My first post… Wish you could enjoy

      Good find!

Great deal, but it’s 256GB of storage, not ROM. ROM is Read Only Memory, and clearly storage is not read only (some retailers may use this terminology, but it’s wrong)

      • Yeah, its the chinesenglish thing of asian websites thats bled into western habbit of cut'n'pasting info alas.

I think we all know what they mean, but if often give my a brainfreeze as its confusing!

  • A friend has 1 and while the phone is great overall including the camera setup, he just says that the screen doesn't get bright enough for outdoor visibility in the sun.

    • Haha maybe the common issue for amoled? Or just the issue for this phone? Not too sure

      • Yeah common enough but my Poco F2 Pro used to get bright enough and had really good viewing angle even in direct sunlight.

        • -1

Xiaomi is good. Poco i saw $3xx for Snapdragon 888 Or 860 posted here befor. Really good brand Miaomi. I believe better than Huawei

      • +5

Super AMOLED is supposed to be brighter than IPS (the reverse was true years ago), but it depends on how the manufacturer configures the amoled panels. Many manufacturers artificially limit the brightness so that it doesn't chew through the battery as fast so they can claim the phone has a super long battery life

e.g the samsung made Super AMOLED panel on the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is brighter than the one found on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The peak brightness of the Xiaomi is insane at 1700 nits, while the Galaxy is 1500 nits

        • Is there IPS Screens used except IPHONE for phone screen ? i thought IPS screen are iphone special or something.

          • -1

@Leooooooo: IPS is only on the Iphone XR and Iphone SE…

          • +5

            @Leooooooo:

i thought IPS screen are iphone special or something.

            Apple is not so special…

            • @[Deactivated]: I know, but when back to iphone 5s days they really secure all the IPS screens and its apple start to use that on phone, if I don't remember it wrongly.

              • @Leooooooo: IPS has been used on so many phones long before the iPhone 5s……

          • +2

@Leooooooo: iPhone displays aren't special, they get their displays from another manufacturer.

for the iPhone 12, they went with china's biggest electronics display manufacturer
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOE_Technology

previously they also went with LG and Samsung.

        • I knew an engineer who said IPS LCD was more vibrant and colorful than OLED. He still wouldn't change his mind after seeing displaymate results and in the end it's what the customer feels that matters.

    • use a kindle

    • It's not only this phone. Samsung S21 isn't bright enough either compared to Pixel 4 or Huawei P30. Can hardly use it for GPS navigation due to that. Seems year 2020 models are all flawed. Covid or chip shortage to blame, I don't know, but there's nothing worthy to buy as of now.

      • S21 with auto brightness turned on or manual brightness?
Nothing I’ve read backs up what you’re saying

        • +1

          Yes, with auto on.
I'm frustrated as well as reviews measure lower brightness in nits for Huawei P30 compared to Samsung S21, but the fact remains - I struggle with S21 in the car, whereas with Huawei P30 there were no problems. In all honesty, S21 is a flawed phone, no wonder Samsung is throwing so many promotions to get rid of it.

          • @beesider: Can you compare yours to one in a store to see if it is faulty?

            • @ChadHominem: I did. S21s look the same in store, just the colour temperatures vary a bit.

Anyone know what Vivo's android support is like?

  • I cancelled my Poco F3 last week. So this is great.

    • Why?

      • -8

        Because people said MIUI sucks.

        • +1

MIUI is great. Let's you play YouTube with screen off :)

          • +10

@bobzor: I can already do that without MIUI. It's called YouTube Vanced

            • @Pikaloo: I moved from OnePlus to Xiaomi
I would say MIUI is slightly better overall. Snappier. No issues thusfar.

            • -2

@Pikaloo: Or you can just use the browser and tick desktop site, no need to install anything.

          • @bobzor: Hahah that's a free YouTube premium lol

          • +1

@bobzor: YT Premium is $3.50 for a Family 6-person plan if you setup payment with free VPN thru India. You get Indian recommendations for a bit until your viewing history clears it up.

            • +1

@Jimbuscus: I still haven't got this to work… What VPN do I use?

        • +1

But you can use a third party UI? Id never pick an inferior phone based on just UI.

        • Not sure if this is the better option….

  • +2

not worth it the POCO F3 is better in every way

    • +4

Local stock/warranty? That's one way this is better I guess. :-)

    • Better UI

    • +1

how's the camera comparing both ?

      • the main selling point is the gimbal cam
but F3 is almost 2x the performance

  • +3

This or redmi note 10 pro? I want the phone with the better camera.

    • +1

      Go Samsung/Pixel/Iphone for better camera.

      • Samsung , Apple and Pixel phones comparable to the redmi note 10 pro cost at least $100 more , the closest being the samsung A52

        • Iphone SE $499. Iphone XR $400 something? Samsung S20 FE slightly higher? Pixel 4A? Pixel 3?. Most within price of this Vivo.

          • @[Deactivated]: The Redmi note 10 pro is $280 USD which is around $400 AUD with gst

            • @boxpizza29: Your choice. Flagship camera's rarely ever get beaten by a midranger.

            • @boxpizza29: My Redmi note 10 Pro was $358 delivered. Great phone which I prefer to the iphone 11's my wife and daughter have.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Where are you getting an XR for $400? Cheapest appear to be closer to $700.

      • More specifically, look at a refurbished flagship from a year or two ago.

    • If you don't need 5G, and need to buy from jb for some reason (gift cards etc.). Maybe consider the realme x3 superzoom?

      • Got this phone, rate it highly. Good speed and specs and overall a well rounded device for a similar price point without 5G.

    • This video may give you some useful information.

fyi; no water or dust resistance or microsd slot

    • I believe it has micro sd slot though

  • +5

I have this phone, it is excellent. Regular system update, about every 2 months since Sept 2020. I’m a light user, battery lasts about 2 days. Build quality is amazing, feels really premium.

    • +1

      Did you pay $999?

      • I paid $948 on launch day, but I got a Fitbit watch for free which I sold for $250.

        • +2

          $999 seems out of wack,

        • +3

i hope you paid with 28 degrees. Time to get $448 back.

        • You're lucky because they're garbage watches atm.

        • lol ozbargain is proud of you

  • +3

The processor is a bit older considering some snapdragon 880 phones are about to come out at around this price point. The camera and cymbal seems to be it's strong point here.

  • Operating SystemFuntouch OS 10 Global

    Anyone had experience with 'funtouch'?

    • +1

it's fun to touch? haha. Personally never used it but videos suggest it's a bit 'gimmicky'

    • +2

      My wife has.

  • +1

Update! think twice before buying this phone!

    https://theloadstar.com/hong-kong-air-cargo-ban-on-vivo-phon…

    • So it means I can retire after the lawsuit?

      • +1

Nah you've been warned on OzB. "Buyer was fully aware". :-p

        • sshhhhh

    • +1

That could have been anything causing that fire.

      This is more concerning…

but the biggest scandal involving the company came last year when Indian police found more than 13,500 Vivo phones using the same IMEI number – a 15-digit code that should be unique to each phone.

      • Somone stole my phone. Block IMEI, 13.500 angry customers. Nice

    • Ok. So the plan is to buy this phone, use it for 12 - 18 months when it's time to upgrade and hopefully it will self combust and claim it under warranty. Might need some help for that to happen. Any suggestions ? Charge it up in the microwave ?

  • +1

I've been looking at this phone, thanks OP, great find!

The new version has come out, the X60 pro, which gets very good reviews, and cost 50,000 indian rupees, so about $900.
The X60 pro+ is a bit nicer apparently but loses the gimbal on the main phone and so for video might not be worth the extra 20000 re.

For $500 this phone was well received and in particular the gimbal system on the main camera was well regarded, and apparently is great for video.

On the 23rd the Mi Ultra 11 coomes on the market in India and other places and this might lead to a further drop in these prices but prob not much lower than $500.

    • you reckon JB will drop this lower ? but probably no stock by then

      • Usually happens when there a couple left in the state. Like the p30 recently.

  • Damn, this could have been the perfect phone. Slow USB 2.0 is annoying for something without a SD-Card slot.

  • Thanks! Got one. My p20 pro is about to die.

  • Processor Snapdragon 765G

This is their 'Pro' model? WTF.

  • how's this compared to oppo find x2 lite , same price

    • I'd say the vivo is better. Much better camera, screen, design etc

  • How is it compared to iPhone 12 pro max seems to be a lot of people comparing it, they say this phone has better camera? Are the specs and everything really better than latest flagship phones? It’s cheap if really is.

    • For a $499 (locally sold) phone it has great specs, camera etc (better than any in that price range most likely), but no not better than iphone 12 pro max

      • How is it for gaming, is hardware any good?

        • It will be good enough, especially at that price point.

          • @OZTechGuy: Cool, doesn’t seems to have any flaws that if compared to iPhone 12 pro max?

            • @DEvok: I wouldn't expect performance to be close to the iPhone at all, but as i said earlier, at this price point its excellent and im sure itll serve well. I would say this is better than purchasing say the new Samsung galaxy A52/A72 (minus the IP rating stuff).

  • Is this Dual sim? Thanks

    • +1

      Yes

  • -2

CPU is old and quite weak one, 870 is like twice as faster.

    • +5

If you can get that processor in a locally acquired phone for $499 then wow
