  • Smart bulbs like these should be available for $10 ea or less before long

    • They are $10 now. The only reason I see for Lifx is for those into Apple ecosystem, as they connect direct to Homekit.

      But now that Ikea Tradfri officially supports Homekit, you can use their cheap bulbs easily. It just needs their $39 bridge as they are Zigbee, but this means you can use their Zigbee switches. Wifi switches suck (batteries dry). And anecdotally, Ikea are more reliable than Lifx.

      The mini is handy for a lamp that needs a mini. For one of my lamps, I had to saw the top off the diffuser.

          • @bargaino: Technically, you said "connect direct to Homekit". I use Lifx as I only need one bulb. Not connected to Homekit either as I use Android (however I did have to use my iPad mini to set up my first now-dead one)

            • @kerfuffle: OK, I naturally assumed you meant Homekit.

              Since you use Android, you have numerous choices of cloud-based wifi bulbs out there. Why pay through the nose for LIFX?

              • @bargaino: Got any suggestions? Happy to listen. Especially if my current one dies in a few years again.

                As for why I got LIFX, I got the first one through my old work. The second I got from JB Hi-Fi. LIFX customer support ain't too bad

                @bargaino: Caveat: I don't use any Lifx bulbs. But the reviews consistently put the Lifx bulbs at the front of the pack for brightness and colour accuracy, plus the app is pretty good. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of comments out there that the reliability, lifespan and support are not class leading. You pays your money and takes your chances with these things.

                • @Astronaut Joe: Ah, yes! The colour LifX are great, at a price. Sorry, I was thinking of regular lighting, where there are more options.

                  The complaints I heard about reliability are probably wifi-related and solved b y having the right router. I'm a bit biased against wifi for IOT.

  • I would like to sync my smart bulb to music.
    I just read that it is possible with lifx colour, but there is a lag if you do it through lifx app.
    Has anyone found a no/low lag method?

      I think the lag time depends on your wifi and phone quality. The music sync feature runs directly between your phone and the bulb, not through their cloud.
      There is a slight lag, but I don't think it's too annoying. Certainly not professional-grade A/V sync though.

    As much as I like my LIFX bulbs, I'm almost at the point of ripping them out and throwing at the wall.

    2 x Originals, 2 x Color 1000's and a LIFX + connected to a Unifi AC-PRO.

    The Originals are rock solid, the Color 1000s as so temperamental keeping a connection. Might be fine for days, then another day they'll disconnect multiple times a day and need to reset at the switch. I just updated the LIFX+ firmware the other day and now that's started doing the same thing.

    Possibly something between the access point and the lights, but considering everything else on my wireless network runs flawlessly (including all my Tuya lights) I can only assume it's in the firmware of the LIFX (especially now that the LIFX+ has started doing it after a firmware update)

    (After a bit of googling, it is suggested that WMM may be a contributing factor. Have to look in to it.)
