  • will it give indoor temp?

    • will it give a massage?

  • These devices are getting old. Still responds quickly via "Hey Google", but I feel the touch menus are very limiting.

    • Not exactly old as this is the 2021 2nd Gen model. Thankfully, we don't have to have a new model every year if there is nothing wrong with existing. My Gen1 from 2018 still works very well and see no need to upgrade it. Great devices.

    • how many people actually touch the screen menu regularly though?

once the initial excitement is gone,
most people would rarely ever touch the menus or the screen since it is no tablet or phone
as you said, cos is very limiting.

most would just be issuing voice commands onwards…

      • Is that what it is? Deliberately make the touch interface extremely limited so people dont use it?

        • no..
it is just the device was not meant to be used regularly as a touch device..
          even though it supports it.
cos the OS itself is limited to those limited apps and the hardware is not that great compared to even a cheap tablet or phone..
It is running Fuschia OS, not Android.

The devices are design around issuing voice commands as the main way to interact with it..

like most of the time people just use it turn off lights or stuff like that
and even then it is more quicker to issue voice commands from across the room than to go to the device and touch the menu.

most people aren't gonna be holding it like a phone or tablet to surf the web or watch youtube.
it is just too limited, boring and not great UI.
It is also slow due to the weak hardware..

There is rumour that Google is coming out with a removable display that can dock..
but even then if it not running Android OS, then it will not be used much as a touch device..

I've got a ring doorbell 4, anybody has experience using a google nest hub with it? Ideally I would like to communicate with the front door on the nest hub (with ease)

    • try google if it works or not..

my own outdoor camera works on the device..
but is not that great of an experience..
essentially it is just to watch the video stream in not good aspect ratio
      and no user controls.

so just stick to the phone, tablet or pc.

    • From what i've researched, it integrated better with Google doorbell and if you wan to use Ring doorbell then you have to use Amazon's Alexa.

I was given a Google Nest as a gift but already owned a Ring doorbell so now i'm torn between changing my Ring system or Google Nest.

There is a work around but i got lazy half way through:

  • I've got a google nest hub max - and I've found it's increasingly having trouble hearing me, can't pick up on me saying "Hey Google"

      Maybe try F*** Google? "lol"

  • NOTE: not much bigger than a large smartphone

    • A phone is hardly a good comparison. By default they don't listen for "Hey Google" I don't believe so one would have to go to the phone to ask something. ALSO phones speakers would be nowhere near as good. Just noting two big differences.

  • better this or amazon echo show.

      Depends on your use case.

For connecting to smart devices I prefer the Amazon system, it feels quicker to process the request and it is easier to say ‘Alexa’ rather than ‘Hey Google’ or a derivative.

For answers to questions you would normally type into Google, Google is a better platform.

Agree with Master Bates. I've played with both from a "smart device" and a "home automation" platform . A lot of the features that Amazon touts don't work in Australia either so be a bit careful.
Couple of other things to keep in mind:
        1. Do you have Google Music or Prime Music? If you're going to load your music account get Google or Amazon depending on your "provider"
        2. Do you have multiple users, Google will recognise different users and give different calenders/services/ etc when asked
        3. You certainly get more and much more useful trivia from a Google device
        4. Do you want to search, buy and track Amazon products, then Echo is better
        5. Without something like Home Assistant as a standalone automation environment Amazon is much bettter has a wider range of supported devices and better atuomation management.

        • A lot of the features that Amazon touts don't work in Australia

On that note, I have mine set up with a US account so that I can access all services bar purchasing from Amazon AU, which I wouldn't do via Alexa anyway.

    • Honestly comes down to who you would rather have your information. Amazon or Google.

  • have this gifted to me, still lying around with minimal use, anyone care to share how to maximize usage for these? I only have smart phones, android TV that might be able to make use of it?

    • One can "Cast" to them so are a handy small TV. Good in Kitchen for timers, news, general control of smart devices. Nice clock for bedroom and can wake you up with the news or preferred music. Just a couple of ideas.

    • if you haven't found a usage for it then you won't ..

most just use as internet radio, timers, alarm clock
you can also cast youtube music, youtube on it…

If you already got phones, tablets and smart tv, then these are much better for video or music playback
except if want to cast music on google device and use your phone for other purpose etc..

Have it sitting on the kitchen bench. Most use is "Hey G, add oats And milk to the shopping list" as you or the kids empty the container.
Also light control and streaming Spotify.

      1. We use it to play music. Sometimes ambient sounds for the dog when we aren't home.
      2. I use it to turn on radio form my phone when i am away on a long weekend at random times so it sounds like someone is home.
      3. Use it to set a timer when cooking. We started doing this after the egg timer battery died.
      4. Check the weather forecast.
      5. I suppose i could control the smart bulbs and plugs in my house but since i changed my wife password i couldn't be bothered going around the house to reset every plug point.
      6. Apparently if set up correctly, it can find your phone if you left it somewhere in the house.
      7. My friend's kid uses it to annoy her by playing songs she doesn't like in her room/ kitchen.
