Tesla driverless car crashes into tree and bursts into flames in Texas, killing two
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-19/two-dead-tesla-driver…

Idiotic, if true, no one being in the driver's seat. Surely that must be illegal, even in Texas, until the technology is foolproof (if it ever is).

    • +1

Apparently, it is legal, even if nobody is in the car!

      a) An automated motor vehicle may operate in this state with the automated driving system engaged, regardless of whether a human operator is physically present in the vehicle.

      (b) An automated motor vehicle may not operate on a highway in this state with the automated driving system engaged unless the vehicle is:

      (1) capable of operating in compliance with applicable traffic and motor vehicle laws of this state, subject to this subchapter;

      (2) equipped with a recording device, as defined by Section 547.615(a) , installed by the manufacturer of the automated motor vehicle or automated driving system;

      (3) equipped with an automated driving system in compliance with applicable federal law and federal motor vehicle safety standards;

      (4) registered and titled in accordance with the laws of this state;  and

      (5) covered by motor vehicle liability coverage or self-insurance in an amount equal to the amount of coverage that is required under the laws of this state.

Elon Musk once said that driving (i.e. by a human, with no AI assistance) would be illegal one day. That day has not yet arrived.

    • In Texas they should shoot this Tesla and the man involved. In the town square!!!

        • I'd like to know how that car can drive itself without someone in the drivers seat first…
You'd think that would be one of the safety features…

          • @jv: How is not the question. WHY in the world do we still need drivers for cars? ?The tech is mature enough to dispense the drivers. The software needs to be fixed immediately.

I want all sleepy/lazy truck drivers removed first and streamline our food deliveries.

As we can see from the link above, the tech is certainly dispensing the drivers.

              • +1

@jv: Human Drivers dispense themselves and others everyday. Tech dispensing drivers is fine.

We just need to make sure that tech is at least slightly safer than humans. Once that's confirmed we won't need human drivers anymore. Infact it would be criminal to use human drivers if tech is safer. I wouldn't want some sleepy fool driving when I am on the road.

Tech is fast closing down on taxi drivers first but then truck drivers.

I am saddened that Toyota has been late to the game. They had their heart set on fire with the hydrogen concept. The fuel companies loved that idea because they can re use their gas stations.

Sad the fuel companies are not thinking laterally and including charging stations at their gas stations.

My guess is that it will be at least 50k if not 60k.

I'd rather get a Tesla if that's the case. By 2025 when Toyota start to sell these, my Tesla will drop everyone in my family off to work and return home to charge via solar and then pick us all up in the evening. Luxury? You decide.

@apiecost: Tesla Autopilot can NOT drive without lane-lines or ones that are faded.

Shows where the tech currently is today for full autonomous driving. If your buying a Tesla for this gimmick you will be disappointed.

                • @[Deactivated]: You're talking about autosteer which is a tech specifically designed to be used where there are lanes marked outsdide of city areas. It comes with the car, and is pretty good. Nobody will say it's perfect, however 90% of my highway driving uses Autosteer/Autopilot and I have zero doubt that having it engaged saves lives as it does sometimes react to events faster than I do / would have.

The "Autosteer for city streets" is a completely different tech currently being tested by a few thousand people and can be seen by watching some YouTube videos if you search "FSD beta". They are not even close to being the same thing, but you seem to be confusing them. If you're basing your opinion of what FSD will be able to do based on your knowledge of Autosteer, then your opinion will be poorly informed.

I don't see how this is relevant to your links about Tesla LIDAR though?

The next FSD beta doesn't use LIDAR or RADAR.

                  • @apiecost: Many German and Japanese cars have auto-steer for highway driving. Nothing special and have used it many times.

"In general, the most advanced available technology in new cars from Tesla, General Motors and Mercedes-Benz is capable of steering, accelerating and braking in certain circumstances, but their ability remains limited and drivers are supposed to continuously pay attention to the road. "

"In effect, that means Autopilot can be activated on roads that are too complicated for it to safely maneuver"

        • They are direct unedited "quotes" from the articles. You obviously don't like any news critical of Elon Musk or Tesla.

Why do you continuously post nonsense about how good a Tesla is with no evidence or news items to back them up when it is fact they build poor quality vehicles and Elon is a crook ?

This warranty issue is very worrisome!!!

I am going to wait a little more and maybe get the BZ4.. from Toyota.

        • interestingly enough, since the car has very few moving parts (tesla has around 17 moving parts vs ~200 in a conventional car) there hasnt been much needed to be fixed within the basic car coverage aside from wheel alignments, wiper replacements and brake caliper lubrications. If it were the battery warranty that went down (which is currently 8 years.), then i'd be worried.

          • @eleon00: Still a little worrisome though. I am massive fan of self driving cars and hate human drivers, but reducing warranty is not the greatest move IMHO.

I agree with your sentiment about simplicity of an electric car. I am biding my time before I get one but can't really pay $50 for some Hyundai or god forbid $50k for a crappy Nissan leaf.

$50k for a Tesla would be a sweet spot even with a 4 year warranty.

People are paying 60k for Toyota Rav4 so the luxury argument is null and void.

This one feature should be included in ALL cars now as it essentially becomes a black box recorder for all accidents / bingles

Cost is not much, just a hard drive and a few camera

I am hoping that the German industry is punished severely for their inaction to produce better electric cars. Dieselgate didn't punish them enough. VW especially got off scott free even though they were a bunch of crooks who manipulated emissions when they knew they were killing the earth. Now VW is pretending that never happened. :)

      • Although the doco is 1.5 years old and before Covid and Woke nutters, it was good to see VW driving forward with their Electric goals ahead of other German car makers

I like the 1.2 meter wide display screen in the SUV shown

Despite missing out on the 4k discount, I am still overjoyed with this purchase. The instant torque, the simplicity of one pedal driving, the brilliance of autopilot and fsd beta, the extremely low maintenance, and the convenience of not having to refill at a petrol station far outweigh all the negatives. If you get a chance to test drive one, do yourself a favor and try it! I couldnt recomment it any more. If anything, think of it like driving like a super car on a budget. Its not an expensive mid tier sedan. Its an inexpensive super car.

I know tesla can be polarizing to most (just read the comments) and I do not wish to participate in such vitriol, but i am happy to answer genuine questions.

@Naigrabzo: ha! that'd be nice! i think thats the reason they were prototyping robotic arms for the charger at one point - car drives you to work, comes home and charges itself. all speculation now. but they are putting in robotaxis in the pipeline so summon from garage to work might not be that far fetched. :)

    1) i dont think ive had it go down to empty (which is actually bad for the electronics). charging time will be different for each since not all wirings are done the same (single phase, 3 phase, etc). i drive around 30-50kms daily which uses around 7-10% of the battery and i generally plug in after i come home. the next morning, its ready for the new day. not having to get out of my way to pump petrol is sweet convenience. we did take it out for a spin to adelaide and had to stop at super charger stations to top up (horsham and keith from melbourne) and it took around 30 minutes at each stop for us to continue - just enough for loo breaks and meals.

    2) i havent had very cold days (no snow here in melbourne) but i'll make sure to note down when it does. i havent noticed any range drops during hot days.

    3) fit and finish of my made in china (mic) model 3 is pretty good. the paint is nicely done and i havent even noticed any panel gap issues. most reviewers say the mic tesla model 3 is actually far superior to the one made in usa. i cant really say how since i dont have the american model for comparison. but heres one aussie bloke who did compare both side by side

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49yyMkQ4ono

    4) the internal finish is so so. the liner is textile; i would have liked an alcantara liner which they used to come in with but alas, none for us due to supplier issues . the seats are vegan leather which feels svelte to the touch. i love the sun roof but at times, aussie sun is too intense so i had to buy roof shades

    5) i did have an lte connectivity issue when i picked it up. i think they forgot to provision the esim or something but was all fixed in around 15 minutes. speaking of connectivity, ive had 2 updates since i picked it up, and i didnt even have to visit a service center! how cool is that!?

boy for someone who hates tesla, you sure do watch a lot of click baits :)

The link you posted was quite amusing by a Chinese fanbois talking about a CCP Chinese made Tesla. No bias to see here … lol

No other car brand besides Tesla that sells cars for $70k + do I know of that so many owners focus on panel gap issues and quality issues

I like the part where the Tesla Chinese fanbois is testing the Autopilot and then excuses it for not having the ability to "auto lane change" using Autopilot or Autopilot unable to go around a round about. Like the case Germany where they banned the use of the term Auto Pilot as misleading and deceptive for its inability to be a self driving car.

      • i am not trying to convince you or anything. but i did see where the bias is coming from, and its not in the video. what if a white person did the talking? will it make you a bit more comfortable?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV3rv4d9qUg

        • I prefer car reviews by car enthusiasts that drive various different cars and compares the pros & cons

Watching a YouTube video from some YouTube channel "Tesla Tom’s Ludicrous Feed" is hardly going to be unbiased. That's like watching a VW review from a YouTube channel named "Legendary VW Cars"

The new link you posted is the same, a Telsa car enthusiast. He starts the video with "…the usual questions are is the build better or worse …" Doesn't that tell you something about the Tesla brand ??

From the same reviewer you posted, he also tests an Audi E-tron vs Tesla

"Audi E-Tron 55 review by a Tesla owner. Would I swap? Side by side comparison v Model X S 3"
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjBidtgRkXE

Note how he compares the build quality of the Tesla X. I would buy the Audi E-Tron if I was choosing a new electric car.

            happy bargain hunting

            • @eleon00: There are 3 main items that I need to have resolved, and once I know these are not an issue then I will be sold on buying an electric car.

              1) How long does it take to Fully Recharge a Tesla 3 using your Home Electricity outlet from Empty ?
              2) Does the driving range (km) magically drop in half/other on very cold days / hot days ?
              3) What is the cost to recharge a Tesla from home electricity (non-solar) vs Petrol (2L 4 cylinder turbo) ?

If you are able to provide your real world experience with the above 3 that would be great

              • @[Deactivated]: 1) as i mentioned, filling up an electric car is different from filling up a petrol car. i dont have a reason to let it go down to empty. i drive, i come back home, and i plug in. on certain days where i drove a lot, it would take 1-2 hours from 75%. on other days, it takes 30 minutes. but who cares? as long as its ready the following day, i dont mind even if it charges the whole 12 hours its in the garage. i only drive 50kms max a day and charging at home cannot be any more convenient. if i were driving 480 kms daily, i would probably get a higher watt charger and it would still make it to full charge the next day.

                2) it doesnt. i havent driven it to mount baw baw to notice any difference in range when in snow. i also havent seen it drop range on hot days. if you use the airconditioning or the heater, sure it will shave off a few kms here and there. but which car doesnt? petrol cars do the same.

                3) i recharge at home. i have 19 cents/kwh electricity rate. to charge it full from empty, it would cost me 11 aud. that is, to drive 480 kms, it would cost me 11 dollars.

                • @eleon00:

                  1) i come back home, and i plug in. on certain days where i drove a lot, it would take 1-2 hours from 75%

What phase is your electricity at home ? 1 Phase or 3 Phase ?

Are you connecting to a standard 240v home outlet to recharge the Tesla ?

                  3) i recharge at home. i have 19 cents/kwh electricity rate. to charge it full from empty, it would cost me 11 aud. that is, to drive 480 kms, it would cost me 11 dollars.

How did you calculate $11 to fully recharge your Tesla Model 3 from Empty ?

What is the capacity in mAh of your Tesla 3 battery ?

                  • @[Deactivated]: the car has 54kwh battery. to fully charge a 54kwh battery, it would cost you 10.26 ~11 dollars

                    • @eleon00: I can't correlate how fast you say your home charging is when this review from a major car magazine that has long term tested a Tesla Model 3 states:

                      https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a35152087/tesla-model-3-ch…

"It charges the Model 3 and Model S at a rate of around three miles of range per hour, which means a full charge takes many days to complete."

They clearly state "many days" to fully charge a Tesla Model 3 from empty so your statement of charging from 75% to 100% in 1 hour does not seem right when its charging at 4.8 km of range per hour ??

                      • @[Deactivated]: i do have a level 2 charger at home which gives me around 40 kms per hour of charging

                        • @eleon00: That helps thanks @ 40 kms/h charge rate overnight will be 400 km which seems good

Unfortunately I couldn't find reference to a 'level 2' charger on the Tesla website

                          https://www.tesla.com/en_AU/support/home-charging-installati…

But found details on another website explaining Level 2

                          https://jetcharge.com.au/resources/electric-vehicle-models/t…

Which Level 2 of the above do you have and how much did it cost to setup a Level 2 at home ?

@[Deactivated]: i have the 7 kwh/32a eo universal charger. the charger itself is around 1450 but you can probably get the mini version that retails for 950. installation varies but will generally be around 500-2000

    Thanks Op!

  • The market is starting to get competitive

"The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will enter production at GM's plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee in the first quarter of 2022, with American prices to start from US$59,990 (AU$77,800) – undercutting the entry-level Tesla Model X Long Range by US$20,000 (AU$26,000)."

    https://www.drive.com.au/news/2023-cadillac-lyriq-revealed-i…

    • Doesnt have any standout "looks". It may not sell too well. We shall see.

      • A fully Electric SUV for US$20,000 (AU$26,000) less than the Tesla Model X without the nonsense gullwing doors will sell very well

Or maybe you would prefer a fully Electric Audi e-tron SUV for $32,000 than the Tesla Model X in Australia

        Audi e-tron: $149K DA

Telsa Model X Long Range: $181K DA

        • 30k AUD for an audi electric car 🤣🤣🤣
          You must be smoking.

They are all $100k plus my friend.

          • @shegeloaf: That was meant to read $30k less than a Tesla. But you knew that right 🤣

    • Competition is good. Always will have a competition leader.

  • Where would one charge an Audi E-tron if I am travelling from Canberra to Sydney for example?

    • Ask Audi when you go an test drive one

      • They said to check the internet.

        • So you went to test drive an Audi E-tron ? How was it ?

  • "$TSLA is burning money. This is not a viable business model and they are losing share in Europe in China. Their sales in the US were down"

    • Haha you wish you had some shares though. :) Buy some dude.
