co2 water, will try high possibility I won't like it and end up giving to a family or friend if I don't like it.

        • If you find you like it, the adapters are $50 from kegland in victoria. A 6kg tank with adapter about 180 delivered to sydney.

  • So are these it or do I have to buy something else for the liquid

    • You just use plain water for the liquid. If you would like to add flavours there are certain flavours you can buy for sodastream and sodaking or even simple cordial can be mixed with carbonated water.

Note you do need the machine itself be it a Sodastream or Sodaking to expell the CO2 into the water.
