Would You Return a Purchased Item if It Was Later Reduced by Half Price?

If you bought an item at RRP or slightly close to i's RRP, but then it went on sale dropping down to more than half price, would you make a refund and buy the item?

PS, item hasn't been opened.

that's not being cheap.. that's being smart

but if the item was opened and used that, would be dodgy,,

    • +13

In that case if you want to be honest you could buy the half price one and return it on the original receipt, keeping the used one at home

      • +4

yeah… good idea as long as it's not an item that gets the serial number recorded like a mobile phone or laptop.,

      • +9

if you want to be honest

a bit of a oxymoron statement, when you're saying buying a item so you can return it using a different receipt and pocket the difference.

Guessing my terms of 'honest' is a bit different to yours.

OP made a choice to buy at full RRP, that is the risk you take when you do things like that.

I was in Bunnings on the weekend, and a broom I'd paid $16 for the week before was on clearance for $10.
I even had the original receipt still with me. It seemed so obvious to buy one, and return it with old receipt.
But it felt deceitful, so I didn't do it.

My wife was with me, and she'll drive back to woolies if she was overcharged 1c just on principal, and even she didn't insist on recovering our loss.

So although I kind of agree there is nothing dishonest about it, it didn't quite feel right either.

    • What if it's a frozen item?

      • +18

        then, you let it go…

      • How much do you value your time???

  • +14

Probably, but only if it was worth the effort.

    • +4

^this, depends how much and effort (driving/petrol) to get the difference back.

    • +10

Just wait till we find out its a $2 item in coles that has gone on half price sale this week :)

  • +4

Well I'm clearly not that cheap if I'm buying the item at RRP/close to.

I generally will wait for sales on most items I buy, even if I really want the item. Why pay full price when it will likely go on sale in the next 6-12 months..?

  • +10

Yep, did that was a Ikea kids kitchen set.

Bought it then saw in the lift on way out that a promotion in 2 weeks see its 50% off. I figured will be sold out right away, so kept it in the boot of my car unopened, then 2 weeks later, went in "refunded" it and bought it back on the spot for half price. Store staff said was a good idea and would do the same lol

    • Brilliant! Haha and good story!

SuperCheapAuto offer Price Protection to Club Members.
The price drop is credited to your account for you to use within a set time.

  • Thought this was one of those.. "Tell me you are cheap, without telling me you are cheap"

  • I spend most of my life browsing a bargain website………I'd say pretty cheap.

If the item was $1 , then no

Depends on the actual $ amount

  • Depends on a lot of factors. It's very rare I buy anything at RRP for a start, then it would depend on if it was worth the time and effort and I do value my time rather highly. Then of course it'd be classed as a change of mind return which many businesses don't accept any way so in many cases they'd just say no or you'd end up with store credit which you could use some of to buy the item again for half price but then what do you do with the other half?

  • +1

    No.

  • I swear we had the same thread 10 years ago.

  • +1

I never buy anything at RRP anyway !

I bought a microwave at Myer online, the next day it was reduced a further 15%.

It hadnt even shipped, so I called Myer and asked if they could refund difference, they said to buy another and send one back as they cant modify the price of an order.

So it depends on store policy.

If it has "change of mind refunds", then why not if you think the effort is worth it to you.

  • +1

Yes i would, and i've done it before

I bought some laminate flooring from Bunnings which was on clearance. The next day I went back and the few boxes that were still in the store had been marked down even further so I showed them my receipt from the day before and they refunded me the difference on the packs I had bought. Can't remember exactly how much I got back but it was at least a couple of hundred.

Very lucky! I would have thought the ones left were reduced because there was only a small quantity.

  • ask the store if they'll refund the price difference

side note - amazon does not do this, but they do encourage you to return the item and rebuy it

    • +1

Amazon have refunded the difference to me on all occasions that I've asked for it. On one occasion, I bought an item at $100, then it went down to $92 at which point I asked for the difference back. A week later it dropped from $92 to $75 and again I asked for the difference back.

However, they only provide the difference as a 'gift card'. If you're wanting the money back, then yes, the return and re-buy is the only option as far as I know.

      • interesting… i bought the Lenovo Duet couple of weeks ago, and it dropped in price $60 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/629583) - contacted Amazon while it was in stock, and showed them screenshots, and they said we don't price refund at all BUT they said i could return the item for $6 and re-purchase it

        • Admittedly, on one occasion they said to return the item and re-buy, to which I replied that the cost of their shipping to me and my return to them (free for me as a Prime member) would cost more than the refund being requested. They then refunded the difference as a gift card.

      • They don't do this on imported (Sold by Amazon US / UK items). I bought something that dropped $30 over the course of the week and they told me they couldn't refund the difference. They advised that I send it back, which could take 30 days to process, and then re-purchase.

I paid with gift card balance and asked for the difference to be put back on my balance and they said no.

        • yeah can confirm that i received the credit (just picked something random and can see the Promotion applied.. WAY to go AMazon!

I do this all the time with Amazon - when price drops, I ask for the difference as a 'gift card', which they've done each time.

Noting @supasaiyan response above, Amazon won't refund money but they do the gift card balance refund.

I've done it many times with retailers too. I do ask that they refund the difference, but on occasion (when the retailer gets confused), I say 'can I please return it then and I'll rebuy at the lower price' at which point they refund the difference.

Comes in handy when I know items will be out of stock soon - so I've bought items at RRP (eg. Christmas) and then come boxing day sales, I request the difference back.

managed to get a $27 credit to my account… better than nothing (The promotion is not visible to your account but will apply to your next order for an item sold and ship by Amazon AU item only)

    • I bought some shoes from Amazon using gift card but they sent the wrong size. They said to reorder and post others back. However, as I had already used my gift card, I now had to pay via credit card for the new order. Price had also gone up $10. Amazon said that when they received the first pair they'd refund the gift card amount back plus an extra $10 gc for the increase in price I had to pay for the new pair. I got my original gc refunded but not the $10 promised.

      • Just be aware that there is 'gift card' and there is 'promotional' credit.

Gift card actually shows up as a balance on your account. However, promotional credit only appears when you are at the checkout and it discounts the total price by the amount available to you as promotion. So check to see if your next purchase discounts by your missing $10 amount.

        • also I believe cashrewards and shopback don't apply if you use the credit

Use of Amazon credit as partial or full payment is ineligible for any cashback.

        • Yes, I am fully aware of the promo credit. However, Amazon specifically stated that the $10 I was meant to get for the price difference was going to be GC not promo credit.

The reason being: I had another order Amazon deemed 'lost in transit'. I had received $30 promo credit to re-buy that item & was told that is the maximum amount they could issue via promo credit. Hence why I was to receive the $10 for the issue with the other order as a GC. It didn't really bother me how it was issued.

something like this happened to me over Easter. I bought a laptop from Bing Lee on my credit card for circa $1200 that just went "on sale" from $1600, 2 days later they had another "sale" where it went down to around $900… I called the store & explained the exact circumstance & that I was a little dissappointed expecting them to not do anything or maybe throw me a pity $50 store credit option but to my surprise they instantly offered to refund the difference on my CC.

For this, I will always consider going back in the store to support my local Bing Lee.

  • Bought a shredder from OW 12 months ago. 8 yr warranty and told (at time of sale) it would be replaced with new unit if it broke. Well it broke this week. Part rattling around, shredder not spinning. Returned to OW who were reluctant to replace it but eventually they did. They also gave me a $90 refund (unexpected) as the shredder was now on special. Crazy. I would have been satisfied just to get replacement for broken unit.

  • I bought a GPU on a Friday from PC Case Gear years back then an hour later I received their weekend newsletter with the GPU on sale. As I had paid for the item but it had not yet shipped, I modified my order to the reduced price GPU. One of their staff modified the order back to the original price and I got stiffed.

I say if businesses are happy to do it then so should we.

  • they will not accept it unless it's faulty.

I purchased a jacket. Was told by the manager that the sales will not be on for ages or she would drop the price as she knew me.

Well the sale started the next day.. 30% off RRP.. of course I paid full price. She ran away when I dropped in to see her..

Not bought a thing from her since.

Didn't expect a discount, it's the lie that got me.

    • hahaha I'm so sorry. If you commute around there and a drop in would not be an inconvenience to you, perhaps you could regularly be more persistent to her until she gives up from escaping and demand compensation. I'm intrigued to hear the outcome.

      • I thought I was clear.

        I NO longer shop there.
