Motorbike Flipped Sideview Mirror

Hi,

I am wondering what to do. I was in a big intersection on the right hand lane out of three lanes, the last light before highway. Waiting for the green light and then a motorbike passed by and flipped my passenger sideview mirror completely, didn’t stop. I honked and at the same time another motorbike passed, seemed like a buddy. But nothing.

First thought was should I run out quickly and push it back, but a green light came, all that within 5-10 seconds, then I wasn’t sure and called my husband quickly as we started driving from the same location 5 minutes ago, but he took a different road and was already ahead.

Anyway so I drove like that to the highway and needing to change a lane twice for my exit and after that I was in the same lane to my home.
So it was rather uncomfortable and I also had a sleeping toddler with me.

The mirror is a bit wobbly and a small scratch, so it’s nothing really serious in that sense. But the problem is the fact that he did it and drove away, he flipped it with his right hand side where he holds his hand, so you obviously feel it as the mirrors are tightly in place.

Anyway I got home and thought I do a police report as there are cameras everywhere and it’s two bikies at certain time, so it’s easy. But then I stopped, because I thought that maybe me calling my husband (dialled and put on loudspeaker) might be something they would pick on? And now I thought that maybe I should’ve just run out and flipped it back quickly, although I would’ve stalled the traffic, but even that is still dangerous, being on the side of all the moving cars.

So I suppose I am not sure, if I should report it, as I am thinking I should’ve just flipped it back right away, although there is a small damage to the mirror still and small damage to me (emotional, mental). They really should understand what is the right thing to do next time.

Thank you for reading!

To confirm, a motorbike drove through your car and knocked your rear view mirror upside down?
I'm not even mad, that's amazing

    • I wrote that the motorbike passed by, three lanes of cars are waiting at the red light and Bikes come inbetween the cars to get the light first.

Don’t want to be messing with Bikies. You reacted sensibly.

  • Would have asked for a 10-29 pronto.

    • Ok

      • 10-4.

    • 10-29: Time is up for contact (You are boring me and I don’t want to talk to you anymore).

Do you mean your external left side mirror? Your rear view mirror is the one inside the cabin on the front windscreen between the passenger and driver seat.

My answer; No, I wouldn't have gotten out to flip it back if it was not safe and you were holding up traffic.

Nothing you can do now, buy a dashcam for next time.

Edit: What did you expect your husband to do when you called him?

    • Thank you, sideview mirror yes, a bit of a long day has been.

You kind of panic for a moment and call the person you can depend on, to support. And he might of been behind me as we left with 30 second difference from that place and would’ve caught up and instructed to change the lane while being behind me. To make it as safe as possible.

would’ve caught up and instructed to change the lane while being behind me. T

Couldn't you just use your 2 other working mirrors, and the ability to turn your head, to work this out for yourself?

Come on now, someone hit your mirror, they didn't hold you up at gun point.

      Ms Paint diagram. :)

You remain in your car and pull over at the first safe location and then render your vehicle safe.
You do not exit your vehicle in traffic, especially if there is someone in the car that depends on you keeping them safe.

And then you curse and move on with your life.

    Bikies. Literally.

OP: Report it if it makes you feel better, at least you can then sleep knowing that you've done all you can.

What did your husband say when you called him?

Is the mirror actually broken? Most are designed to be able to be turned/flipped and can easily be reset to the proper position?

I want my 60 seconds back.

I got to “and small damage to me (emotional, mental).” and threw the whole post in the “oh, FFS” folder…

Would hate to see what OP would be like if something actually serious happened to their car.

      • Do you actually have a FFS folder in your bookmarks?! 😂

OP, you might want to reconsider driving if this kind of thing has an impact on you.
Consider how you would be impacted if you were in an accident.
On the scale of serious road happenings, this registers nil.

Did they intentionally knock it? If so you ram them with your car /s

But seriously get a dash cam!

  • Were you in the middle of your lane? I used to ride bikes for years and would lane split to get to the front (for safety reasons to get away from cars). In all that time I never hit a mirror so you must have been very close to the white line?

Ps I agree with all the other comments, it’s annoying but you did the right thing to keep driving and fix it later.

    • In all that time I never hit a mirror so you must have been very close to the white line?

Unless it was deliberate because the OP cut off/almost hit the motorcyclist without any awareness of the incident.

      • Yeah true it’s hard to say it’s it with the facts we’ve got.

  • Did the motorcyclist clip the mirror with their bike or did they actually grab it and fold it?

I wouldn't call the cops, this sounds like a job for the ghostbusters. Or the army. Or both.
