eBay's Authenticity Guarantee Is a Fake

I recently purchased some brand new Air Jordan 1s from eBay Australia using their 'Authenticity Guarantee'. There are a lot of these types of sneakers being sold on the second hand market, which is why I suppose eBay has implemented the program to a select range of products. Unfortunately I was fooled into believing my eBay purchase was safe.

The sneakers I got were completely and totally fake. Since I spent more than $300, of course I wanted to verify myself whether the sneakers were legit. Luckily there are lots of videos and online resources to do this. Out of all the things I checked (colour match, stitching, logo positioning, etc.) they all raised red flags for being fake. I contacted eBay about it and they have sided with the seller since they said their authenticity was verified by a third party.

When I checked their terms and conditions to find out who this third party is, there was no mention of the company. How it works is that the seller ships to the 'authenticator', then the 'authenticator' ships to me. But who knows where or who this is done by. Through my research, I've also read that they rip the tags off shoes they believe to be fake, and apparently this has happened to genuine sellers.

that sux. They showed on the news people sniffing the shoes for authenticity.

    • If they smell good, they must be real.

Was that a Joe Biden quote?

Joes moto would be "if they smell young, it must be good"

  • Of course they are fake, there is no way to authenticate them, do you think they would come with a certificate or something ?

If there is no way to authenticate then ebays guarantee is absolutely unenforceable. It is a guarantee for the gullible.

Sneaker Con are the mob that do the authentication… Although as I understand, they were acquired by eBay sometime in Nov 2021.

You haven't really expanded on 'your own' authenticity checking validation other than a statement "Out of all the things I checked (colour match, stitching, logo positioning, etc.) they all raised red flags for being fake."

How do they raise red flags? Do you have pics and comparisions? No point making this statement and accusations towards eBay crying that "The sneakers I got were completely and totally fake" without any actual proof to show a public forum of your findings.

I've purchased 3x Jordan's through eBay authentication and have been very happy with mine.

Ebay is a dumping ground for Alibaba drop shippers, they will never get rid of fakes.

I don't think they really care. I've bought a fake Android tablet off eBay. I got refunded eventually, but the same seller is still selling the same goods off eBay, despite me notifying them.

eBay also remove negative reviews of items.

Reps are at the point that even stockx gets duped let alone eBay

    authenticator

So the authenticator is as fake as the shoes? They need an authenticator to authenticate the authenticator.

EBay won't care once they've got your money.

The service, which eBay launched in October 2020, offers full vetting and verification of select sneakers bought on the marketplace by a team of Sneaker Con’s industry experts. In just over one year, more than 1.55 million sneakers have been authenticated globally on eBay.

Conceived in 2009, Sneaker Con has cultivated a global community of sneaker enthusiasts through its industry-leading events, where people gather to buy, sell and trade sought-after footwear. Sneaker Con launched its authentication business in 2018 to complement the events business and provide industry-leading authentication services to further support the sneaker community.

A business that VET millions of sneakers every year vs 1 individual with limited industry experience.

    Which one is right?

Are you saying on eBay alone or in general?

      • in general.

    • even harder to tell when retails often have production flaws (that reps actually address!)

I think OP needs to check with another professional in the field as it could be him that is wrong .
If that is the case watch out for Ebay coming after your a$$ with this post .

Pay for it to be authenticated by someone who knows what they are talking about.

  • don't know much about ebay's 'Authenticity Guarantee', but unless the seller sends the item to ebay to have it verified by their "experts" (which I doubt, as it would add a significant cost & delay), then I don't see how ebay can guarantee the authenticity of anything that is being sold on their platform…………

  • eBay isn't the only one, even StockX which supposedly the first authenticator company sent me a complete different model sneakers to what I purchased, with their StockX guarantee tag on the sneakers.

    Absolute bonkers lol

  • It's just a thought, but why haven't shoe manufacturers come up with a better way for customers to be confident in their purchase? For example, embedding RFID or NFC into one of the shoes so that it can be authenticated using their own app. Like they could issue it with a unique algorithmic number that is verifiable through their own database.

  • eBay just does their own thing doesn't matter if it's a buyer or seller.

My selling account got banned from selling multiple times for apparently selling fake items, even though no one has bought it yet and it's a $15 item that no one bothers to make a fake. These decisions are made without any warning, no information will be provided and cannot dispute it at all. Also once you get 1 strike, they will keep targeting you and you cannot appeal at all.

I don't know how sellers who are obviously selling fake items get away with it, while sellers with real products keep getting counterfeit item strikes.

    • Oftentimes these resellers have new accounts (ratings around 10 to 20). I guess it's possible they've been banned previously.

Sell it back on eBay. According to eBay they’re authentic right?
