    FYI - FHD.

  • By far the worst 240Hz monitor you can buy, nothing like the Samsung Odyssey G7 or G9.

Appreciate OP covering a deal, but people should look elsewhere, even at this price.

  • This or Xiaomi 34" curved monitor?

    • +1

Neither. Wait for VA updates if you want to buy a VA panel.

      • I'm lost. What does that mean? What VA updates are coming?

        • Presumably faster VA, which uses a little more power, but offers way better response times save for a very minimal amount of dark smearing. We're looking at QHD 240Hz getting down to $700 and below, and there's a bunch of updated panel models coming through for QHD 144Hz-165Hz as well. 4K 144Hz is also in the mix, but that would be back up around the $700+ range again, most likely.

At little more than this price point I'd expect a much improved experience. For FHD 240Hz, currently it'll be best to stick with IPS unless you can find a non-Innolux TN panel (typically AU Optronics).

Here's some info on AU Optronics upcoming roadmap, and expect updates from Samsung too: https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/blog/au-optronics-latest-panel-…

And that's without even touching on upcoming OLED offerings…

          • @jasswolf: Thanks that's very helpful. Not interested in this FHD monitor actually but was going to buy the Xiaomi 34". Bought the techfast AMD 3080 deal recently so for the first time would be able to dirve a 1440p ultrawide. Not sure I would be able to drive a 34" QHD at 240Hz anyway? The Xiaomi is 144 Hz I think.

            • @Xastros: The Samsung panel in the Xiaomi is horribly slow, with substantialy dark smearing: https://youtu.be/xNIzqm5t6o0?t=432

The G5 in that review is a good analogue for what you can expect from the Xiaomi. Ultrawide VA is just horrible right now, and the panel tech needs substantial change.

              • @jasswolf: I may not be as particular as some, especially on VA panels, but I do love my Xiaomi 34 ultrawide. For productivity while WFH, its great and I have no complaints. It may not be the best monitor for gaming, but I have been happy with most games I've played on it. Wouldn't compare it to gaming on my LG OLED tv, but it is still a very good experience. Just my 2 cents

              • @jasswolf: Thanks, I'm aware of the smearing but am willing to deal with it to get the larger size rather than buy a smaller IPS for similar cost.

                • @Xastros: I mean the Dell absolutely destroys them for productivity and gaming. If you have to get an ultrawide take a look at the Gigabyte G34WQC if it's near to $500, which does a better job with the panel.

                  • @jasswolf: I did have a look at that monitor as well. At the end of the day, marginally better response times but worse colour than the Xiaomi while costing 20% more. Didn't think it was worth it.

*EDIT: however based on your comment, might be worth waiting for the new faster VA panels to come out. Would be more expensive but if nothing else should drive the older monitors down in price a little more.

                    • @Xastros: 10ms vs almost 13, with a lot of the dark smearing cleaned up. If you looked at the 45s of measurements in the video I linked (with timestamp), you'd see that.

That's worth the $80 because while it won't give you eye strain, the difference is a decent chance to give you headaches.

But I mean, go with the herd if you like, enjoy your 144Hz monitor that's tuned more like a 90Hz monitor?

                      • @jasswolf: I did actually watch the video you. It says 10.1ms vs 11.9ms?

I also based my opinion on another review by the same guy https://youtu.be/C5FunMmbztw.

Also buying favouring the Xiaomi has nothing to do with following the herd and everything to do with me being a tight arse.

I also am not one to get headaches. I'm coming from an even worse monitor that I've been using for over 7 years. Anything would be an upgrade at this point.

                        • @Xastros: My bad, was comparing an aggregate measurement of all response times, not the ones for max refresh rate, which is 9.7ms vs 13.6ms.

You'd be surprised how much stress PWM, other forms of flicker and oversaturation cause.

                          Meanwhile: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/638222

          • @jasswolf: what OLED monitors are coming up?

            • @jaxon: AU Optronics, LG Display and BOE definitely have stuff in the pipeline, but as to what products those wind up in, nothing's been announced. You're looking at panels in the 20" to 34" ranges from all three (including an ultrawide), as well as a larger 42" TV panel from LG.

Prices should be competitive against LCD offerings, just a question of how quickly things scale up from 120Hz/144Hz to 240Hz.

Is a curve on 27" panel even beneficial?

    • +1

It's minimal, and more about the viewing angle of the panel and masking that.
