Electric Mountain Bike $1799 + Delivery @ ALDI (Online Only)

770

Another Black Wednesday deal from ALDI. Catalogue photo

  • 250W 36V motor (looks like a mid drive motor, nicer for control in MTB setting! Also integrated into the frame)
  • hydraulic disc brakes (basically a necessity for this kind of bike, so that's good)
  • dropper seat post
  • 27.5" Schwalbe tyres
  • Shimano gears
  • Suntour XCM32 fork

Battery integrated into the down tube which is nice, and I can see it locks with a key.

Single speed 1x drivetrain - seems like the rear cassette doesn't have heaps of range but the motor should power you through all of your climbs.

Seems like pretty solid value.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2021

  • What size person would suit this size. I assume it comes in only one size?

    • its an M according to the assembly video on the estate website

      • Yeh saw that. Would be nice to know what height person it would suit.
I know a medium cube is too small for me, but a medium on my old Merida is perfect.

        • +1

he does say 5'7 to 6 ft but yah not sure

        • Hey. This bike has a 430mm reach, which is a very contemporary (modern geometry) Medium size frame. We recommend 5'7" to 5'11" as the ideal fit.

          • @EstateBikes: Hi Estate, when could we expect bikes to leave the warehouse? Still haven't received any email of product being shipped

            • @28kb: "@EstateBikes" Hi EstateBikes folks, ALDI have indicated that online orders have completed. Can you advise when the shipping starts from your end?

  • Wont Deliver to Singleton NSW, So No Deal

  • I'm a newbie with ebikes. Is this ebike legal in NSW and suited for Home to City commutes?

    and its gone

  • Did anyone manage to place an order?

    • i did.. hopefully the bike is okay as per estates responses.. as I have gone against the advice of the OZB community.. hopefully bike doesnt fail while going down a track and i kill myself slamming into a tree

      • If you do, come back here and tell us about it for next time

        • +1

sure ill come to you via ghost form

      • Hope you enjoy - having just built a tongsheng conversion into a mountain bike - i have no doubt this is a better option , but the tongshen drive is wonderful aslong as you enjoy the torque drive - ie you have to pedel and it assists, no throttle option which I think is the best way to make you exercise, but also help you up stupid hills that would cause you to not go on the bike. Have fun - i think this is a great value option as long as estate know what thier doing

      • I've placed an order too. Estate have been very responsive on this thread which got me across the line.

        • are you new to MTB as well?

          • @28kb: I wouldn't say that as the family all ride hardtail MTB however we're more into gravel paths than downhill MTB.

            • @rockycape: where do you find gravel paths, local parks?

              • @28kb: So right now 77+ (pluses) on this ozbargain deal.

Only two ozbargainers have indicated they successfully placed an order. It's worth asking again - did any other ozbargainers manage to place an order?

                • +1

@rockycape: Anyone who has been here for a while understands there's zero correlation between the number of upvotes and the number of (attempted) orders.

    • Yes I added 1 to my cart at 8:29:45, then noticed at 8:34 they were sold out!

Have received and built it yesterday. Best value mid-drive ebike on the market! Rides extremely well on flats and up hills.

  • Overall I like the specs as a hybrid commute bike that I might go on light trails from time to time which suits me. My concern like many is what happens with the battery replacement down the road. Getting one that slots into the frame will be an issue and I can see I'll end up with some after market frame bolt on again. A bigger battery around 450-500 Wh would have been great for the original fitment but let's see. Now how to override the pedelec lol

    • If it is a tongsheng - it probably isnt a TSDZ2, one of the maybe similar build in types, but doubt there is a open software like the TSDZ2 (yet), also the TSDZ2 is a torque sensor drive and even the open source firmware doesnt override the torque sensor drive, just boosts it, possibly if to hard to overheating. If you want throttle control then this isnt for you

  • No shipping outside CBDs it seems. wouldn't ship to sunshine Coast QLD either

  • Anyone got theirs yet? How about a review?

    • Nah they have delayed deliver by a couple of weeks

  • I received mine yesterday. Assembly was easy and looks OK quality but I'm no expert and this is my first e-bike. I only had to slide the gear shifter to the left for 2-3 cm as it was digging into my right hand.
Not sure if it's only mine but it needs some adjustment to its gears. I don't know how to fix it so I need to watch some youtube videos. Shifting up doesn't always change gears and the chain makes some noise.
I went for a ride today I think odometer showed 12 km when I returned home and the battery indicator dropped from 4 bars to 2 bars.
I was pleasantly surprised to see hydrolic seat adjustment but seat is not that comfortable. Motor is noisy but I have no idea if it's better or worse than others brands.
It's got some sort of a torque sensor. When you paddel harder it pushes you forward harder but you only really feel this when you first start paddling from stand still, especially uphill. When riding on a flat road you don't get a similar push by paddling harder.
Lastly, it's annoying that it doesn't have a throttle, it would have been more fun.

    • where abouts do you stay? how is the front suspension

    • The video on the bike website discusses adjustments to make for the chain. If its ends up crappy, then it's back to ALDI- a good policy of the store.

  • Back in stock. Limited stock though.

I got mine last week, and I see that they are back in stock, so I figured I'd contribute some thoughts for anyone considering it.

Overall I'm pretty impressed - bang for buck is unrivalled at the moment.
I took it past my local bike shop to get some accessories and they were all gobsmacked at the price - with the specs, they assumed it was a $3-5K bike.

To answer some burning question on this thread, the motor appears to be a TONGSHENG MIDDLE MOTOR TSDZ3 with a VLCD6 Display/controller, which is actually pretty good and reliable from what I can tell looking at online reviews. Reviews I've seen have suggested it's more reliable than the Bafeng equivalents, but less known. Assembly was pretty easy. Gears were well tuned out of the box. Suntour XCM32 front forks are good for a bike at this pricepoint and the dropper seat post works nicely. Torque sensing is really nice and works well. Very responsive. Schwalbe Tough Tom 27.5x2.35 tubeless tyres seem pretty good. They're very fat! The balance of the bike is good having the battery where it is gives a good centre of gravity and stability. But the bike is HEAVY. Not too much of a biggie given how responsive the pedal assist is. It doesn't have ebrakes, so you can have the brakes and the motor fighting each other if you're doing finer movements…

Controller is actually configurable between 25Km/h and 45Km/h (fiddling with the controller buttons, although only 25 legal in AU). I noticed the wheel circumference was not set up properly for the speed sensor, so it was reporting slower speeds than what I was actually riding at based on my GPS watch, however that is also fixable with holding down the right buttons on the controller to edit the settings. I have tweaked, but not tested yet. Bit annoying they hadn't set it properly.

One of my biggest concerns when purchasing this was that the parts support and namely battery support into the future. Only 1year warranty is not great, but what if the battery fizzles out after 2-3 years, which is more likely… Well one nice surprise for me was that I noticed the battery appears to be exactly the same as that used in other emountain bikes (eg: Pedal Coyote emountain bike), which gives me a bit more confidence that I'll be able to get a replacement battery if needed.

Overall I'm very impressed with the bike in terms of specs, performance (only tested on road) and aesthetic, but I do have some issues that are worth mentioning:
Brakes appear to be no-name brands and I had some hydraulic fluid leaking out near the levers after a day of light riding, which will definitely need to be fixed. In fairness this could happen to any new bike that may need some tweaking, but does need to be resolved ASAP. I can probably fix myself, but don't really want to touch anything as it should still be covered under warranty, given that it's brand new. Apparently they have several service centres scattered about, I have contacted the tech support which is through Tempo. So far the after sales / tech support experience has been bad (putting it mildly). At the moment, I have little faith that the issues will be resolved - I spoke to a person on the phone that barely even knew they sold ebikes. I got absolutely no information and am currently waiting for them to get back to me via email / callback.

Secondly, a somewhat annoying thing to see was that there appeared to be some scuff marks / imperfections in the black coating on the frame and the wheel rim that had been filled in with black permanent marker (or something similar) from the factory to hide the blemishes. Wasn't too major, but definitely not a good look coming new from the box with coverups.

These annoyances are irritating, but not deal breakers for me.
In terms of bang for buck, it's pretty darn good. Time will tell what corners have been cut in terms of rust and components, but for now everything certainly looks the part.

    • Nice post. Would you repost over at whirlpool perhaps? —> https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/974py070

      • +1

Didn't come across that whirlpool thread, but took a look now and it says the thread has been removed by the moderators? I'd be interested to see other people's experiences and would be happy to cross post mine elsewhere, as ozbargain does not seem like the right place for this (but it's the only place i found with active discussion on the topic)

    • I am guessing you are not in VIC, disspointing to hear regarding the permanent marker..

      • I'm in Sydney. Delivery was quicker than expected for me. The permanent marker wasn't major but was disappointing.

    • +1

It doesn't have ebrakes, so you can have the brakes and the motor fighting each other if you're doing finer movements…

Be careful with this - the tsdz2 which is probably similar has a nylon output gear - said to be to protect the more expensive metal gears ( replaceable at low cost) and driving the motor under brake will strip this nylon gear in short order. Please check the controller cable if dis connectable, and see if the cable has 6 or 8 wires - 8 wires mean a ebrake is a option with the vlcd5 controller or (on the tsdz2 with open source firmware the bafang controller can be added). But that said probably only a issue if your not carefull, dont brake and pedal :)

      • Controller cable inline connector has 6 pins. Not sure about the pinout from the motor though. From what I understand, VLCD6 doesn't support ebrakes. So if the motor supports it, one would need to swap that out. All cables are internally routed (quite nicely I might add), but not clear to me how easily things can be changed.

I'd also potentially like to look into fitting 6v lights. I believe the speed sensor can be replaced with a splitter cable to break out 6v 0.5a light connections, and they can be controlled by the LCD display holding the down button (currently that just controls the backlight on the display, but should in theory turn on lights if connected…?). Anyone have experience with swapping the speed sensor cable assembly to fit lights on these Tongsheng motors?

        • +1

You can order the light kit that includes the dual speed sensor from Cap Rouge - but be warned the lights are fairly cr*p so I now have 2 dual speed sensor cables. My motor kit came with the light harness as well as the dual sensor , but no lights - so I ordered the light kit and got duplicate of both items. looking for a decent 6v front light - that is better than this one, but small current to suit - .

          • @ziggy1312: Thanks for the info. I'd probably purchase the cable and sensor, which is cheap and then look for separate 6v lights as the ones they offer in the kits I could find don't appear to be good value.

            • @alfro: Probably better to just separate l-ion lights and forget about the integration - it sounds cool but there just isnt enough juice on that pathetic wire to really do much, now if a box with a relay/mosfet and trigger full battery voltage on a decent gauge wire then your talking.

              • @ziggy1312: I hear ya. I'm not necessarily after super bright lights, so I think the low power lights may be fine. For me the priority would be a neat and tidy integration with minimal fuss (i.e. not having to charge lights separately). However, I will most likely end up fitting detachable lion lights, as you say, as there are still too many uknowns at this point with the motor and its compatibility. Can't find any good resources online about it / specs / pinouts… Looks like there may have been a court-case between bafang and tongsheng that is affecting its web presence…? Anyone know more about that or where to find specs?

    • One other very minor observation that I though I'd add: in one of the pics on the estate bikes site, they show two boltholes for a kickstand on the chainstay. The bike I received doesn't have that little flange with the holes. I had planned to fit a kickstand I already had from a different bike, but now I need to find a different one that works with the frame.

    • Correction: I incorrectly wrote "tubeless" tyres in my post above. They have Schrader valves, so they unlikely to be tubeless… Another few days in and still enjoying the bike. Brake issue is still irritating and still nothing from @Estate Bikes / Tempo re support after a few followups. I hope they come to the table and resolve this. I really want to give the bike 5 stars, but can't with these annoyances…

      • dang.. would you know if the rims are tubeless ready?

    • Got mine finally and assembled over the weekend. Took it out today on local roads and paths (no trails yet) and I was impressed with it, riding a regular route I usually do on my old non e-bike and didn't come home drowned in sweat or exhausted! That's a bonus for me at 58.
Could do with one more gear though I think for extra top speed but still more than enough.

The only thing I couldn't fit was the red rear reflector on the tube as indicated. Not a deal breaker as it looks like it might be for a small diameter tube or the plastic moulding is a mm or 2 too thick. The only other observation was that the tyres show the direction of travel in reverse to the way the tyres are fitted and yes I did see that odd black on the frame too- Not sure what that is about.

Can I ask what you set the wheel circumference to? It is preset at 200 I think. I wasn't sure if it was the overall circumference with the tyre or just what the wheel would be. @EstateBikes can you confirm what it should be please ?

Has anyone in Melbourne received their bike yet?

    • Just got a message.. mine is coming tomorrow (i'm in melb cbd)

      • Cheers. Same here. SE Melb.

    • Also got a message, NW Melb.
Seems like there are few Melb deliveries happening tomorrow.
      Happy Days.

    • Was notified of delivery on the 7th but the one day I'm not home- tried to contact delivery bunch but no luck so they attempted delivery. I still haven't been able to speak with anyone and another delivery is coming tonight (why so late) when I'm working afternoon shift- thinking I will never see this thing.

Took the bike to Listerfield mountain bike on the weekend.

Initial power is quite good however my bike has a major issue where the chain seizes randomly and the motor gears crunch i believe. It tenders to happen at higher power.. I think it's when the chain becomes slack. Also, the Chain can get caught on the chainstays which causes the motor to crunch and seize. Can't be good for the nylon gears

My friend mentioned the above could happen because this derailleur does not have a clutch to keep tension on the cable. @EstateBikes any thoughts? It does seem the deraleur is inadequate for an ebike.

Although this happened maybe 10+ times.. manage to get a decent ride out at lysterfield park.

Shocks are obviously not great and result in a lot of pressure up the arms when faced with any large rocks, roots, and I really need to get bike-padded shorts, but the bike does power up the hills and non-e-bike riders were fairly jealous.

The bike is heavy though and not very nimble or also likely due to my inexperience.
