      • M1 Air will get hotter since it doesnt have a fan but even then the difference under load with Pro is quite marginal.
The M1 chip by itself is quite thermal efficient. Lots of reviews have also said that M1 Pro fans dont even spin most of the time.

        • +3

The fan definitely comes on and is quite loud if the system is under sustained load like exporting 100+ lightroom photos over a few minutes. The air would definitely throttle in this case. Still i guess it depends on how often you max out the system under a sustained load

    • +5

MBP has brighter screen, better speakers, longer battery life, touchbar, and CPU fan for better sustained performance. Whether that matters to you depends on your use case

      • +3

Gotta add that the "better" here is only "slightly better"

        • +3

Yeah minor difference but may matter to some. I hate dim screens and throttling so went for a refurb 16GB RAM MBP

Actually, Macbook Pro M1 is a stellar buy if you're using it for multiple RAM eating programs at once, for up to 8 hours a day, on a daily basis.

  • How come there are no 16GB RAM options, even though Apple website claims "up to 16GB RAM"?

    • +1

      16gb needs to built separately.

      • So, like a special single-unit request from Apple? Because I can't even find 16GB models on Apple's website.

          • @sauce2k: OK stupid me, I didn't realize I can expand it after selecting the Macbook, thought they would have 16GB as standard on the 512GB model.
            Thanks.

@Blue Cat: And you thought Apple should include 16GB RAM/512GB SSD model as standard in the line up. But no, all these years that configuration is only for Build To Order and doesn't get discounted. So sick of it so I am still hanging on my 2013 13" MBP. Will have to wait for the next M1X MBP to be released, hopefully that 16/512 configuration will be included in the standard line up and get discounted.

              • @edfoo: I am not an Apple computer user myself, but for some reason I was sure Apple would be putting out 16GB RAM laptops as a minimum by now.
I like the amazing battery life of the M1 processor, so might just buy it for light everyday tasks if a good deals comes up… but it's gotta be 16GB RAM, c'mon Apple, it's 2021!

@Blue Cat: they gotta milk the people who want to upgrade. i mean 16GB ram dont cost $300.

  • Waiting for m1x. 13 inch is just too small of a screen

    • Unless you are planning to get the 16" model, the rumoured 14" screen is not that much bigger either.

      • An inch may not sound like a lot, but I reckon it’ll make a difference. Very keen for the 14 inch MBP! Waiting patiently

        • +6

An inch may not sound like a lot, but I reckon it’ll make a difference.

          thats what she said.

        • Its 13.3 vs 14" which means the 14" screen is only going to be about 17mm larger diagonally, quite a minor difference. Saying that the 14 will surely have smaller bezels and look more modern (not to mention more ports, performance etc)

        • Of course there is a difference in size, like 0.7" diagonally, but it is not much when most of us are used to looking at 24" to 32" monitor.

      • Yes I’m planning to buy the 16. My friend has an intel one and it’s awesome, the difference from a 15.6 is both subtle and huge at the same time. I wander when I will be able to get it though.. seems so far away

    • heard they will replace 13" with 14"

  • Is it easy to put a larger SSD into an Air, because I'd rather not be ripped $350 to upgrade from 256 to 512Gb.
I'm pretty sure doing so doesn't affect warranty either.
If so, how do I copy the OS from one drive to the other?

    Thanks in advance!

No part is upgradable, everything is soldered onto the logic board. It has been this way since 2016

      • planned obselence hard at work. where nothing is serviceable because big f u to the consumer we own you.

yes you own the hardware but you cant do sh*t to it if you want to repair it.

    • And because of the above, it absolutely voids your warranty.

  • This or secondhand MBP 15” i7 16GB?

    • +2

      M1 Air

      • How much % faster?

  • Anyone know if JB will price match Amazon or Good Guys?

    • I called JB and they said that they could match Good Guys price.

  • +3

    Is OW price matching?

  • Purchased and returned 2 M1 Macbooks. Both kept crashing whenever I used them with any external monitors.
Not sure if it's good to be buying an Intel now but hoping the M1X / M2 isn't far off!
