Bendigo Bank Ready Credit Card

This is a repost from the original deal here:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742184/

Remember OzBargain has their Wiki here for all cards similar to Bendigo Bank's Ready Credit Card.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra…

This card could be good for people looking to go on overseas holidays over the xmas/ new year period and beyond.
It has some advantages other cards don't have like a lower minimum credit limit, joint accounts and travel insurance.

Joint Accounts Available

Bendigo Bank support joint credit card holders.
Joint account means the credit facility is opened under two peoples names. Not many banks offer this on credit cards.
https://www.finder.com.au/joint-account-credit-cards

BSB/Account Number linked to the card

Which enables you to send fast payments directly onto the card. No need to send money in via BPAY.
Not all banks support sending fast payments via BSB/Account No, so you will need to check with your respective bank.

Other features

  • Uses the Mastercard Exchange Rate (https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert…)
  • 0% International Fee
  • $0 Yearly Fee
  • Joint accounts available (you apparently need to go into a branch to set this up)
  • $0 Additional Card Holder Fee
  • 90 Days Travel Insurance (inc cancellation cover)
  • Extended Warranty on purchases
  • Purchase Protection on purchases
  • $3000 minimum credit limit

Bendigo Bank is also considered an 'ethical bank' with no investments in fossil fuel's according to Market Force:

@dqtl74: Wise is not covered by the Australian Government's Financial Claims Scheme (FCS). For this reason, I wouldn't put a cent into Wise.

                      • -1

@YesPleaseThankYou: I guess that's down to the individual to make the choice whether to use it or not.

Personally I have both Wise and UP accounts, the Wise is more or less untouched when I'm at home. I mainly use it to receive payments from friends and family overseas (which I cash out as soon as I get it). I actually do use UP day to day when shopping online.

            • @bugsbunny:

Wouldn't it be better to put that 10K into a debit card

If you have a home loan, that money is better sitting in your offset account, effectively paying you about $10/week in saved interest charges.

Even if you keep the bulk of that money in a savings account, regularly moving only what you need to the transaction account, you'll earn considerably lower interest, and have to pay tax on that interest.

The credit card wins in financial terms, and in convenience terms.

And should you ever have a fraudulent charge on your credit card, you just ring the card provider and tell them. They sort it out, and they're pretty quick as it's their money they're getting back. With a debit card, that's YOUR money that is suddenly unavailable for paying bills, and the bank can take months to recover it.

  • Anybody had difficulty applying for this card? I've always wanted this card but always got rejected. I have an ANZ and CBA card (which I took because they approved me) and can't remember if Bendigo have a rule about not having more than 2 cards

    • rule about not having more than 2 cards

Never heard of such a rule. They should be judging you base on your credit score / history.

I have a good credit score, but I still got rejected. So who knows how Bendigo makes their decisions.

    • No lenders/banks have such stupid rule - they wanted you to be in more debt (legally) !!!

As thangcuoi said, the approval would be on your ability to replay debt based on your current employment/salary, current debt plus the one you apply for now plus other bits and bobs like stable income, dependant child , expenses etc.

Note, each bank would have their own approval algorithm. You can get approved by one but rejected from the other for same amount, happened to me more than once.

  • How does this compare to MyCard as it now replaced Citibank Signature Card

    • +2

If you have both then use Bendigo for overseas, Mycard in Australia for getting points

  • Last time I applied, they put me on a waiting list then rejected me over 2 months later.

I have a good credit score and clearly could make the repayments.

    • Credit scores can mean jackshit to most of them. Some can be strict with approval process others may be more relaxed with you if you have had a history with them.

Last year I applied just for 3K card with them and got instant rejection. Next day applied for a $15K card with ANZ and got approval within 48hrs. Mind you, I wanted to apply both of them during that time because I needed to get the Bendigo for travel and the ANZ for cashback promotion.

  • Took 1 day for them to approve my application. I have two BNPL (One from Commbank one from Zip) which i havent used for like a few years. Also i apply for only 3k limit (enough for all my travel expense haha)

    • Also took 1 day to approve my online application (after being rejected twice last year or was it 2023?).

I opened an everyday account first this time, and waited a week before applying for the credit card. It might also helped that I have cancelled one of my other credit cards, and waited for it to be removed from my credit history. Thirdly, my mortgage has also shrunk significantly.

Who knows why I got rejected last time.

Let's just hope that they keep the free insurance cover around, as it's the only reason I wanted this card.

      • haha bugger, the app is so ridiculously slow and not responsive. I cant believe it's the same developer as Up bank. I reinstalled it twice now but all the pages are just blank. Internet bank is fine, feel like i'm dealing with agribank back home haha (notice your username lol)

        • App is taking tad longer to load after authenticated, but after that all snappy and fluid to navigate around for me.

Does anyone know and have used/claim travel insurance via Bendigo Ready Credit Card? Also does it cover both international and domestic flight, accommodation and car rental? Is there any excess fee and if so how much?

    • +2

      Read the terms.

      • Term doesn't say how user experience when claim is lodged

        • If the insurer doesn't meet its obligation to you, you can lodge a complaint with AFCA.

        • T&C covers 2/3 of your questions. Matter facts, it helps to review the terms in detail if they meet your expectations for this sort of important thing.

    • +1

Yes - was meant to go to sri lanka december last year but there was a massive cyclone and we cancelled a lot of things. Submitted a claim and everything was paid less the excess.

  • I already hold the card and am reviewing the conditions of the complimentary travel insurance for our upcoming trip to Vietnam.

Based on my understanding of the policy, it appears that a minimum spend of $500 is required per family member, which would mean a total of $2,000 for a family of four. Could you please confirm if this interpretation is correct?

I have already purchased the international flight tickets using a debit card to avoid credit card fees of over $120. If the per-person spend requirement does apply, it may be difficult to meet the eligibility criteria through hotel bookings and domestic flights alone.

    • +1

before leaving Australia at least $500 of each of the
spouse and/or dependant’s prepaid travel costs for
example, return overseas travel ticket, prepaid overseas
accommodation, prepaid cruise, travel or tour, are
charged to the accountholder’s card account; and

So yes, must paid at least $2000 upfront for family of 4 in order get the free travel insurance.

      • Thanks

    • -1

I have already purchased the international flight tickets using a debit card to avoid credit card fees of over $120

Wow. You pay with a debit card (presumably a non-Bendigo Bank debit card) but want the benefits of a Bendigo Bank credit card. You somehow thought this was a good idea and would get you free insurance benefits. You then also thought it was a good idea to come here and tell us about your 'good' idea.

The way the human mind works for some people is fascinating.

      • -1

Calm down mate. I still have domestic flights and accommodation to book. I was just checking the requirement of $500 total or $500/person.

I also have comm bank ultimate that has only $500 transaction not per person. So checking which card should I use.

If both card doesn't work happy to pay for insurance cover with the saving of $120 credit card fees.

  • I would strongly advise going into a branch to apply for this card. If you apply in a branch, the banker will assist you their best to get you this card, if you apply online, you have a chance of being rejected by their ai and, with no reason why.

    • I got rejected online and in the bank. My application was accepted 12 months later after I have opened an everyday account, and then open the credit card account.

    • Correct.
I got rejected online, not beause I wasnt financially viable, but because I fell outside thier "basic" selection criteria.
Online application obviously has been set up for salary/wage earners only.
Same issue with many others here.

Best way is to fill out the application form and take it into a branch.

      • +1

Took me so long to get it though, I finally got it today, took 1½ months, but it was better than applying online.

      • +1

They were very strict on handing it out to me though, they asked me for absolutely everything, more than what I provided, than when I got a home loan with Macquarie. If I had applied online ,I strongly believe, I would've been rejected.

  • Mine was approved within 2 days online.

  • Been pondering if I should hold on to my NAB platinum debit, which I have mainly for zero international fee and travel insurance, and seems like this would be a good replacement. Thinking to apply online, but being self-employed, wonder if I might hit a snag like some people seem to have?

    • NAB Platinum Visa Debit card Monthly card fee $10

100% try to get this if you can

      • Ah sorry if I was unclear, but that's the one I currently have. Thinking it would be nice to have no monthly fee at all, but perhaps the NAB card is superior to the Bendigo Bank one here in other ways?

        • +1

I mean get on bendigo so you don't have to pay any fee.

          • @CodeXD: Aha, I get you now. Understood, thanks for vouching for it!

    • +1

If l recall correctly Nab and Bendigo use the same underwriter. May have changed.

Most credit card insurance is not great. But its better to have this rather than have no insurance. If you don't read the pds your never ever be able to claim against the insurer.

  • +1

Can someone smart clarify this one? Based off reading someone's posted bad experience of accessing Bendigo's complimentary travel insurance in past.

Page 20: 'If you cannot prove the value of the items, the most we will
pay for each individual item is 10% of the limit shown for that type of item in the Part C - Benefit Limits - 3.1 Luggage.'

Meaning if there are no receipts for items in luggage, they would pay 10% of $500 listed, and then charge an excess of $250?

    • +1

That’s how I would interpret it, yes. The excesses eat into simple one-item claims.

      • Thanks. This helped me make up my mind. TO not apply :)

        • +2

It’s still a fantastic card for essentially free travel insurance and for what it’s worth I copped a bigger excess on a claim I made through a St George card with Allianz insurance.

They’d likely all have similar caveats to prevent fraudulent lost luggage claims - check a few other card insurances to see.

I’m going to apply - this is a fantastic keeper card for travel while I churn high value ones.

        • -4

What idiot would purchase something expensive overseas (or here) and not take a picture of the receipt immediately?

          • -1

@YesPleaseThankYou: Who’s dumb enough to assume that’s the only reason for the cards’ acceptability. And there are other ways as well. Just needs not being rude.

            • @PopCounty: That's what you were responding to, and you gave no other:

This helped me make up my mind. TO not apply :)

Sure, you might have other reasons, but you seemed to be VERY concerned about that 1 insurance element.

  • This credit card has issues with Gojek in Indoensia. Also have issue with Qantas authorised office in Vietnam. I haven’t faced this issue on other debit or credit cards.

Wise transfer payment are not always better than using this credit card for small transaction. The fee charge for small transaction is very high.

Also if there ever a dispute on a wise transaction or any debit card your cash is placed on hold. If you use a credit card it place on hold and you dont need to pay it.

    • I've used this in Japan & Vietnam without any hiccups

      • Did you use the merchant mentioned?

  • Can we do this with up as well?
