Good price from a local distributor for the 9800X3D.

Better IMHO than gambling with an AliExpress or Amazon US CPU. I recently purchased one through Amazon US and I received a counterfeit CPU and had to waste my time returning it. Local store are generally more reliable and come with a proper warranty.

6 July: Another price drop from $819 to $809.
15 July: Down to $799 from $809.

        Runout sales on 9800x3d?!

        • +1

This. I want to know too.

    • +4

Where are you getting 9800X3D at $600?
On a quick look, the cheapest I've found on previous deals was $703.

      • +4

your not getting 9800 for that price anywhere, prob not even aliexpress

      • +2

Shopback had 10% cashback (capped at $50) at the time of that $703 AliExpress deal:

There was also this option via TopCashback US and AliExpress coming in at a reported $558 AUD + GST:

Noting concerns dealing with non-local supply.

        • +1

That first link was a very dubious looking seller IMO. Warnings of bent pins and stains on the CPU?! oh, and no warranty to boot. What a bargain.

          • +3

@vongole83: SZCPU is a legit seller, the bent pins is just a generic warning, they're all sealed in the plastic trays with tamper stickers. They also offer 1 year warranty as stated in the description.

          • +3

@vongole83: CPUs don't have pins any more, the motherboards do. So I am not sure what you are referring to.

            • +1

@trankillity: I know. Read the disclaimer on the link though. Hardly fills one with confidence.

    • +1

Brah $600? Press X for doubt

      • -4

Ok, then let's see. Even with $800. If this was AliExpress and the 20% cashback deal was on, plus a $20 coupon, plus the min spend discount of about $12, then $800 - $20 - $12 = $768, $768 * 0.80 = $614.4. Doubt? Lol.

        • +3

You forgot to add pricing error.. so $416?

  • +1

Curious about your experience with the counterfeit cpu. How did you tell? The packaging? Did you go as far as installing it to find out?

      • Lawdy. What's the goal with this fake cpu? It has no cpu in it so it's not like anyone is gonna be fooled. It will just be returned. Are they scamming the distributors themselves?

    • +8

Tamper seal was cut. CPU was AM5 but had no decoupling capicitors. I wasn't willing to try it out given the box was tampered. Maybe it would have worked but I was not willing to risk the rest of my rig when all signs were it was counterfeit.

  • +4

Sometimes your better off buying local and spending a few more bux to make sure your getting what you actually want…

There are fakes in so many items these days. If it sounds too good to be true….

  • +2

Yep the fear of blowing up my board or other components with a fake CPU keeps me away from the AliExpress vendors for sure. Not worth the risk to save $100 over a deal like this.
I already have a 7800X3D but have a use case for the extra power here so deals like this are tempting.

This was recently a bit cheaper at mwave with an EOFY coupon but this isn't a bad price for local stock from a trusted seller.

    • Have there been verified reports of a fake Aliexpress CPU?
From a store over 4 stars with 100+ reviews?

I've only heard of it from Amazon and Newegg scam returns incorrectly labeled as new.

    • +1

some people here dont seem to think so and will downvote everyone who says anything bad about their precious Ali Express deals

  • +5

I think with AliExpress as long as you stick with vendors (like szcpu etc) you will be fine. I’ve bought about 5 am5 CPU’s off there, no issue.

The issues I’ve had with Ali is when I’ve gone with the no name pop up shops - and in many recent cases, I’ve actually been able to secure a refund as I’ve been able to demonstrate the item was faulty.

I’d say the returns process has actually been superior to local in terms of turnaround..

    • +1

Yep those sellers are generally not any cheaper (or not much) than local anyway. Not worth a $20/50 saving when I can wait for a deal then go somewhere that has a physical store here in Melb.

Also very importantly you get no warranty if buying from a Chinese seller on Ali!!

Yeah no shot would I consider buying an expensive cpu off Aliexpress unless it was a deal posted here and a bunch of people confirmed it was a reputable seller (which is one of the best things about OzB, thanks nerds!)

  • It would be great if there's a 9900X deal for workstation/data science workload.

    • Why not Intel? 265k is cheaper and faster than the 9900X in multithreaded workloadsd

      • Because I already have a B650 mobo. Upgrading from a Ryzen 7700.

  • +3

My AliExpress gambles have always paid out.

  • I got mine from BHPhoto (US) at RRP - often out of stock so had to watch for a few days

    • If you were talking about back during release time, yeah I kept checking and was ready to buy from overseas, but then suddenly I checked Umart one day a couple of weeks after release and it was on their website in stock. I even called in to make sure they actually have stock, and they confirmed, bought it and it arrived next day.

  • +2

I got this a month ago. It's noticeably faster than the 12700K it replaced.

  • Does anybody know the MSRP of the 9800X3D in Australia?

    • $999.99

    • -1

799, the other reply to you is bullsh*t

$809 directly from Amazon AU now.

    • I used to trust Computer Alliance — not anymore.

I bought a brand new ASUS X570 motherboard from them for my Ryzen 5600X. As many of you probably know, the early X570 boards didn’t support Ryzen 5000 series CPUs out of the box — they required a BIOS update. Unfortunately, flashing the BIOS also required a compatible older CPU (like a Ryzen 3000), which I didn’t have.

So I called Computer Alliance to ask if they could help. They told me to send the board in. Everything seemed fine — the turnaround was fast. But when the package came back, something was off.

It wasn’t the same board I sent. I had recorded the serial number beforehand, and this one didn’t match. Worse still, it clearly wasn’t new. There were visible signs of it having been cleaned with PCB cleaning solution, and traces of solder flux left behind. I called them again to ask what happened.

      Their response?

“We found your board was faulty and replaced it. This one was tested overnight and confirmed working.”

I didn’t have much choice but to accept it at the time.

A few months later, the problems began.

Random USB disconnects while gaming. Devices cutting in and out. Then, eventually, two rear USB ports just died — unable to provide stable 5V power. Plugging into them could even cause a full GPU crash, resulting in a black screen. I confirmed this behavior with a USB testing device.

In the end, I had to seal off those ports and just put up with the board.

I've used plenty of ASUS boards over the years. Was this really the ASUS quality we’ve come to expect? Or was the board they sent me already compromised from the start? I don’t know for sure — but I do know that the board I sent in was brand new.

Now that I’m planning another upgrade, I just want to share this story.

Your experience may vary, but take this as a cautionary tale. Make your own judgment — and tread carefully.
