Energy - Price Changes When Signing up

Hi,

I'm helping a family member change electricity plan and currently looking at Alinta on the website https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

It says the rates are as below:

Then when you sign up to the same plan at the end of the signup it lets you check the rates and they come out completely different.

Can anyone explain why they aren't the same?

At the moment it just seems like they are trying to scam people by putting false rates on the energy made easy.

  • I've just checked Origin - the next cheapest and theirs match what it says on energy made easy - so its just Alinta.

You conveniently cut out enough information in pictures and post that we have no idea what "plan" you're comparing the other "plan" with, or any information you put in that differs to what you put in Alinta. We can't read your mind from our computers.

The displayed tariff on energymadeeasy is probably different to the tariff you can get when signing up. There are a lot of tariff types now, and when using energymadeeasy it's easy to get the wrong one.

Also cashrewards and shopback have cashback for alinta.

I had this same nonsense from Alinta when signing up. It showed single rates until sign up then silently changed them to demand rates. I spoke with someone at Alinta and they tried to explain it on the basis that the wholesaler only supplies demand services (which is nonsense for my residence).

Alas, the demand rates are actually cheaper for my usage so I don’t mind much - but their site is misleading.

    • This is exactly whats happening - so are you saying that even when speaking to them they wont put you on the single rate?

      • Yes - precisely.

Origin it is then - cheers
Pretty sure its illegal to advertise something you can't provide too.

          • @Geoff-bargain: Origin just did this exact thing to me. Signed up to single rate, once the plan was active it was a time of use tarrif.

            • @djsweet: How is this legal!
              Have you disputed it?

              • @Geoff-bargain: No. I don’t really mind. I wanted time-of-use the whole time, but the website would only list flat rate for my address. I think the tariff type is determined by the distributer based on your meter type. I think the retailer websites are just displaying incorrect info. Also the call centre people have no idea about the different tariffs which doesn’t help. They told me there is no such thing as time-of-use, and all their plans are fixed rate

                • @djsweet: I'm with them too and just checked the app to see what mine says and it's blank. Mine should be a set amount for the first 10kwh then sightly higher after that. Will see what happens when I get the bill.

      • I had a same same, but different issue to yours and questioned it with Alinta. They told me the meter type is registered by the electricity distributor.

I would guess that your family member's property is registered as having smart meter by their electricity distributor (Ausgrid) and is not therefore eligible for the single rate.

I’ve got a smart meter on Energex in Qld and have had such meter for a long time. I change retailer about every 12 months. The only retailer to claim I must go on demand has been Alinta. Immediately preceding Alinta I was on Mojo with single rates - no issues.

          • @kipps: Good to know. I’ll be shuffling from Alinta when they raise their prices in August.

      • i had a smart meter installed a while back and agl and origin will only put me on a demand tariff while reamped and nectr offered me single rate plans.

you need to put in your full address when getting a quote to see what they what plan they will put you on

  • The images are for different plans depending on your meter. One is a TOD and the other is a fixed rate 24x7.

Do you have a smart TOD meter or a dumb old style meter? Allot of plans have two options, one for TOD and one for a single rate 24x7.

I had to cancel my sign up twice. Once they added Gas, which I didnt want, the other time they signed me up with a plan that had demand fees on top of electricity…..

  • I had the exact same experience myself when moving from ReAmped to AGL through Finder (to get my Woolies voucher).

Nowhere on Finder did it mention that it was a demand tarrif. Checked the documents from AGL and it's demand tarrif. Cheaper rate than advertised for during the day, but that demand tarrif structure is going to flog people… not because of the rate itself, but because of how demand tarrifs get charged.
