How slow is this? Seems like it’s the original Pixel Watch?

    • +18

      Slow enough to be $149

    • +8

It's so slow, it'll take you to the past.

Jokes aside, how slow is it compared to what? The Pixel Watch 3? The latest Apple Watch?

I have this and it's fine, does the job and no complaints. What do you need it to do super fast?

      • It does the basics without any issues… I assume.

Any thing that requires new apps etc., would be slower as they would require more power… I assume.

        • What are these new apps? Every time I search for watch apps there's nothing new to try out

    • +3

It should be able to keep up with the times.

      • Pun intended? 😁

  • Does it need a phone or can it be used as a standalone watch for a child?

    • No standalone ability

      • +6

Even though it has 4g lte?
Or I have read that wrong?

        • Don't know why I got negged? This will only have LTE compatibility with a number shared with a mobile phone on Telstra.
          * It cannot be issued its own standalone independent number like an apple watch. *
Sure, It can be used as a 'dumb' watch…It's the crap thing with pixel watches- (I have a P2 watch with LTE)

    • Can you leave the phone at home and it will still function as a fully capable communication device / GPS tracking?

      • +2

As this is the LTE model, YES, it can work on its own without a phone (once set up). BUT you will need an eSIM plan to enable that capability.

        • +1

So you can get it an eSIM
And then send it up with Google FamilyLink to limit apps and hours etc.

          Would that be right?

          • +1

@WSDtightwad: In theory, yes. But as I'm not familiar with FamilyLink I did some quick Googling and there is a lot of confusion about its implementation. You might have to do a bit more research on this one.

            • @besttechadvisor: Thx.
Yeah, I've been trying, but crikey trying to figure out a smart watch for a small person is harder than it should be.

              • @WSDtightwad: I doubt family link works with the watch. It's not really the kind of device that requires or would want to be restricted.

                • @xmail: Well i'd like to be able to do GPS tracking, restrict apps, and restrict calls to certain parties, on the watch end.

But looking at what telcos actually support eSIMs (only Telstra, Optus and Voda… And generally none of their resellers).

And they all seem to insist that the watches eSIm and the parent phone are on the same telco.

And the parent phone one must be one of a select list of eligible handsets…. Usually only the upper tier ones.

PS: and this watch is only supported for eSIM by Telstra.

              • +1

@WSDtightwad: There is a whole separate category for kids smart watches.

                Things like the spacetalk loop.

                https://www.bigw.com.au/product/spacetalk-loop-4g-kids-smart…

Bunch of the more generic brands on amazon but you would need to make sure they havent been booted with the whole 4g VoLTE 000 call problem. Some take a nano sim as well so you can use any reseller sims.

                • +2

@Duff5000: I bought one of those space talk watches for my child and is utter crap. Terrible tracking and horrible software. For my other child I bit the bullet and got an Apple watch SE 2 refurbished. Works great, tracking's awesome( and I don't personally like Apple. ) Was only 50 bux more than ST… But if U want a phone watch for a kid, it's the better choice honestly…You can get an esim plan through better roaming for less than 10 bucks a month unlimited. Just doesn't have MMS (obviously U need a iPhone to set up A Watch)

                  • @51kabunka: Yeah this is way I'm thinking. But we aren't an iPhone household either.

                    • +1

@WSDtightwad: Yeah I'm android all the way, but my missus is Apple… I think other android watches support standalone LTE functions …maybe Samsung?

                      • @51kabunka: No Apple phones here at all.

Android watch gets over that hurdle, but if they are eSIM…. I'm still limited to postPaid on telstra, Optus, Voda only (and pretty much none of their resellers) for both the handset and watch.

A big step up from the stingy Kogan $13/m I'm paying right now.

"Apple watch for your kids" does seem kinda what I'm after though.

          • +1

@WSDtightwad: No does not work with G Family link

    • -1

Any reason you'd want to give a child a $200 watch? Many cheaper smart watches are available, or even just a $20 Casio should be sufficient to tell the time and survive a few hard knocks and splashes.

  • Battery life is terrible and doesn't even last a day.

    • +1

Compared to Apple Watch’s I think I can tolerate for $149.

      • +6

Compared to Amazfit Band 7 (~3 weeks) I cannot tolerate Apple watch & similar iJail ;) I don't even notice it's on my hand

    • -1

No wonder why Telstra are selling it

    • +4

Totally agree. I got one at launch and returned it quick smart. If you turn almost everything off you’ll get close to a full day but at that point why even bother?

      • -2

$149 not bad for a dumb watch haha but not necessary I know

      • +1

For an alternative perspective, I have Bluetooth and auto brightness on all day and get a while day out of it. And that's with regular use over the last 2 years.

      • Have you tried any other pixel watch? In market with $300 budget, my galaxy watch 4 just died and Samsung don't want to know even though water damage.

Leaning towards pixel 2 if at least get a day out of it and charge overnight or during mornings showers etc

        • I have a Pixel watch 2 purchased a few months ago. LTE model with no Sim currently, always on display is disabled, connected by Bluetooth to my phone. Lasts 2 days on average. Mainly charge it when I showed or sit at my desk when at home (not at work). Occasionally use it for tracking a run and playing music (no phone). Main grievance is the charger having prongs so I can't charge it on a wireless pad. Would be ideal to charge in the car on the way to work but too much hassle forgetting the cable over the weekend etc.

    • Not true with latest updates - I actually have one and a working day (12h with about 1h of GPS tracked exercise) leaves it with around 65% battery. So will easy last more than a day if you wear it overnight, or two if you don't

    • lasts two days for me. you might have a dud

  • +1

This will go great with my Pixel 1 phone.

  • +1

$149 is a fair price for this model I'd say, especially if you're already in the Google ecosystem AND with Telstra. Definitely not worth any more than that though, especially when you take into consideration the limited carrier support for the LTE plus the extra charge per month to enable it.

Luckily, mine came free as a redemption offer with my Pixel 7 Pro. I like it, but I would have been extremely disappointed if I had paid the ~$400 RRP at the time.
I've been fairly happy with it so far over the almost 2 years I've had it. It had a few weird quirks at first and was not terribly reliable, but they worked it out with updates and it's been rock solid for a while.

Battery life is definitely "meh" — Mine makes it through a single day with light use, but turns into a nice shiny wrist-mounted paperweight by mid-day on the following day if I have forgotten to charge it either overnight or at some other stage in my downtime. It does charge reasonably quick when needed though, I'll give it that.

    • Will be good when they get fast enough charging that 10 min or so a day will keep it going. (so you can charger it while showering)

As is stands my android based watch is collecting dust while my amazfit gts charges for about 10 min every 2 weeks.

    • There is limited telco support for the LTE on this?
Would this be locked to Telstra?
More info possible oh Frozen experienced one, please.

      • iirc only works on LTE with telstra and its a pain

      • +1

Yes. Telstra is the only carrier in Australia to support the LTE functionality of the first-gen Pixel Watch through its "One Number" service, sadly: https://support.google.com/googlepixelwatch/answer/12652073?…

I haven't looked into it for a while, but the last time I checked, it wasn't possible to make the LTE work as a separate, standalone service with its own number like you can do with an Apple Watch through BetterRoaming.

You can still use it as a normal smartwatch linked to your phone through BT/WiFi without the LTE. Sort of defeats the point of having the LTE feature there though, and you might be able find something else you like more in the same price bracket.

Truth be told, I've only really used the LTE on my Pixel watch a handful of times (when swimming mostly so I can leave the phone behind and not risk it being stolen). I'm still undecided whether it's REALLY worth the extra I have to pay each month for the privilege but knowing my luck, if I cancelled it now I'd soon after find myself in a situation where I needed it, lol. 😅

    • Would it work with aldi mobile?

      • +1

The LTE/cellular component won't, unfortunately. You can still link it to your phone with Bluetooth and WiFi, but it won't work when you are away from your phone.

  • Or Xiaomi Redmi Watch 5 Active Smartwatch with 1 week+ battery life?

    • +1

      Completely different sort of products.

Android and apple watches are like a small android or apple phone on your wrist. Everything else is for the most part a fixed set of features on a watch. The former can do drastically more than the latter…. at the expense of run time.

  • -7

    This is cheaper on catch.com.au

    • +4

Are you looking at refurbished? Not really worth saving $5 to get used….

  • Thanks, OP. Been wanting one of these for awhile. Glad to try it at this price.

Turns out I still had a bunch of points sitting in my account too, despite long not having a Telstra service. had to install the app and give them ID details and such, but hey, cheap good smartwatch yay.

  • Looking at this as a purchase for a small 13yo, is the existing band adjustable to a small teenager's wrist? Said teenager has a Pixel 6, can I confirm that while the phone is in his school bag (during school hours) connected to the phone only via BT (no LTE) it can still function as a watch to tell time and perhaps have reminder notifications pop up on the watch during the day regardless of the proximity to the pixel phone?

    • +1

Hard to say whether it will fit but you could always get another band for it cheaply enough, or ask a cobbler/shoe man (e.g Mr Minit) to punch another hole in the existing band.
Yes it should work while the phone is in his bag. You can put it into Do Not Disturb mode or adjust the notification settings on the phone too, to keep distractions during class to a minimum.
As for reminders, it syncs the calendar and alarms with your phone so any notifications/reminders you have set there will also go off on the watch regardless of wether it is in range of the phone or not.

  • I watch the Quantified Scientist videos and he's mentioned that's the new pixel watch 3 is the first time the pixel watch has had decent health tracking, and is now up their with the top crop including fit its, apple watch aand Garmins. Having said that, does anyone know if that means updated pixel and pixel 2 watches are now as good, or is the hardware holding them back?
