What is your NBN speedtest result to USA?

My Vodafone NBN 50/20 plan is very slow downloading US-specific content (content not cached in Aus). The download speed I get from this US speedtest is 8-9Mbps. The pipe size ISPs purchase for overseas traffic (transit traffic which is much more costly than local peer traffic) contributes to the difference in the cost of plans and quality of service we pay for.

To compare ISPs I would be interested in your results from the US speedtest. Please set the city to Los Angeles. Could you kindly specify your - ISP, plan speed, result (down/up)

Using my example:
Vodafone, 50/20, 8/15 (yes upload is much faster)

Thanks

Canberra - it's pretty disappointing seeing what everyone else is getting.

Recently I've seen some really poor Steam download speeds. A single 15 gig game download fluctuates between 100kb/s and 3mb/s haphazardly over the entire download. I'd be okay if there were some flat periods of 3mb/s but it gets there and immediately tanks.

      • What technology are you on?
There are quite a few TPG Telecom posts and your speeds don't correlate to what others are getting.
Are a fibre to node NBN?

        • HFC.
Are you implying that Vodafone NBN performance should be similar to TPG NBN because of common ownership of the companies? I did wonder that too and was hoping to get TPG performance eventually. Still waiting.

  • Did you purposefully pick a server with bad routing from Australia?

I'm on TPG 100/40 and my speedtest on this site is 12.1Mbps down / 2.4Mbps up.
    https://i.imgur.com/Z4fBmeo.png

Meanwhile from a proper Australian server still getting good speeds

I guess going by your post TPG/Vodafone both share the same LA route.
Goes to show how bad overseas peering is in Australia. Both tests done right now over 1gbps ethernet.

Edit: When connected to NordVPN melbourne I get similar speed but when connected to NordVPN sydney I get 35/5 on the speedtest, double the speed I got without the VPN.

  • Launtel 50/20 HFC, 15.7/9

  • Tpg ftth 100/40

  • Thanks all for responding. I hope it was an interesting exercise. From the results posted the poorer performers where USA traffic is less likely to reach your prescribed speed were (in no particular order):
    Lets Be Mates
    Superloop
    Aussie Broadband
    Exetel
    iiNet
    Launtel
    Vodafone

Looks like Telstra will give you the best performance if you can afford it.
Obviously this is not a real test so don't take this post too seriously. Also, the majority of residential traffic (Netflix, YouTube) is cached locally so I imagine slow speeds to USA will only affect people infrequently.

I finally joined a VPN tonight, my new results:47.4/18.4

  • TPG 50/20 plan HFC at 6 AM to LA: 90.2 downstream / 23.6 upstream

  • Tesltra NBN HFC to LA -> 262.8/23.4

  • Aussie 250/25

    269.9/4.3

(I'm currently uploading stuff hence the poor performance)

  • SL 100/40 FTTN

    LA - 84/34

  • Exetel, 50/20, 22/8.1
