    • Would be great if OP indicated this in the title.

I don’t understand what’s meant exactly by having eBay “manage your payments”? What are the differences from the standard system?

    • +2

Old system uses PayPal. New does Not

      • +4

Old system also gave you money straight away, then charged fees at the end of the month.
New system holds the money for a few days, takes off whats owing and pays out the balance.

        • -3

Paypal gives you money straight away?? No way.
Paypal holds your money for 6 months+!!!

    • +1

In the old system you would receive payment directly through PayPal. eBay would send you a monthly invoice for seller fees
The new system eBay takes takes the receive payment from the buyer and then subtracts fees and deposits it into your bank account

      • Thanks. I see that it has a different set of fees — has anyone already checked whether one’s more beneficial than the other?

I don’t guess it makes any difference to the chances of being successfully defrauded by a buyer?

        • +3

Fees are a little lower if you account for both eBay and PayPal fees.
          old: 10.9% eBay fee + 2.6% PayPal + $0.30 PayPal transaction fee (13.5% + $0.30 total)
new: 12.55% eBay fee + $0.30 transaction fee

As for fraudulent buyers, I'm not 100% sure. I know PayPal will accept a chargeback up to 6 months after purchase while eBay closes transactions after 60 days. Not sure what would happen if a buyer files a chargeback through PayPal (buyer can still purchase with them) after 60 days.
I also recall seeing a comment that PayPal is registered with AFCA so you can go to them if you have a dispute with PayPal (I've done this once before) while eBay is not.

          • @FireRunner: Oh wow this looks bad then, i got my money back from paypal through afca after a few ebay scams. I wish i could go back to paypal system. Have some stuff to still. But i guess eventually they will no longer allow old sysyem ?

  • Updated but nothing about any confirmation? Guess have to wait until 26th?

    • Did they ask for driver's license? Reluctant to change over to ebay manage payment if they require too much personal info.

      • No just bank details?

      • Yes driver license and bank details.

A while back paypal required it too

        • Ahhh forgot.

        • Drivers license - wow eBay is getting very nosey these days

  • For seller is that mean eBay have the option to direct debit to your account if somebody ask for refund?

    • +1

Don't think so? Use diff bank account if worried one with $0 in it used as intermediatry before you send it to your Swiss bank account in caymans

      • Be careful, you might be charged overdrawn/dishonour fee by your bank if there's insufficient balance.

  • This more for buyers or sellers in regards to 'managed payments?'

  • +4

Their Managed Payment is a shamble. I have been using the Gumtree 2 free ads a month on eBay to sell stuff I no longer use. With Paypal, fee would cost me 2.7%, end of story. Ever since I moved to Managed Payment, eBay has been taking out the entire final value fee ~14%, every single time. Contacted support, they said fee will be credited back within 15 days, nothing happened. Contacted only to get the canned response someone will get back to me in 24-48 hours or it has been escalated. Of course nothing happened. Contacted them a week later, same canned response. It's been going for 6 weeks now…

This. I have a feeling they just want to stall and ignore until you eventually give up.

    • Yeah, thanks for the heads up. Just changed to managed payments recently. I will wait for eBay deals to sell, just got the “Pay $1 on final value fees for next 5 sales” so I guess I will use that instead off the gumtree trick if it’s going to cause less headache.

      • +2

Keep an eye on the final amount after your sale. I saw some other people here who had the same issue with the 5 ads for $1 offer, and have to prove they have the offer. It takes a bit of navigation to find the page that has the transaction and fee amount…

    • Have the same issue with a item I sold a few days ago, so I just need to wait out the 15 days and then hassle them again.
Frustrating as previously, it was automatically credited / not charged.

      • They are not gonna give credit after 15 days. They advisded to wait for another 7 days where they "escalate" and will get back shortly.

    • Got the same response about a week ago for something I sold. Was gonna wait out the 14/15 days but I can't see anything happening tbh, gonna try messaging them again, might even call them.

  • Does anyone know if we can have more than one managed payments account?
I use whichever eBay account has free listings, when I can. Sounds like they just want you to have one now?

    • They just want to record all sales made by an entity (for tax purposes)

  • Be aware that once you switched you can't just delete bank account

  • eBay have kept sending me emails to update the account details, but never mentioned the $20 promo on the email?
That means I'm not eligible to the promo?

    • same kept getting messages to update, only today got this deal was advertised on the home page, check your email/junk mail & banner on the homepage

      • So you got $20 promo mentioned on the email received?

    • Only today's email mentioned the offer.

      • Got ya. I am out then..

        • check daily, only started today so more may be targeted over coming days

          • @RogueWolf: Already updated today on 'non-promo' email received a couple of days ago..

  • I got an email on 18/5/2021, updated my payment details a few days later. Received $20 voucher yesterday.

On my other (main) account, did not received offer but saw the promo banner when I logged in today. Also updated, will see if I received one on this account also.

For people who have lots of (fake?) ebay accounts, please note that they ask your real name/address/phone, ID (license/passport) and bank BSB/ACCOUNT details.

edit: I am not associated with eBay, can't seem to untick. Anyone know how to fix???

    • Do you know if we are allowed to have more than one legitimate account with the new system?
I have kept multiple ebay accounts for many years and I can usually a promo I can use but if its just the one, well that limits the chances

      • +1

I believe so, I have 2 legitimate ebay accounts with the same address. One is in my name and other in my wife's.

I have read on forums that they are "associated" so if one get shut down or limits imposed, the other also gets the same.

        • Sorry the word 'find' disappeared from my above post but hopefully it still make sense lol.
I guess I will find out soon enough, they want me to do the change by June 18th

  • +1

Is there any option to go back to the previous system ?

    I'd gladly pay 1% more .

    • Doesn’t seem to be any option.

Furthermore, based on eBay’s emails they are saying that if you don’t update your account details by June 18 you won’t be allowed to list any more items plus they may even cancel any active listings of yours.

To summarise - after June 18, everyone will be either:

      1. Switched over to Managed Payments by updating their account details, OR

      2. Refuse to update account details and therefore will be a redundant seller on eBay (i.e. no longer able to sell)

So after June 18, no one should be receiving payments into PayPal anymore.

I wonder if these are empty threats, and will they really cancel all active listings of sellers not on Managed Payments?

Is the $20 offer really to entice people to switch coz they know they can’t go through with the threat?

Is it even legal for them to not allow you to sell unless you switch to Managed Payments?

      • No doubt . I was forced in when I couldn't relist sold listings .

        • When did this happen?

I thought it wasn’t going to start happening until June 18

          • +2

@proudwanderer: Already happened since last month. They force you in after you sold your item by holding your payment hostage till you accept and enter a valid driver licence details!

  • Bookmarked 👍😁
