4400

20% off on The Good Guys gift cards when purchased at Australia Post from 30 April to 13 May.

PS: Although the deal technically starts on the 30th, some Australia Post outlets seem to be honouring the deal now.

PPS: Looks like the link has been photoshopped out of the Australia Post official catalogue. And the link has been removed from Lasoo. I've updated the link to the catalogue. It is on the bottom of page 5 of the catalogue.

I paid a deposit (20%) on a fridge and washing machine last week, so does this mean i could pay the rest in vouchers ?? Great deal if thats the case !

    • If its like JB then yes you can!

    • +2

does this mean i could pay the rest in vouchers ?

It's the same as cash, yes you can. Bit of a bummer about that 20 per cent you already paid though isn't it? lol

      • I see what you did there hahahha

  • +6

No business can make money doing this… which makes me worry..

    • +1

There was talk of selling late last year:

      http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/mergers-acquisition…

Would make sense for Wesfarmers, as Woolworths have whitegoods in Masters now.

      • +2

The Muir's have been trying to offload it for a long time and last time I was in a store the staff member was speaking of tough trading conditions.

Although I could just be paranoid.

    • Anyone who's ever haggled over price at Good Guys (or any other electrical retailer) knows that they can discount most big ticket items by 25-30% (sometimes more). Their margins are ridiculous.

Also, many gift cards, once paid for, go unused. Tyro quotes abandonment rates on 15-30% of its customers' gift cards. http://www.tyro.com/pages/show/56

      I think they'll do fine.

      • 30%! If they average $50 each card…
        Sweet jebus.

    • So for those who have serious concerns about the viability of the company, either use credit cards to pay as earlier suggested, or only buy these for a purchase you're planning to make immediately. End of problem.

  • +3

Possible to buy a discount Aus Post giftcard and use that for buy the Good Guys gift card?

      • +1

I don't think the dude was being serious. Take it a bit light-heartedly maybe.

    • Step 3 = arbitrage

  • +3

    Too good to be true?

I'll wait and see what happens. If I buy gift cards I will make sure to use them quickly (same day).

With retailers doing it tough there is too much risk in it otherwise.

    • Yeah I keep thinking about the Borders/Angus gift card fiasco.

      Who knows…sometimes rewards > risk

  • +7

    Cash flow problem, gentlemen?

Beware of deals like this. Great deal if you can buy and use quickly.

    • +6

precisely, they could go bankrupt and wonder what happens to these then,,,

      • +2

What is the law regarding gift cards from companies that go bust?

        • +6

LAW? Good luck taking a failed business to court. You are an unsecured creditor, so last to be paid out when business fails. Most times, there will be no money left to pay, and liquidator won't accept gift card for purchases during liquidation sales. Look up WOW liquidators message about their gift cards. http://www.1wow.com.au/

Selling a lot of cheap Gift Cards is a quick easy way to raise cash. If a business wanted to raise money from a bank or the stock market, they would have to justify it & show they would be around to pay it back - but not to gift card purchasers! So always be wary as it may be a way of staying afloat a little longer. Pay by Credit Card as they should cover any loss. Use the cards as soon as possible.

But I still have some 50% off Bunnings cards from 7 months ago! And no problems there. (crosses fingers!)

        • +1

          See WOW.
          http://www.thechronicle.com.au/story/2012/02/28/wow-gift-car…

customers who held gift cards issued by the store would need to contact the administrators to lodge a claim.

        • People lost a lot of money on gift cards when all those book stores went bankrupt not too long ago..

      • +2

If a business runs into trouble the receivers sometimes require 'one for one' gift card sales. To use a $20 gift card you have to spend another $20 in real cash. Of course if the business goes completely bust then the gift cards are essentially worthless as you're an unsecured creditor at the end of the bank/employees/etc queue.

20% off gift cards smacks of desperation to me. I'm sorry if the Good Guys disagree or if they were simply looking to give their customers a great offer, but it suggests either the business is desperate to get customers at any price or their profit margins are so high that they can easily absorb a 20% hit.

        • +2

Lets all just calm down here. Whilst its true that in the event of liquidation, a gift card holder would merely be an unsecured creditor and likely to get a minimal dividend on the face value of their card, I dont think thats neccesarily the case here. For starters, if the company goes into liquidation just after this 'sale' the directors would SURELY be personally liable for insolvent trading and ASIC would definately be taking them to court on the matter. No director is stupid enough to make such a transparent money grab whilst the company's solvency is at risk.

        • +3

Well that has been the history of a number of businesses in Oz, not necessarily with gift cards but other ways to raise cash without providing anything in return.

You might think about a recent Australian airline collapse where tickets were being sold long after the company seemed to be insolvent. They could not get credit for fuel. So it seems people buying tickets for future flights were paying to keep current flights going. The law seems not to have stopped those directors.

Knowing that there possibly may be action taken against those at the top (years later) is of little consolation and of no financial benefit.

Retail industry is saying they are being driven out of business, so it is wise to be careful, but not alarmed. After all WOW's very recent collapse, in a similar sector to GG, came as a shock - especially to those who had just bought gift cards!!

Cases against directors are rare, considering the number of creditors that lose money. It is very hard to prove in court intent to deceive gift card buyers. So a case is unlikely to ever occur. Besides, that does not recover your money! Trading while insolvent is a bit easier to show.

A valid question was raised of what happens when a business goes belly up. Its always best to be aware of a risk, given WOW gift card buyers problem.

        • Glad to see so many people working in the same business as I do.

    • +2

No one is implying good guys are trading insolvent. However, you can forecast a cash flow problem and still be solvent. Something like this is straight out of the retailers handbook – chapter 11 (pardon the pun) Managing your cashflow. It buys you time until you get redemptions of the gift cards at little to no margin.

And to your comment about “no director would be so stupid”. Perhaps talk to some creditors of Kleenmaid. If you had paid a deposit you might not call yourself “merely an unsecured creditor”

      • +2

Im not suggesting that unsecured creditors aren't in a tough situation. Im just saying that if a company takes on massive unsecured debts RIGHT BEFORE going into administration, this would be a textbook example of insolvent trading. If WOW or Borders had done this, you'd best believe ASIC would be getting involved.

        • Ah, I am not a believer like you. Unsecured creditors with say $100 or $1000 of Gift cards are very small fish & have little or no power. ASIC would have to see 'public good' in taking action & unamalgamated creditors with small exposure would never be a priority. Just because a business sells a gift card just before going under does not prove intent or anything wrong.

        • Bruce and Ambigous, > Both 100 % spot on !
that is my biggest worry with this deal .

nevertheless if you can redeem it its a great deal…

    • what is?…buying the gift cards?

      • sorry my mistake, the link is set as Sydney .
That 's why it shows only Sydney post office.
        My mistake

Edit: Replied to a wrong post.

  • So this won't work in perth? dammit was just looking for an ipad and the cheapest way to get one! only idea I got was to buy from big W and use the 5% u get off by using the entertainment card and buying vouchers. This trounces that easy!

  • Damn nice.

My 2 local Good Guys are nearly always dead, so wouldn't surprise me if they are struggling.

  • hmmm very tempting….in need of freezer but kambos seem to be cheaper and offer free delivery
cant be bothered lining up at the PO… always a line when i get there

  • Can anyone see the 16gig ipads in stock in Melbourne? Can't seem to search across multiple stores

  • +1

will you guys be queuing up at aust post for this?

  • Can't seem buy it online, there are no Good Guys card listed?

edit - I just noted the start date.

    • So can we actually buy it online? Or will I be fighting off other Ozbargainers next Monday to get my hands on some?

  • +1

Very tempted to pick some of these up although I don't have any appliance's to buy at the moment.

My local good guys (hoppers crossing, Vic) have always been really good with my family so I really hope this isn't a cry for help. It'd be a shame to be forced to go to Harvery Normans.

  • +1

+1 if you will be using your giftcard to buy a new ipad.

    • +7

lik dis if u cry ever tim

      • +5

Uh oh, looks like I'm in that part of youbargain again..

    • I can't see Ipads in stock many places?

  • Anyone read the fine print? This site doesn't open for me: www.blackhawknetwork.com/australiantems

  • Piece of advice use the cards ASAP and it is a great bargain but wait for months too long…. and you might end up with hundreds of dollars of useless plastic gift cards or at greatly reduced value like the Borders gift cards in the dying days, for those us who still remembers!

  • +1

I am going to cry if this turns Dick Smith.
NOW! What format are the cards in? Are there predetermined values printed on them, ($20, $50, $100) Or are they just blank cards which have to be loaded and activated with cash? If so, what is the maximum we can put on them?

    • I am wondering the same thing…
need to buy a new fridge (looking at spending 2k)
it will suck if I need to buy 100x$20 vouchers.

    • My questions exactly. Are the fixed value or loaded during checkout? Is there a limit on the value of the card?

    • Looking online @ GG's they are a min of $20 and max $500, mulitples of $10 to $100 then it jumps $50 at a time.
But it also says you can also load it up with any value in between.
Not sure Aupost will do the same tho.

  • -6

I think two types of giftcards may have to be purchased together.
    So not really good deal.

    • My understanding is that you can use the gift card at either Best Restaurents or the good guys. Otherwise, they would sell these two gift cards seperately.

      • +1

The offer is for either Good Guys gift cards or Best Restaurants gift cards. I think the terms and conditions of the promotion was pretty straight forward.

        • Yes, I just realise that. Both gift cards are 20% off and you can pick either one of them. Very good deal!

  • +2

Aren't the GoodGuys due for a 20-30% off on iTunes vouchers?

  • +3

its all about price matching then getting to the check out and getting 20% off

  • +9

Price matching + Gift card 20%off =best electronics deal for the next 12 months?

    • As long as they don't go JB HIFI on us and spike prices the day before the sales.

  • Can you use multiple gift cards?
I am looking to buy white goods around 5000 dollars ………..
I am scared that they only let me use 1 card…..

    • Gift cards are as good as cash. Without this deal, I could walk in to a GG store and pay $5000 for $5000 worth of gift card. So why wouldn't they let you use $5000 worth of gift cards?

    • $100 give card = $100 note, why not? Have they ever asked you to pay cash $100 and the rest by other method?
