Been with Telstra (full 5G network) for years and recently switched to full service Optus 5G.

Better coverage overall in Sydney CBD.

Feels like the Telstra network is very congested.

    • -1

Yes ptus does have a faster network in Cities, its because all the heavy user Business use Telstra. The only reason you should be with Full Telstra is if you need to use their rural network. Otherwise Optus is a great choice.

      • +2

Not the only reason. If you want your personal details given away, optus is a great choice. If you support unconscionable conduct, optus is a great choice.

Yes ptus does have a faster network in Cities

        Any evidence for this claim?
My experience has been the exact opposite.

          • -1

@Churna: You're framing it as if Telstra's vastly superior coverage is only beneficial in rural areas, which is misleading. Telstra's extensive coverage is also extremely important in urban areas, specifically indoors.

While Vodafone and Optus might get faster speeds in clear outdoor conditions, they struggle heavily indoors compared to Telstra.

The link you provided does not differentiate between indoor vs outdoor coverage, which is a massive shortcoming.

    • Not surprised to see a comment like this.

I am a long time business customer of Telstra for mobile and use Boost yearly plans for my 5g modems (2 of).

I have noticed a gradual degradation of Telstra's speed and reliability in Sydney metro areas.

Coverage and signal is usually good (as in bars present), but speeds are abysmal.

I am currently testing an Optus eSim (free 7 day trial) and I will also test Vodafone with the aim of moving my business mobile plan to someone else or run dual sims (I could get 2 sims for the price I pay for the Telstra and I have used Felix before when working on sites in Telstra blackspots)

Optus 5G has outperformed my Telstra 5G in all tests thus far over the weekend.

Does anyone know if Amaysim is gimped in any way (besides the 200mpbs cap) in comparison to Optus full service?

I was always happy to pay a premium for reliability and service but I just don't think I am getting it from Telstra anymore.

  • Bought yesterday from TopCashback offer, lost $20.00

    • +4

TopCashback offer gives you $60 back though, right? So although it's $255 via that offer, you should be up $40.

      • the wheel is spinning, but the hamster is dead.

  • Purchased from you guys last year with the old $230 plan and a cheap Voda sim to port out for the month.

Any chance you guys are getting more of the old $230 plan on a discount or are they pretty much done?

    • +1

they dont make the sim cards anymore and im pretty sure all the sims would now be expired. This one is almost as good as the $230 one

      • Nope, still available currently (and has been previously) with expiry dates into next year -

In the comments it says that pack is out of stock and no more stock is available

          • +2

@Niche: I linked to the $230 product page as there’s clearly still stock popping up a number of times and has been since the plan officially stopped selling last year with plenty of sims still offered with expiry dates into 2026 - which is the point I was making with churna claiming all the sims would be expired by now.

        • AAAANNDDD just like that they are all out of stock, havent looked around elsewhere yet

  • +2

Thanks, bought one. I'm trusting the March 2027 expiry date listed in this post, as I couldn't see it mentioned on the product page.

    • +1

I'm sold on this expiry too, pretty useful if it's real 2027, usually the ones you see has activation dates within a month or two.

      • +2

The activation dates with a month or two are usually for cash back I think, so this should be fine.

I can't wait till my contract ends in Oct to move from boost awful reception download speeds 40 -45mbps drop outs it's been getting worse over the past 6 months .Gold Coast metro area .

    • What are you planning to move over to?

      • +1

Likely Vodafone I got a month sim to try out & it's been perfect 90 -120mbps dl & 5 bars reception as with boost 1 bar .

        • +2

Opposite situation here. Can’t wait to move out of Voda to prepaid telstra wholesale network. Just waiting for sims to come.

          • +1

@Brakus: yea vodafone was the worse for me, it says 4g, but performed like 1g, lol.

optus is closer to Vodafone than telstra, but still slow and very patchy.

telstra reins supreme for me in sydney, super fast speed all the time.
also my last road trip to melbourne i had fast speed, while everyone else in the car had optus and vodafone. i had to tether all of them because they couldn't get service or it was very very slow.

Price Beat at Officeworks for $223.25.

    • +2

Just check the expiry date on the stock in Officeworks. At least in Brisbane they were expiring within a couple of months so weren’t suitable for me to purchase.

    • I just rang officeworks
She said they don’t pricebeat because Cellpoint boost SIM card is not identical item in officeworks🧐

      • I bought from Officeworks today with pricebeat without any issues. They made me waiting for 10 mins until they called and confirmed with higher authority.

    • Thanks! Did the same; Called them up; bought it for $223.25.

  • My Boost service expires next month and I am pretty sure I can't use this to renew. I've had a pretty decent experience but I open to switching if I can find a better deal

    • You can just port out to any other $2 SIM and then port back in a couple of days later as a 'new' customer.

      • Couple of days? I thought in the past I'd read that like even an hour later is fine. That not the case these days?

        • +1

If you can .. & want to be safest and reduce any shitty backend systems refresh updates & glitches … wait 24 hours to let each carriers system batch updates.

        • I've ported out, then back to boost the next day. I can't see why you shouldn't be able to do it immediately.

      • I thought there were issues with porting if your coming to Boost from another provider that's also on the Telstra network. Is that no longer the case? Or was it just related to how long it takes, and it's just quicker if coming from outside Telstra.

  • Can anyone confirm if Boost can do a 3-way call while on wifi calling?

  • Better value to just get the Cashrewards deal?

Boost says 240gb after July 7. How is it known it'll be 300gb?

  • Just be warned if you travel over seas with Boost, they now block Wifi Calling . The Telstra system allows free calling when overseas back and to Australia at no extra cost WITHOUT a roaming pack but now Boost block wifi calling overseas you can't do this , (calling your voicemail is not blocked) and incoming SMS still seemed to work. So if you want to make calls or receive them when overseas you now need to buy an expensive roaming pack. OK for a few days but not for a month or 2. I've switched to More who still allow free wifi calling TO and FROM Australia when overseas without a roaming pack. It works and was so useful.

  • I got vodafone currently and i need to port to boost after getting the new sim , so should i buy the Vodafone $35 Sim Starter Pack as well along with this ?

    • As long as your Vodafone number is still active (it doesn't need credit to call out, it just needs to be able to receive an SMS on the number you want to port) you only need this Boost SIM. In sign-up process you put in your exiting number and it sends you an SMS for porting number confirmation.

If you are already on Boost, just grab a $2 Telstra sim (e.g. at Coles or various retailers), port number to Telstra (scrolling down to the bottom of options on Recharge section and choose no recharge) and then after that's active add the Telstra sim (so you can get the SMS to confirm the number) and then activate (port) back to Boost. I just did this today, only about 5 min for each to activate, and did straight from Telstra back to Boost, no issue. Also did a second number associated to me (I manage the wife's) at the same time, though had to wait a number of hours before Telstra would let me port another number to them (not sure how Telstra and Boost backends are setup, but it must have triggered a too many ports for a bit), but when it didn't error and transferred to Telstra for this second number I could continue with the process to get back to Boost.

      • Thanks

  • Just got a successful price beat at Officeworks. It took a few rounds of “can I speak to the manager” — eventually spoke to someone more senior and then the manager, who approved it. I just had to explain that SIM cards don’t have a product code, which is what they were trying to find on the competitor’s site.

Your experience may vary, and some stores might say no on the spot. If that happens, just email the head office with the competitor link — they’ll usually approve it the next day.
