        • Those come frequently and get sold quickly. So far I’ve picked up a 16gb/512 MBA and 16gb/256 mini.

  • I've been looking to get the MacBook Air/Pro M1 and wonder if I should pull the trigger with these refurbs or wait until the MacBook Pro 14 gets released sometime in June 2021? I believe the MBP14 will take the next price position after MBP13 which starts at $2999. Or will they totally replace MBP13?

Having the MBP in 13, 14 and 16 seems a bit redundant. I bet the 14 inch has smaller bezels and just kicks out the 13.

I'm waiting for the 14. The rumor of it replacing the 13 and including more ports with the M1X chip make it interesting.
The 16 is too big to carry around.

        • Man if they just added one USB A and a card reader that would finally shut people up about dongles

          • +1

@Merlict: What about us HDMI cable users! We demand a HDMI port!

Side note, I'm quite happy to use a dongle

      • Would be awesome if that is the case and to hold on to my current MacBook Pro 15 from 2017. I just hope it doesn't start at $2999.

Just wait for the next Apple event. So much could change overnight.

Can always just return it. Apple allows free returns.

  • Thanks OP!

I literally placed an order for a 16gb/512gb MBA yesterday for $2070 (edu discount)

The 16gb ram version is no longer available but I realized it is probably unnecessary after seeing all the benchmarks online so I've cancelled and gone with the refurbished 8gb/512gb version.

Thanks so much, you saved me $400!

  • Slightly unrelated but does the M1 MBP have a good enough camera to record zoom calls/interviews? 720p doesn't sound promising.

Or am I better getting a Mac Mini and buying a 3rd party web cam?

    • Check footage on Youtube. I assume it's crap, just like all laptop webcams really.

    • As Merlict said, all laptop cams aren't crash hot. But, the 720p on the new macs ain't bad. They use ipad camera software now. It looks fine. It's decent enough for zoom and stuff. It's just disappointing for a premium product in 2021.

      • Oh I have a 2018 iPad Pro. I didn't even think to use that for zoom recording. I believe the camera quality is 1080p so I guess I'm better off with the Mac Mini.

  • What's the price difference btwn new and refurbished? I checked and found that it ~ $300 in general. That't not worth it. I prefer to pay that amount and be the first person who touches the keyboard

    • Im sure they replace it. They just class it as refurbished if the box is opened

  • Do yall think it will drop lower in financial year sale? Not sure if i should wait

    • Probably not. If they release new models this year (kinda doubt it on the budget line) there could be deals.

  • How can they call it MacBook Pro and ship it with 8gb ram? Teams + VS Code + 2 browsers going will easily chew it up. Should be 16gb base and then upgrade to 32gb on the next model up for the Pro lineup, this ain't 2007 anymore.

In my work laptop (X1 Extreme) it shipped with 16gb (2x8gb) and I got a great deal on 2x32gb module from Amazon's Black Friday sale last year, running 64gb and have only maxed it out once when running too many VMs at once. Wish Apple didn't insist on soldering the memory on all their new devices.

Hopefully with the shift to restoring ports on the laptops they will also bring out some Pros with user upgradable RAM so I could upgrade one to 32gb

I noticed these have 8 cores. Can you mine cryptocurrency with these? Any good for it?

  • Maybe from MacBook Air m1 with failed SSD ( surely it’s fixed by now )

  • MacBook Air M1 is now 1499 retail at Apple store. Education is 1349. I wonder why they reduced it? Did they sell out of the Intel version and now they think they should reduce it because people are forced onto M1? Or maybe M1 has problems? Or currency changes? Maybe it's not selling well? But I heard the M1 was selling great. Maybe Apple are pressing home the M1 advantage to get everyone on their ecosystem? That's what I would do if I were them - sell the entry-level product cheaply and then when the M1x comes out, they can kill Intel and Windows.

The new M1 mini is available with 10GBe networking now, which is a game changer for us. Doubt will see many show up in refurbs though.
