Site Security Issues reported

Several Ozbargain users have noted that fraudulent charges or unauthorised purchases have been made with credit cards that were used to make purchases on ESR Gear. It is possible that the website's security may have been compromised and customer's credit card information have been intercepted by a malicious actor.

General announcement from ESR Gear store representative as follows

Dear OzBargainers,

Recently some OzBargainers who purchased the AEVO Hair Clipper reported stolen credit card information. Upon hearing this, our security team was assigned investigate the incident.

On August 28th, we posted a deal on OzBargain for the hair clippers and found that some users in the comments reported that Kaspersky had detected malware on our site. We isolated the infection and the malware was fully removed first thing in the morning of August 29th.

Our website and servers do not collect, transmit, or process cardholder data of any kind. All payments to esrgear.com are processed using a payment processing service on their own servers. We have reported the issue to Stripe, our payment processing service, and they are assisting in the investigation. At the same time, we have hired an incident response team to conduct a thorough investigation of our network and security practices. We are still unsure of how the malware was able to get between this data and the payment processing platform Stripe, but through our ongoing investigation we will find out.

If you are concerned about the potential leak of your payment information, we recommend contacting your bank and reviewing your recent transactions.

We are very sorry for this incident and highly appreciate the user feedback, which led to the quick detection and removal of the security threat. We will continue to improve our website security and will report further findings of our investigation as soon as they become available.

    Hi all, 4 days after purchasing this my credi card details were compromised, and I haven’t use my card in a while. I just finished the call with the bank the blocked the card will dispute the charges of the transactions that went through and will have to wait until my new card has been issued.

    Never used a brand new card for anything else except this website. Last night there were 2 fraudulent transactions on the card. Everyone who entered card details beware, yours have probably been compromised too

    I also bought this (then got an out of stock email but no refund yet) and last night my credit card was hacked, many transactions. Agree with quackster watch out anyone who used this deal!

      I received the same email.

      If I enter the tracking number into auspost site it says:

      "This item was posted in a regular post box and is now travelling through our regular (not express) post network.

      Next day delivery is only guaranteed if an item is posted correctly, so the expected delivery date has changed."

      Sounds like it's nothing to worry about. ETA is 10-14 September for me in SA.

    Fraud/hack alert - friendly reminder if you paid by credit card that your card details are very likely stolen and accruing fraudulent transactions - at least 3 people here have had it happen to them

    Yep got an alert last night that my card had been blocked. Found 3 Uber eats orders that weren’t mine. Not happy!

    My credit card and a mates who purchased were leaked and guessing it was from here as they both happened a few days after purchase. I’ve also not recieved a tracking number for shipping.
    After a refund now but as test no communication

    I don't ordinarily pay via PayPal (but did this time), normally just go with credit card if it autofills. Sounds like a good lesson to stick with PayPal whenever it's offered

    Yeah, I always use PayPal if it's available. It's easier for me since I don't store my credit card numbers on my phone, and double chance of getting money back if something goes wrong (PayPal and credit card on PayPal account).

    • Assume this service checks the ssl certs and other front end features, but the backend it self could be compromised.. It could be the seller saves CC data including the sensitive fields and not have them encrypted or poor encryption practises or an XHR/XSS Vulnerability in the web site or can be any other vulnerability

      • It also looks at other reports too from a whole host of companies/sites. You would think something should come up red/orange out of the dozens if they were dodgy but who knows.

    I've received the clipper today (payed via paypal), however the instructions clearly say to clean with a dry cloth and do not rinse or place in humid environments! I only got this because the ESR store rep listed it as being waterproof… very disappointed!

      I also bought due to being advertised as waterproof in the title in this deal post and the photo also indicates it is with the water illustrations surrounding the product.

        Thanks for sharing your experience. For a longer shaving life, we do not suggest our customers use the trimmer in the shower or store in any other wet place.
        But the blade is detachable and made of titanium and ceramic, it’s fully washable and water-resistant.

    This has been sitting in "its being prepared" in my Australia Post listing for the last 8 days and hasn't moved. Thankfully I paid with paypal. Its taking a hell of a long time. If the item is not as described, I'll think twice about buying from this mob again. OB should think twice about listing their stuff too.

    • Covid Delays + It will say 'preparing' as soon as they receive the manifest. Completely expected. Check 'Aftership' for actual movements. As for 'not as described'… go for it if you think it's worth the time/effort for $15. Remember Paypal can make you ship it back for a refund. Even with paypal free returns I personally can't be bothered.

    My credit card details were also used for a fraudulent transaction after purchasing from ESR.

    ING detected an anomaly and blocked my card. They attempted a transaction with "Suco Inc 330-7221145 US" for $0.00. I guess that's a standard practice to see if someone has fraud protection or not.

    Gotta say I'm pretty pissed at having to order a new card and re-do all my subscriptions etc.

      I had the exact same thing with mine before 3 uber eats orders were made totalling over $150…. Called ING to cancel the card. Now out of pocket until they can refund me and have to wait for the new card.

      All of this and I still havent received the product! Still saying "Its being prepared" Pretty piss poor by ESR.

      Even I bought something from Melbourne via ebay, it has been the same status 'SYDNEY - item processed at facility' for over a week now, auspost must be so smashed and couldn't catch up. You guys should more worry about your credit card than a $15 item arrival date.

    Mine arrived today. I'm glad I paid with paypal based on stories above! For $15 it's definitely worth it! Quality is pretty good, can't fault it in anyway yet.

    Just curious why people care so much about the whole thing being waterproof? I never submerge any of my clippers in water. Just clean off the blades and other areas with an old toothbrush and occasionally (rarely) only wash the blades. Do people use this while they're in the shower? I wouldn't trust an expensive brand let alone a $15 to be waterproof in the long run.

  • Can anyone nice enough to post a photo of the blade head? Mine came off in pieces when I tried to remove it as per instruction manual. Can't seem to put it back together :(

        Are we supposed to keep the white part on there or take it off?
        Mine also came apart when I took the blade off so thanks to this picture I was able to fix it 😅

        • I think that white part is what adjusts the cutting length (the three options to choose on the trimmer itself)

      As in the guard combs that come with the shaver (not in-built)? Yeah I trimmed my beard without any to stubble length and came out fine.

          I used it with the black shaver combs first. Then went over just with the blade directly. This was to fix my wonky haircut

  • Just received mine today. Questions about the white plastic blade. So it's made from plastic? I thought the white part suppose to be metal too. All my other shavers are metal on both parts. Does anyone know if they are design like that or if it makes any different to cutting hair?

    Hi rep, I'm pretty unhappy with my product
    I opened it up on the weekend and my wife was cutting my hair.

    We changed the Clipper and the whole head fell apart and is unable to be put back together

    I've looked at some YouTube videos on how to put it back together but the plastic that is supposed to keep the spring down is broken

    Bought mine on 28th Aug, and it went fairly quickly to Huntington Vic.
    Just sitting there for last 12 days. Maybe Au post employees too busy checking jewellery and watch catalogues?

    But what's with "Delayed - Posted Incorrectly"? According to the AusPost tracking, they have my correct address.
    So what on earth does this mean?

    Just recieved mine half an hour ago. 3/4 charged so fully charged it and went to work. So far very impressed. Used on the shortest with no comb and powered through. Very happy so far.

    Bought the item and appears of good quality, but my card was scammed. A $US1100.00 purchase from an Apple Store was charged. Fortunately my card supplier spotted it and cancelled my card, necessitating a week long wait for a new one. Beware!
