JB Hi-Fi "Factory Scoops" - Seagate Portable USB 3.0 1TB Expansion Drive $63.20 + $5 Shipping

1890

It appears as though JB Hi-Fi is doing their own "Click Frenzy" style deal. There's a few cheap bargains up there across two pages to check out.

Best deal that stood out was the portable Seagate 1TB hard drive for $63.20 plus $5 shipping. Had a quick look around and that appears to be the cheapest it's been for at least a while. USB 3.0 compatible and you should be able to price-match at OW if you want to pick it up in-store.

Deal ends at midnight Wednesday and the sale is online only!

Just got one from Glen Waverley. They've now cottoned on to the shipping so all up $64.79. Ended up getting the 15.5mm one for clarification sake. Unboxed and my gosh, it's ridiculously small.

One can never have enough external storage

  • A little bit thicker than i expected, but for $60 OW pricematch im happy. (compared to the 99 WD one currently on sale at JB) Got two. http://i.imgur.com/WyRgh.jpg

Are all these upvotes for JB or for Officeworks?

    • +1

Are all these upvotes for JB or for Officeworks?

      Good point/question.

  • Can someone crack one open and let us know if it's a 9.5mm drive or 12.5mm drive internal?

    • +1

OK, just a sec. I will have to measure it.

IT IS A BEAUTIFUL, STANDARD SIZE, MOMENTUS DRIVE - 9.5mm THICK.

      Model: ST1000LM024
      HDD P/N: HN-M101MBB/AVN

One can re-use the case and the USB 3 interface.

      • Awesome, thanks for that. Just to clarify did you get the 300 or 301 model?

        • +1

Just to clarify did you get the 300 or 301 model?

          From OfficeWorks.

          STBX1000301

          To remove the drive.

Do NOT attempt to remove the top.

Remove the bottom first. Starting from the side. Not from the front or back.

There are small 'clips' around the edges.

          Then 'do' the other side.

Then pop off the bottom cover

Turn it over, and remove the drive unit from the top cover.

Remove the screws. Peel off the tape.

          Remove the USB 3 interface.

You can re-use the case and the USB interface.

        • Thanks again, now to wait and see which version we get from JB Hifi: 300 or 301.

  • Just bought one online from JB…. good price for an impulse purchase

    • Just in time as they're all sold out now.

      • all sold out now.

At JB maybe. Still lots at OfficeWorks Bondi Junction.

        • Officeworks won't (or at least shouldn't) price match a product that is out of stock.

        • OW receipts might help…. MIGHT

the wireless tv is gone too

        • Just went to local office works in Adelaide an was refused apparently because they don't price match online deals……Farrrrrrkkkkkkkk

        • They lied to you. It clearly states on the OW website that online deals are matched — but that they take into consideration any delivery cost.

        • I went to the one on Anzac hwy
          $60, I got 10 of them

        • +1

          10………..?
That's a lot of pron in your collection there.

        • yeah.. what would you do with anotehr 10gb all of a sudden? :O

        • nah, theres no point collecting pron, just stream on demand ;)

what do i need 10tb of portable storage for?
first person to guess the right answer gets a prize!

        • "what do i need 10tb of portable storage for?"
          jv fan club's mailing list?

  • So is it supposed to be actually the 15mm or the 22mm drive?

I got the 22mm as they said the 15mm drive wasn't it.

    Any clarification?

    • Some people got the 300 and others the 301. Seems like luck of the draw. I managed to get the 301 which is bloody thin!

      • Hmm.. OK. Are you referring to the model of the actual drive inside?

Because what I mean is there are two different models being the external enclosure sizes, one larger than the other.

I assume thye are the same drives inside though?

        • I thick the fatter one has another platter, or something

        • The 300 is the bigger enclosure. Not sure about the drive inside though…

  • Nogo for Officeworks Highett, tried there a few hours ago. They had people price match earlier in the day, but even so he still checked the website, and by that time it had sold out.

  • Got lucky at OW Traralgon. Picked up a 300, then picked up a second one, which was a 301. They asked if the offer was still valid and I said yes, but it was online only. They included the shipping, so was $64. Still a great deal. Glad I got it, I freaked when it sold out at JB earlier today.

  • I managed to place order with JB!

I placed it in my shopping cart but wasn't sure if I really want it. Was going to get it from OW then found JB had it sold out. Just came back home found it's still in the cart, checked out with no problem.

I also found I can still add it to my cart from the "JBHiFi Factory Scoops" page I left open last night by clicking the "Add to Cart" button.

Not sure if JB will honor it but it wouldn't hurt of trying :)

  • I get a feeling OW will drop the "beat it by 5%" guarantee. They'll still price match the lowest price, but it doesn't make much sense to them to beat it. They're just going to get Ozbargained if they do that. The list price is $99. If they sell it at $60, they lose $39 worth of margin because no one will buy it from JB, everyone will go to OW instead, even though it's JB's deal. If they only price match, there will be no advantage going to one place over another, and some people will buy from the deal's originator instead, saving OW some lost margin. They'll be able to sell it for the higher price once the deal is over, instead of getting OzB'd.

I can't see the 5% lasting too long, especially after crazy deals like this one.

    • I have no idea what you're trying to convey there.

      • He's saying OW is losing too much with their 5% guarantee, so they might drop it soon. Deals like this could 'open their eyes'.

When a competitor manages to get a good price for a product with razor-thin margins (or a loss leader), OW has to beat it by a further 5%, possibly making no profit, or maybe even losing money.

        • +1

LOL, i wonder who had more sales on this. JB or OW

        • There is no evidence that OfficeWorks is losing money, none at all.

Further, it is OfficeWorks which advertises "Lowest Prices". The price guarantee (and beat it by 5%) is consistent with its advertised slogan.

        • There is no evidence that OW is not losing money, none at all.

You're not getting the point here.

        • I didn't make the initial claim. He who makes the claim provides the evidence.

OfficeWorks has clearly determined that offering the deal is worth any short-term loss.

Of course over the longer term things will be reviewed — that's how business works.

        • You made the claim that there is no evidence OW is losing money. Can you provide the evidence?

Of course over the longer term things will be reviewed — that's how business works.

And that is exactly what he was saying. Do read his last line again:

I can't see the 5% lasting too long, especially after crazy deals like this one.

        • WTF? If there is no evidence then there is no evidence.

        • Nice move ignoring the last statement which shows you didn't read the original post properly.

        • Move on mate. You're just going around in circles.

        • -1

You sound like the kind of person who's never ever wrong in an argument, to the chagrin of friends and family. Admitting you made a mistake is nothing to be ashamed of. I have no qualms admitting I made a mistake if I clearly misread something. Just a tip.

        • There is no evidence that OfficeWorks is losing money, none at all.

I didn't say they were losing money. I said they were losing margins.

Now if some competitor was having a clearance, they have their reasons for doing that. Perhaps they are an older model. Perhaps they aren't selling well and there is limited space on the shelf so they want to make room for a different product. OW's situation will be different. The factors leading to a clearance won't be in play at OW. Maybe their supplier is not giving them as good a price.

In cases like this, price matching or beating by 5% might lead to a loss. It would only be reasonable to assume that at least some stock is sold at below cost if price matching a competitor who's clearing them out and also making a loss.

Especially if you're getting to OW to price beat a grey import, or a product from Amazon as some people have been able to do. OW are getting their stock from local distributors which are more expensive than overseas.

To say that they never make a loss on any sale ever is a bit presumptuous, evidence be damned. Is there evidence that losses occur? I don't know.. I haven't seen their books and neither have you. But it's only a reasonable or educated guess there may be losses when a competitor does something crazy. Do I need to have 'evidence' to make an assumption like this? (And really what could realistically count as evidence, short of seeing the figures in their computer?) I don't think so. Some people have gotten them to price match grey imports selling for half the local price, and Amazon sales for even less than half! Now either they make massive margins on each item sold when not being price matched, or crazy price matches are costing them money.

I doubt that they make massive margins on each item they sell, or else people like Gerry Harvey would stop bitching about imports and just lower their prices to be more competitive with imports. They don't because they can't. Local distributors are the gougers.

  • Thanks to OP for post.

Looks like a decent drive, got one from OW.
But I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it with that prissy short USB cable.

  • Anyone had a shipping notice from JB yet?

    • Nope, but I ordered the tv thing too which in the email I received was on pre-order (although on the site it said in-stock).

    • I did. Anyone got a valid tracking number? Mine is "Tracking Number: [picked up]", have no idea where my parcel is.

    • no for me as well :(

Thats one thing that really ticks me off when ordering from most AU online shops, once they have your money or the paypal order money thing they take their sweet time…

update: I emailed them this morning & within 15mins got the following response

Currently most in-stock orders are received within 5 business days

If you have an enquiry regarding a delayed or missing order outside this timeframe you can now have your nearest store attend to your issue quickly.

Go to www.jbhifi.com.au/contact-us and select the "Where is my online order?" option. Complete the action form and your nominated store will respond

At least now I know I need to wait at least 5 bus days & was impressed with how quick they responded to my email

Just sent an email asking when order will be sent received these 2 emails minutes apart

    " Hi,

    Thank you for your email.

We have cancelled your order as requested. We apologise that we were unable to fulfil your order within the time frame stated, and regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please note, we have not charged payment for this order - We only process purchases when orders are ready to dispatch.

    Then 3 minutes later

    " Hi,

Our apologies for our previous email as we know you did not request your order to be cancelled.

Unfortunately we have received an overwhelming amount of orders for this product and have exhausted all available stock.

We sincerely apologise for what has happened here and regret any inconvenience caused.

Ohh well did't really need it just compulsive buy and they did't take the money out of my paypal so they did't have any obligation I guess to fulfill the order

    • When did you order?

    • Just noticed I was never charged also, but haven't received any emails.

      • /me makes a mental note: "Don't trust JB Hi-Fi".

  • About midday on the day it started

    • Really, they had it going for two days. If they've exhausted by midday on the first day, I wonder how many have missed out. I ordered about 10.30 on the first day. Haven't received a dispatched email, wonder if it's been cancelled

  • Mine keeps dropping out when I watch MKV's from it or copy files from it, like it's not getting enough power.

    • Give it more power. Try it plugged straight into the back of the mainboard of a desktop pc.

      • Yeah that's what I've done, damn ITX boards! >>;]

  • I bought two 300 model units (the box on display said 301 but when they got the stock behind the counter they were 300s) and ran them through CrystalDiskInfo. They are 5400 RPM drives, disappointingly. My older model (yellow box) with slanted edges was 7200 RPM, and even more disappointingly also half the thickness of these "newer" models.

But for $60 you can't go wrong I guess. I used to back up a lot of my stuff to DVDR but now the price per GB on ext HDDs is cheaper than DVDR, so I might just use HDDs as the new DVDR.

    • yeh, the 300 models are quite a bit fatter

    • So the 301 drives are 7200rpm then?

      • No, 5400, well mine is, from OW.

  • +1

I only just got an email today saying that the item was going t be picked in the next two days and should arrive a few days after that. I ordered this on the 20th.

    • same, wonder what model they will give us

    • same here…

Your order will be picked and packed within 60 hours. Once the order has shipped, you will receive an email confirmation. Then allow another 2-5 business days for metro delivery

Im just happy its kinda on its way

According to both pccasegear & scorptec the STBX1000300 has a 3yr warranty

  • Just got mine delivered. Wow, not only is it fatter than the 301, its bigger overall. Will check later to see if its the same drive inside

  • +4

The drives inside both the 300 and 301 are the same - ST1000LM024 5400rpm drives. only difference is the case size

    • Beautiful, thank you very much.

    • How do you know for sure? I was certain that I had read differently here or on Whirlpool. I now can't find the links (damn it!).

If what you say is true (and I hope that it is), I'll be removing one of the two 500 GB drives in my laptop and replacing it with this 1 TB. I'll be downgrading speed from 7200 to 5400 RPM, but really need the internal space.

I'll see if I can hunt around for some more info.

    • haven't opened up the drive to confirm but based on info from Hard Disk Sentinel, the drive in my 300 may be the ST1000LM010-9YH146 which is a thicker 12.5mm drive.

  • I inquired today and JB said my order was in the final stages of processing. I had placed the order on the 20th.

    • My 2x hdd status updated to complete today and received an email about its dispatch. Got a shipment email about the tv thing yesterday. All ordered on the 20th in one transaction.

Odd thing is, I ordered around 2pm. Lazer said he/she ordered around midday but his/hers got cancelled?

  • Got my hdd delivered today. it is about 2x as big as normal 2.5 externals but still happy

  • Ordered 21/11. Was delivered today 28/11 in Perth. I got the 300 model.

  • Received it today. 300 model, same size (22.0mm) as my Seagate Go flex 1 tb. 3 years warranty.

    • is 300 model the 7200rpm model?

  • Anyone got their PCTV set yet?

    • I don't think so. Apparently it was sent a day before my hdds according to the emails. However, I got my hdds yesterday but no pctv. Will check tonight if the pctv has been delivered when I get home tonight.

      • Nope no delivery.

    • +1

Both the HDD and PCTV arrived today.

To get the PCTV working with your computer's existing wifi rather than the included wifi dongle, you need to:

      • Plug the antenna into the tuner into the PCTV wifi AP and turn it on. Don't hook it up to your network yet.

      • Connect to the AP with your computer's wifi adaptor. You'll be assigned an ip in the 192.168.2.x address space.

      • Log in to the AP at 192.168.2.1 username admin password admin

      • Go to LAN configuration and change Static to Automatic (DHCP).

      • Install the TVCenter 4 software (the first button on the cd installer). Do not run TVCenter at the end of the install.

      • Connect the PCTV wifi AP to your network. Be aware at this point it's running as an open AP.

      • Go to Start, PCTV Systems, Tools, w-lanTV. The tray icon should turn green and drivers should start installing after a short while.

      • Right-click on the tray icon, click on the tuner name, and configure. That will launch your browser to the AP's new DHCP'ed IP.

      • Disable the wifi AP in settings, or enable encryption if you'd like to use it as an AP.

      • Run TVCenter and it should start scanning for channels.

The CD installer also has a windows media center button to install drivers required for WMC.

      • Thanks for your feedback!

Is there a function in AP or SW to adjust the streams' bitrate?
Also, hows the experience in WMC?

        • No settings - it just sends the full digital stream that's received from the antenna.

I haven't tried it in WMC unfortunately. I set it up at work for someone to watch tv on their computer, so the included TVCenter software was easier to use.

      • When did you receive email about the shipment? Wondering how long it took to arrive.

        • +1

I got the order confirmation for the PCTV and HDD on the 20th and 21st, an order update plus a shipped notification for the PCTV on the 23rd, an order update for the HDD on the 27th, and finally a shipped notification for the HDD on the 28th.

Both packages arrived today, the 29th. Their ordering system is a bit of a mess.

        • Hi,

how they ship by? TOLL? or ?

  • So I just received a 2nd 'Order Shipped' confirmation email for the hdd I purchased. It has the exact same order number as the first one which I already received in the mail today. Most likely an error with their emailing system but I won't be complaining if a 2nd hdd turns up.
Anyone else get another confirmation email?

EDIT: On closer inspection the first email was an 'Order Status' and the 2nd 'Order Shipped'. :(
Still a bit odd that I get a 'shipped' notification days after they actually sent it.

  • Just received my HDD here in Perth, looks to be a 300.

  • Ah can't get the tv dongle to work. Keeps getting stuck on step two saying no device is connected. If someone gets stuck at that stage and finds a workaround, please post here.

    • Did you try power cycling it or plugging the dongle in before turning on AP?

      • Yup, tried all the basic troubleshooting procedures. I'll give it another shot when I can be bothered. Thanks.

        • How did you set it up? Did you set the AP to DHCP?

        • I tried it with the dongle.

    • Speaking of the dongle, has anyone else been a bit disappointed with it? There are a few significant drawbacks - short range (have to basically have receiver and AP in same room to use it), computer loses internet if TV is switched on, software that slows the PC down and sometimes crashes requiring hard reset. It's possible to me that JB marked this item down so heavily because people were returning/complaining about this item too often and JB just wanted to get rid of it entirely.

      • I haven't used it much (set it up for someone else), but you can hook up the access point to your existing home network so your computer won't lose internet access.

I didn't encounter any crashes or lockups when I was setting it up. that was on W7 x64.

        • the AP and dongle are both quite weak in my experience with this unit. I've created a wireless bridge with a cheapo $40 ddwrt router and it works fine now. As posted above it's difficult to get an interuption free signal without being in the same room, but mine is constructed from brick so YMMV

  • anyone still waiting for their delivery?
Delivery email on the 28th but it isn't here yet..

    • Still waiting for TV dongle

    • still waiting for my hard-drive…
getting items from China quicker than this…

      • Wow, have you contacted them. Shouldn't take ths long

        • I am still waiting, poor customer services. 6 emails and i have only received excuses no idea if they will post it or not. I will create a paypal dispute next week.
