Welcome to the ultimate guide of the Google One subscription

Updates:

  • 28/06/2023 - New corrected AUD prices, which reflects the significant drop due to Turkey's current economy situation (this deal is an ALL TIME LOW!) All prices in this guide are current as of 28 June 2023.**
  • 28/06/2023 - Additional methods on sign-ups (for those who could not previously sign up via Google Pay, I've now found the solution by using a Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard).
  • 28/06/2023 - At the end of this post are many of the detailed guides I've created.

Reposting this deal from last year just in case anyone missed it, however this post will be better than the previous one and will include more detailed information to help those trying to jump on board the ship. Oh, and prices are even cheaper.

Modern problems require modern solutions. Like Xbox Game Passes, Spotify Premium, Youtube, Netflix, Discord, Google One, Microsoft 365, relocating (virtually of course) to Turkey is usually the best option, with some methods saving hundreds or thousands of dollars each year added up.

YES - you can share your Google One subscription with your Google Family Group, however, this may affect those who use an Android device (or any device that utilises the Google Play store). If anyone in your Google Family has an Android device, please see NOTES section below the end of the post description BEFORE signing up to this deal

Instructions (No Current Subscription)

Please read the following instructions carefully. I've tested it on iPhone and PC (windows), so here's my experience - and it took literally minutes.

Note: If you plan on sharing your Google One subscription with any family members (or others), you must add your Australian family members / accounts into a Google family group before signing up to Turkey Google One subscription, otherwise you will get the following error: "Looks like you're in a different country from the family manager". To add family members, go to: https://families.google.com/families

Step 1: Add any family members to your Google Family Group if needed: https://families.google.com/families

Step 2: Add a Google payment profile for Turkey if you don't have one yet. If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile.

Step 3: Connect a VPN to the server in Turkey (see Notes section for suggestions)

Step 4: Go to https://one.google.com/about/plans and if it shows currency in TRY (Turkish Lira), continue choosing your membership. Pay using a credit/debit card (preferedly with no international fees)

  • Possible Problem 1: Prices are still showing in AUD or pricing initially shows in Turkish Lira but switches back to AUD after you select your plan
  • Possible Solution 1: You might see that the 3 plan columns show Australian pricing, but after selecting the desired plan and going to next screen, it might change to TRY currency. If this happens, then great - just proceed and pay. If it stays in AUD pricing, double check your VPN service or switch to another one. If this fails, you may have to delete your Australian payment profile (you can always make a new one after, but be aware that deleting your Australian profile may destroy all your Google Play Credits and possibly your previous app purchases as well - See Notes section below). Deleting your Australian payments profile will only affect you if you (the person signing up) is an Android user.

  • Possible Problem 2: Error message when paying "Your transaction can't be completed. To continue this transaction, secure your account. Learn more about securing accounts"

  • Possible Solution 2: Turn off VPN then try to pay again. If this doesn't work, delete your debit/credit card off the payment profile and redo all the steps again - when you go to pay it will ask you to enter a new card - try and use a different one and it should work.

Step 5: Fly back home and turn off your VPN

Step 6: To share with family members, you need to turn on family sharing after signing up to share the storage. To do this, go to https://one.google.com/settings, then click "Manage Family Settings" and toggle it on.

Step 7: YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Instructions (Transferring from a different country)

Please read the following instructions carefully. I've tested it on iPhone and PC (windows), so here's my experience - and it took literally minutes.

Probably not the best to transfer as I’m not sure if signing up while having an active subscription will stack on, and there’s no point paying for a whole year if you still got like 5 months left (for example). If you have a current Australian Google One sub, best to cancel it, let the sub period expire then sign up fresh using Instructions above (rather than the one below)

Step 1: Go to https://play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, locate your Google One subscription, click "Manage", then proceed to "Cancel Subscription". Once cancelled, the current subscription will continue until the end of the billing period. But you now have an option to subscribe back to Google One.

Step 2: Add any family members to your Google Family Group if needed: https://families.google.com/families

Step 3: Add a Google payment profile for Turkey if you don't have one yet.

Step 4: Connect a VPN to the server in Turkey (see Notes section for suggestions)

Step 5: Go to https://one.google.com/about/plans and if it shows currency in TRY (Turkish Lira), continue choosing your membership. Pay using a credit/debit card (preferedly with no international fees)

  • Possible Problem 1: Prices are still showing in AUD (or whatever India if you have Youtube Premium via India or pricing initially shows in Turkish Lira but switches back to AUD after you select your plan

Step 6: Fly back home and turn off your VPN

Step 7: To share with family members, you need to turn on family sharing after signing up to share the storage. To do this, go to https://one.google.com/settings, then click "Manage Family Settings" and toggle it on.

Step 8: YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Notes (Important)

  • If everyone in the Google Family is an iPhone user, just follow the instructions above - there will be no problems, as deleting your Australian payment profile will not affect you at all.

If at least one account in the Google Family uses an Android Device/Google Play Store, please read this:

  • Once you sign up to Google One via Turkey, every Google account in the family will relocate to Turkey, even if the other accounts don’t have a Turkey payment profile. The only fix that I have seen right now is to delete the Turkey payment profile on the account that was used to sign up to Google One - that will revert all accounts to the Australian Play Store. However, be aware that deleting your Australian profile may destroy all your Google Play Credits and possibly your previous app purchases as well. However, we can think of a workaround below to make sure everyone in the family has access to the Australian Play Store after signing up to Google One:

    • If anyone in the family has an Android device using the Google Play Store:

We know that anyone in the family group can sign up to Google One and share it with the rest of the family. Given that it is likely the person signing up has to delete their Australian payment profile, use the account who is not an android (one who uses an iPhone/iOS device) to sign up (that way, deleting the Australian payment profile won't affect anything as iPhone users don't utilise the Google Play Store anyway). Do not use the family manager's account to sign up (if they are an Android user) because deleting the Australian payments profile could mean you may lose complete access to your Google Play Credits and possibly your previous app purchases. Follow the instructions section above, making sure you add a Turkey payment profile and remove your Australian payment profile. After signing up to Google One, share it with your family group as per instructions. At the end, delete your Turkey payment profile (and add a new Australian one in if you wish) and everyone in the family will have access again to the Australian Play Store (including the Family Manager, who was unaffected by this method). By deleting your Turkey payment method, the Google One subscription effectively cancels (you will still get the full year access before it expires) and you’ll just need to sign up again and redo this every year

  • If the above method does not work for some reason and you really need Australian apps, I guess the workaround for this would be to create another Google account purely for downloading apps from the Google Play Store

UPDATE: According to atlas:

To avoid all your devices changing to the Turkish play store, all you need to do is:

  1. Make sure the family manager is an Australian account
  2. Use a different account (ie. Burner account) to join the family and setup Turkish payment profile
  3. Setup Google One, share, and away you go.

Result: Main account gets shared storage and keeps Australian profile.

  • Most VPN services will connect to Turkey, unlike India. Those include NordVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), free Windscribe Chrome extension (recommended), ExpressVPN, etc. If one doesn't work, use another VPN

    • If you're using Windscribe and it shows different currencies: keep turning the windscribe on and off. Each time you don't get TRY, turn it off and on, then refresh the Google One sign up page. You'll eventually land on TRY. Go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you turn it off/on and see if you land on Istanbul

FAQ

Q: Can the family manager see who is using what amount of storage?
A: Yes, you can view the breakdown here: https://one.google.com/storage

Q: Does the Family Manager have to be the one signing up to Google One?
A: No, anyone in the family can sign up to Google One and share it with the rest of the family.

Q: Will I get banned by Google?
A: There’s always a chance, however only a tiny number of people (<5) have actually gotten suspended by Google (see linked previous post in OP). Proceed at your own risk.

Please note the process can be easy for some people, harder for others, or may not work at all.

  • There is no need for aggression in instances where you are unable to subscribe to an international Netflix account. Share your experience so everyone can chip in and help out. There are plenty of examples where hacks shared on this platform do not work for some people, but may work for others:

    • Modem reset for faster internet,
    • Cash back program purchase tracking,
    • Price matching an unobtainable deal or price error,
    • Targeted bargains, and
    • Limited quantity items quickly or instant (bot) sellout.
  • Similarly we know there are cash back users who follow every single step for cash back (turn off ad blocker, have no items in cart, do not click other links, etc.) on their purchases and it does not work, its probably best to move on.There are many users who successfully use this hack and enjoy paying half the price of the Australian membership. Unfortunately there are also many users who have been unable to sign up to Netflix Turkey or Argentina. After all it is intended for people who reside in Turkey or Argentina. If it does not work, I am not affiliated with any of the entities listed below or linked to and cannot guarantee any outcome. I can only read comments on this platform and others to share them with you. Your patience is appreciated. Please do not take it personally.

Thanks for such an amazing writeup and details.

i had done this before your post so made the mistake of doing this on my main google account.

everything is working as it should be but google store is showing Turkey.

I deleted Australia account and re created it but nothing worked.

If i delete my turkey profile what happen to my youtube premium subscription, its a monthly plan as there is no yearly plan on it?

how can i keep my youtube on auto renewal in turkey and delete by turkey profile?

        • Hi, thanks for your comment :)

I guess if you delete your Turkey profile you can always sign up to Turkey Youtube again via a different account in the family. Signing up to Youtube is much more easier with less hassles.

Deleting the profile means Youtube can no longer charge you anymore… so you’ll have to re-sign up

          • @I Smell Pennies: Thanks will try today and let other know what worked

Google tends to bring down the ban hammer without warning and for seemingly non-existent reasons. Any track record of Google flagging this?

    • @incipient Old wives tale, it would be all over reddit if this was the case.

      • +1

it does happen, but it’s extremely rare and maybe they flag accounts who have suspicious activity or content. the majority 99.9% have not been banned

    • +1

I've had my YT Premium through Argentina for a couple of years now. Even when I'd had chat support from Google they've never mentioned any issues relating to that.

    • Only if you're a content creator (YouTube or app dev)

  • +21

Just be careful if you're thinking of using this as a backup with intent to bulk retrieve at a later date.

Google takeout is a f****n piece of s***t to use. Alot of media goes missing from the downloads, meta data is stripped and on separate folders. These issues have been going on for years and I don't think Google cares at this point to fix it.

    • +16

+1 here. Do not take this advice lightly and is one of my main reasons for diversifying my Cloud solutions away from Google. I had 10+ years of photos on Google Photos that have all EXIF/Location/Image metadata stripped from Google Takeout (ending up as a useless JSON file that you need to find tools to re-patch the image with it).

      • +1

+2 Even the download links are a total crap show. I had to turn off all plugins and blockers of all sorts just to get the damn link to work. The worst thing is you only get one try per link so if you happen to accidentally cancel it or have an error due to ad/script blockers, you have to request and wait the 1-2 days again.

      • What do people recommend as an alternative?

        • +1

Personally, I just went with iCloud. I'm an iPhone user anyway and it ties in perfectly with the ecosystem. But it's comparing apples to oranges as Google Photos face and image recognition is miles ahead of anything else.

For those on non-iPhone/Android phones, Google Photos is really your only viable alternative. There is Amazon Photos and DropBox etc. but the integration with the phone isn't as good.

What I would say is for those that can't leave Google Photos, at least back up your photos to another service at the same time. It's a bit more expensive, but worth it in the long run.

    • Have you tried using Rclone to bulk download?

      • +2

"When Images are downloaded this strips EXIF location (according to the docs and my tests). This is a limitation of the Google Photos API and is covered by bug #112096115.

The current google API does not allow photos to be downloaded at original resolution. This is very important if you are, for example, relying on "Google Photos" as a backup of your photos. You will not be able to use rclone to redownload original images. You could use 'google takeout' to recover the original photos as a last resort"

    • I was just about to ask if YouTube premium India family account would cause issues signing up to this?

    • Yes, it's common error now. Try YT Argentina or YT Turkey.

      • i have youtube premium India. How to change it to YT argentina or YT Turkey? Do I need to get a new gmail address?

wow, that's crazy savings but also crazy effort and workarounds to access the savings… Not sure I'm up to the challenge or if it's worth the trouble when/if google finds out?

Does this need to be done on an annual basis when renewing?

  • +4

Great post but anyone using this as a single storage / backup location should be weary that Google has in the past straight up banned people under ToS with no warnings for doing similar 'workarounds' and they've lost all their data.

    • Reference?

      • -3

There are numerous Reddit/OzB/other tech forum posts about it. I'm sure some searching will find you the references you need :)

        • So none, except Do your own research?

          • +5

@M00Cow: No, there are quite a few. You can even find multiple people reporting the bans on the previous deal, linked in the 2nd sentence of this post.

Reposting this deal from last year

In case you're unable to scroll to the top of the screen, here's the link: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/710753

It's not my job to post every single possible reference to it if people don't want to do the bare minimum of searching themselves, even when it's linked at the start of what they just read.

            • +12

              @bozzonac:

It's not my job to post every single possible reference to it

You made a substantial claim, without any evidence. Then someone asked for a reference and you generically said its on OzB & Reddit, again without any evidence.

Your link above doesn't appear to do that either.

Plenty of people make stuff up and post it on here (and heaven forbid onreddit). It doesn't make it true.

              • +6

@M00Cow: Ok, I wasn't claiming to have specific first-hand evidence though? The link in the original post does have people reporting that it has occurred for them. When I see a workaround like this, especially one that has been previously posted, I tend to do a quick search on the previous post and on Google / forums to see user reviews / comments on service. That's the best you're going to get from anyone on the internet, so how would me linking a hypothetical scientific report / controlled survey change that? They're still written by people you don't know, with unknown trustworthiness and sourced on the internet.

The facts of the matter are that Google's ToS prohibit these sort of actions, which means they are able to suspend and cancel your service / account. Whether or not if you want to believe other persons' comments on the internet is up to you.

YMMV, so take whatever you want away from my original comment.

            • -3

@bozzonac: dude if you're going to make an assertion like that the burden of proof is kinda on you

              • +10

@harro112: The OP re-posted the deal that they also posted 6ish mths ago. They linked it in the second sentence of the post. There are clearly people posting on that last post with reports of their accounts being suspended / banned.

If you're going to the effort of requesting proof, should you not also go to the effort of viewing the last post from 6ish mths ago (linked at the start of the post) where it would be more likely to have information about any repercussions from completing the workaround?

                • +2

@bozzonac: I will put a warning on this post for the sake of it. Stop arguing guys

              • +9

@harro112: There's no burden on him to do anything. It's not like he has published medical research in a bloody thesis!
He's a guy on the internet offering an info which may or may not be factual. The burden is on anyone wanting to take advantage of this bargain to do their own research.

        • +4

Didn't plan to make a scene, it was a true question. Why would anyone risk getting banned from Google for a saving of $100 a year? That's what I'm trying to understand

          • -2

@BargainCowboy: You had every right to enquire about a reference. At least you didn't make accusations or have unrealistic expectations.

    • +2

Agree, not worth risking your data or getting banned.
Don't even know what google takeout is, but pay $2.50/m for 100GB Google One (and never used over half really). Would need too much space to store my lossless cds but they are on various hard drives.

        • Get a pixel for everyone? Or manually switch accounts logged in on the pixel then do bulk backups

      • Hey, any more info on how this works? I have an old pixel 2 lying around

        • +2

Pixel 2 will lose unlimited storage at original quality on Photos starting on Saturday, January 16, 2021. After that date, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners will need to either use “High Quality” backup, which compresses photos and videos, or they’ll need to continue with “Original Quality” at the expense of Google One storage.

Just set the photo quality to high quality on your pixel 2 Google Photos backup. Disable photo backup on your current phone, install SyncThing and get it to sync the Camera folder from the new phone to the Pixel 2 so that it handles all the uploading to Google photos.

Periodically delete all the local photos from the Pixel 2 when it's running low on space.

        • Or if you have a spare arvo, unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM. PixelExperience is pretty good (naturally). Or you can use any ROM, install Magisk and Zygisk, then install Pixelify. I just did the latter today and now my Pixel 2 XL has all the latest AI features that the Pixel 7 Pro has including all those awesome call features. 🤑

      • +1

Would have to be the first owner and buy new.
Only for photos taken with that device isn't it..

        • I don't believe it has to be the first owner – as long as you have activated the device on your account, you will have it. The old owner would relinquish the privilege after they sell it.

Only for photos taken with that device isn't it..

Not necessarily. Although, I find this a bit annoying to do, so I only use it when I know I will produce a large volume of long videos (e.g. at a concert or on holiday). If so, I turn off Google Photos backup on my primary device, then sync the photos across to the Pixel. I then delete the photos off my primary device, and resume Google Photos backup for my day-to-day photos.

Can never get this stuff to work. If im not signed into google it shows in Lira, as soon as i log into it goes back to AUD

    • It might be your Australian payment profile redirecting the payment to AUD. Please read the entire post to see my workaround if this is the case.

Sometimes it shows AUD initially but when you click on the plan you want, it switches to TRY

I have an Argentina payment profile from YouTube premium and added a Turkiye profile but I still only see AUD

Our family has 20 accounts so we should be fine, 15gig*20 pretty generous.

    • There is a limit to the number of members for a Google Family?

      • -2

        Good for you.

      • Yea… I am pretty sure the limit is 5….

Thanks OP. I was just about to sort something out as my 200Gb plan is at 190Gb and I wasn't really keen to jump to a 2TB plan in AUD. I don't know why Google don't have any plans between 200Gb and 2TB. Anyway, thanks heaps! I will give this a good read and follow what you have done. You are awesome!

I deleted my turkey payment profile(family manager) and only have Australian, but my google play store is still Turkey any idea?

    • You need to change your country of origin, go to: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/7431675?hl=en

The only thing ive found with this is the same as the OP, you family profile and Country is now in Turkey, plus because i had to delete everything to change back to AUD i cant resubscribe….so will wait to have until it expires.

Hmm, I’ll have to look into this (it’s hard as I do not have an Android)

For now, my workaround is to create a new Google account purely to be used for downloading Australian apps on the Play Store.

  • If i delete my Turkey payment method what will happen next year when my subscription will be due for renew? Theh will charge me for Turkey pricing or Australian?

    • +1

If you delete your Turkey payment method, the currently subscription effectively is cancelled (you still have the full month or year access depending on the plan you chose).

Once it plan expires, come back and sign up again. You only do it once a year, well worth the savings :)

thanks for the answer. if i don't cancel it and after one year change country back to Australia what would happen? My payment still be in TRY? Or i need to do this whole sing up process again?

        • +1

If you don’t cancel it and assuming you make no changes to your account, it will continue charging/renewing in TRY. You can always check in your Google One account and see what the next charge will be

          • +2

@I Smell Pennies: Be aware your country will be in Turkey so no AU google Play store.

            • +2

@XCelR8: I’ve stressed this many times in the post as it’s the main biggest problem here. Thanks for reminding :)

    • +1

You'd want to cancel the sub before this and do the process again. Even if you forget to renew, your data will still be there, just unable to upload as you'll revert to bugger all storage (free account)

  • +4

Word of warning that doesn't get noted.

If you change to Turkey you are gonna get Turkish app store.

It can't be changed. Unless you cancel.

Updates will still work with your Aussie apps but that's it.

So don't use your main Gmail.

I have had a similar issue.

I made a new Google account based in Turkey and signed up to Google One. Added my 'main' google as a family member. Now my 'main' account Play Store is locked in TRY. I can't download some Aussie apps on my main account anymore.

Google support can see my 'main' account is based in Aus, all my payment methods are Australian and they can't find a solution.

Upvote for the clear explanation though. I must have done something different in the past.

Sheesh your living on the edge asking Google for help with rorting their system. There's plenty of posts in Reddit or here explaining how to get it back to Australia

        • Can only change it like once a year or something too

      • +7

I have a workaround for this if you're on Android. Just create another google account based in Australia and add it to your phone. Whenever you want to download an app from Australia, just switch to the Australian Google account by clicking on the top right in Play Store.

Then you'll have access to the Australian Play Store.

        • +1 Exactly as I stated in the notes section. It’s the only workaround I know, and takes like a minute to do. Once you make the account just leave it signed in on the Play Store, unless you want to get paid Turkey apps for cheap then just switch it

        • That's the workaround I've been using. Just not ideal.

        • Is there a way to create a new google account without using a phone number?

      • Lot of effort all this lol and risking your Google account

    Appreciate the formatting :)

Hmmm, aren't these country spoofing "bargains" against most services ToS? Definitely can't do it on steam for example
