Cheap Android Mobile Phone (Under $50) for Side-Hustle

Hi OzBargainers,

I'm looking for a cheap smartphone (< $50) for an addition to the one I already have, so turning to the resident experts for your help.

Am thinking of using it for my business side-hustle (keeping it separate from my personal phone and maybe as a backup) so it doesn't have to be too fancy, so as long as it has Google App Store capabilities, has enough battery power to last one day and has enough RAM / processing power that i'm not pulling my hair while waiting for it to load an app / / perform photo-editing, etc.

I have noticed some deals being posted for relatively affordable mobiles but they are still at least $100 and some may be locked to a specific Network. If I can get an unlocked phone that's the best outcome but wouldn't mind if it's locked initially and perhaps I could find solution to unlock it in the future.

Thanks for any help.

$50 and you want decent RAM and full day battery?

    Lol…

    Optus X Sight 4G Android 10 Smartphone

$69 with 2GB ram, locked to Optus

    Enjoy

If you can't manage to find $19 over budget to get that one, then here. Obviously you're not getting an Android for $29

Enough RAM & processing power that i'm not pulling my hair while waiting for it to perform photo-editing

      and

has enough battery power to last one day

He wants a Snapdragon 888 mobile with 10,000mAh battery for under $50.

    • Next (or maybe this time): Start w/ Dual-SIM 1st phone. ;~)

  • I wonder if anyone has ever purchased one of those random smartphones on AliExpress. For example, this:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002571148142.html?spm=a2…

Apparently it only has 1 GB of ROM but 8 GB of RAM?? But then the pic and specs say 4500 mAH battery but the title says 5200mAh?? And no mention of the CPU.

I don't trust AliExpress after I saw a Samsung S21 selling for the same price last week.

There are manufacturers who produce these low-end yet 'modern looking' phones that could be dressed up to look like knock-offs of well known mobile phones, to be sold on marketplaces where moderation is lax and the people buying from such platforms aren't savvy enough to tell the difference between a phone that has 1GB of RAM and 8GB RAM.

An example of such a platform is Wish.com, you'll see that if you do a search you'll see the exact same phones being sold but with outright fake specifications.

      • Thanks. Wish.com's cheap prices always scared me off, especially when looking at solar gear.

I've always had bad experiences with the quality of deliveries from AliExpress (despite OzBargain being full of defenders) but I've only noticed some fake ads recently.

Wouldn't a dual sim phone solve the problem?

    • Then you can't hide it when not needed?

      • Sure you can: DisAble its Side-Hussle SIM

        • 🤦‍♂️

    • Postage is OverPriced, IMO

But his Total well under $50

  • business side-hustle

so it doesn't have to be too fancy, so as long as it has Google App Store capabilities, has enough battery power to last one day and has enough RAM / processing power that i'm not pulling my hair while waiting for it to load an app / / perform photo-editing, etc.

tax deductible. Buy something competent if you're actually requiring it for $ earning potential

  • Maybe think about getting a decent phone with dual sim capability so you're not carrying around 2 phones and you still get to use a different phone, s9+ for example?

Otherwise if the side hustle is of questionable legality, then surely you'll be able to afford something more than $50 ;)

    • And Amazon

      2GB RAM…

      • thank you for the suggestions. I saw that and I wasnt entirely sure it's a good phone, I might just check it out … is 2GB RAM a good spec?

        • is 2GB RAM a good spec?

Of course not, but it's $50

          • @spackbace: bought it and expected to arrive today, so hopefully all good :)

  • Side-hustle or side-hussy? As a Huawei salesgirl once told me, the App Twin feature lets you install second accounts for the mistress on the same phone.
And you could use an app like Island which will clone any app under a work profile.

No need to get a second phone to run apps at all. If you really need regular calls and sms, you could just carry around a dumbphone.

  • This is called a "burner phone" because you intend to dispose of it after your nefarious activities are complete.

  • Don't expect too much for under $50, especially not an all day battery. See if you can find a refurb or a really cheap budget one online.
