Replace Battery of 2 Year Old Pixel 7 for $200 or Trade It in for a Galaxy A56 for $350?

Hey ozbargainers, looking to get your opinion!

I have a 2 year old pixel 7 which I have recently replaced as a primary device. Now looking to use it as a secondary work phone.

The issue with it is that it's battery depletes quite fast, it needs to be plugged in at least once or twice to top up and last a day of use. I also get delayed notifications which is definitely annoying, being that it will be used for work. I'm not sure if this has to do with it's battery (possibly doze function?). Other than that, I'm happy with the phone as a secondary phone/workhorse.

I'm looking at either replacing the battery for $200 or trading it in at Telstra to get the galaxy A56 for $350. Also looking to see if there's any good sub $300 deals out there that might fit the bill.

It seems like on paper, it's an upgrade? For an extra $150, battery has larger capacity and faster charging, similarly performing CPU, better screen. It'll also be a fresh new phone with fresh components vs just a battery change for the pixel. Seems like it'll be a equally smooth user experience with better battery, I don't mind copping a worse camera.

What do you guys think? Thanks!

I don’t get it… you are asking if you should repair a 3+yo phone for possibly as much as its used value, or trade it in and get something for it towards a new phone?

It would help to know the trade in value of the phone and what offer they made you for it.

It sounds like if they offer you $150~ish for your phone, then you are in the same financial place as getting you phone repaired ($200 out of pocket) but are getting a brand new and more up to date phone.

    • Thanks for the input pegaxs! That's right, I'm looking to either send it in for battery replacement for $200 or trade it in +$ for a new phone.

Telstra trade in has offered $150. The A56 can be bought outright from them for $500 = $350 out of pocket if I trade. Battery replacement is $200, so I would pay $150 extra out of pocket in getting the brand new phone.

So basically $200 for a battery replaced older flagship phone vs $350 for brand new midrange phone. I'm debating if it's worth spending the extra $150 is worth getting new rather than keeping the Pixel running.

    • yeah
but Pixel is a top end phone which top notch cameras and Galaxy A series is only mid-range with ordinary cameras.

Surely OP can do a lot better than $200 for a battery change?

And are Pixel phones still terrible with battery performance?????

Or buy a battery and replace it yourself.

OMG, that video is so fake. They didnt show them heating the screen up to loosen the adhesive to remove it. And then they just pop the battery out? Like (fropanity) that would happen that easy. Didnt show them removing the screen adhesive or replacing it. This literally looked like a video that AI would produce. It was like watching one of those bullshit faked "5 min crafts" videos.

A better "how to" would be the one from the "I Fix It" site, where you get a much better idea on the steps required… I would not recommend a "DIY" battery replacement on many modern phones.

Lol are people that dumb they don't know to use a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive?

        • lol… pretty much.

Thanks Watchnerd, I did look into that a bit and honestly I don't know if I trust my repair skills to do it myself, which would be the biggest barrier to that. It would also cost around $85 for a kit, which is currently out of stock on iFixit.

Will look into researching a bit more but I think I'd rather just pay to replace the battery at this point, thank you for the input!

You don't need to spend that much though. I replaced my Samsung S20 FE battery a few months ago, bought from Aliexpress for approx $20. Just spent some time reading reviews & bought from a high selling store. It's working fine.

Here I will start you off, this one has sold 428 with 4.7 stars… US$12.17 + GST delivered.

        • Bookmarking this thanks. My s20 fe has about 74% battery health at the moment and I've been real indecisive on what to replace it with.. SD card support is a little rarer on flagship phones now

          • @skelty: No problems, battery is still performing great. Have no issue recommending it.

How do you know the percentage health? The S20 FE doesn't have this feature.

@WatchNerd: Been using accubattery. No idea how accurate but the phone ain't getting me through the day anymore haha

I bought an A56 to replace my aging A52 a couple of weeks ago. $450 new from Costco, delivered.

Nice phone and great to be using a healthy battery again. The A52's four year old battery was aging and would go flat from moderate use within 12 hours.

    • Wow went all out
