[eBook] Murderbot Diaries (14 Books) by Martha Wells $30.51 @ Humble Bundle

850

So this is a banger of a deal, these books have been historically very pricey for how short they are. One of the my favourite series of all time and I can't recommend it enough at 30$, I paid closed to retail for all of them and still would recommend it.

For context these books are normally like 16$+ AUD each and I have recommended borrowing them from libraries in the past because they are so pricey.

I would give it a solid 4.5/5 for the whole series. A rare book series which has great comedy writing.

For all my fantasy heads out there, I would say this is very "light" sci-fi and an easy read. Doesn't go too hard on the sci-fi elements.

If you have watched the show and enjoyed it I seriously recommend this, it's a step up from the show.

  • If you enjoy Murderbot and want a fresh, Australian take on robots, check out Letters to Our Robot Son - set around Sydney & the Blue Mountains.

  • Unpopular opinion, but the series was boring af. Hopefully the books are a lot better.

    • It was quite different to how I pictured the books.

Tv series had a slow start but slowly got better to the end.

      • Episodes were so short at around 20m eqch

        • Just like the best show in the universe - "Sanctuary Moon"

        • Yeah I was disappointed that each episodes were so short

    • You're right. That is an unpopular opinion.

    • 100% agree. It seemed to want to be a comedy but wasn't funny at all imo. Everyone has different tastes though, but this wasn't good comedy or good sci fi, it tried to be a bit of everything but wasn't great at anything. I have heard the books are good though…so maybe it will improve if it gets more seasons?

    • From someone who reads a lot of SF, the robot character turned me off, couldn't get past the first few chapters.

  • Haven't watched the TV show but have been a fan of the books for a long time. I bought all the hardback editions to support the author and hopefully encourage more Murderbot! Can highly recommend reading the series.

    • Wait, you're a huge fan of the books, but haven't even seen the show?

Come on bro, Apple TV+ is one of the better streaming services and there's been plenty of free trials and first month half-price type deals posted here.

Subscribing for long enough to watch the series is literally cheaper - at the normal price, not this deal - than buying just one of these ebooks 😂

  • Audiobook version is great too

    • Audiobooks are great! It took me a while to like Skarsgard in the TV show, because I was still wanting to hear the audiobook narrator.

  • How short are they? I listen to audio books but have not picked up a fiction on written format for a while.

    • First few are long novellas (if that’s a thing) - under 200 pages. Later ones are longer.

They are pretty easy reads but you will either enjoy or hate the tone; if you don’t like the first couple then don’t bother with the rest

      • The first is among the best imho, if you dislike it I’d probably just stop there. (I liked it though.)

    • Quite short; you might dig them.

  • And it comes with Witch King too?!

Witch King is one of the best high fantasy novels I've read in a very long time.

    • Nice, I'll add it to the list

  • I’ve read the books, then watched the show. In my mind the world was grubbier in the books. (More bladerunner aesthetic).

IMO in the tv show they could have made the hippies more likeable then we might care for them a bit more. I seriously wanted them all to get murdered as they annoyed me so much.

Having said that, David Dastmalchian was excellent. (So good in Dexter resurrection too).

    • The crew was annoying at the start, but they definitely grew on you as it went.

  • I read the first book, and I found it really puerile.

  • amazing books!

  • I know this is OzBargain but pricey?? Hard disagree.

This is just about values. You go to the movies, and pay at least 20$+ for a movie. Each of these books give you more than 3 hours of content.

I know ebook prices are ridiculous when compared to paper/hardback, but we need to value books more.

Yes, they are super pricey at 150 ish pages that's about 1 1/2 - 2 hours a book, they are about $18 a ebook (and that's cheaper then physical copies, they are normally more for Murderbot). That is worse value then my local movie theatre, which IMO is a terrible "value" for money comparison.

I love reading, I love supporting authors, I love this series, but these are way to expensive for how short they are, even the "bundles" that have been released after the success of the show are still too expensive.

Obviously not apples to apples here but every book of the Storm light archives are $15, hell you can even get the whole of "the first law" trilogy $22 on Amazon right now.

There is infinite great books that I recommend before this series because it's unreasonable to recommend when they are priced at non short story pricing. It's a hell of a library pickup or when it's on a killer deal like this.

      • I agree. I’ve been listening on Audible, and each book I’ve been having to wait for a sale. Because as good as they are I’m not sore sing a whole credit on a 3 hour book.

      • This. It's about how much entertainment-per-dollar you get compared to as-good-or-better series that cost half as much per book, and 1/10th as much per page.

Excited to finally finish this series, though.

      • I have friends who are writers and artists, and I love books. So I don't think of books in terms of page for quality/money.

  • Just created an ozBargain account to say THANK YOU, @Jofzar! (long-time lurker)

Loved the first book and have been waiting to buy the rest of the series (on sale)! :D

    • Same, read one book, realised it was double the price (and a quarter the length!) of all the other GOAT sci-fi series on my reading list, and have been reading those instead.

      Glad I waited.

  • how are these books delivered? are they a epub or kobo key or something?

  • Damn had me excited for a second there thinking I must have missed there being double the amount of Murderbot books than I had read

    • Martha trying to beat Brandon at his own game by releasing 7 secret projects.

    • Note this includes two of the three short stories (Home, set after book 4 and Rapport, set after book 2, released this year) but not Compulsory (set before the series, published online in Wired https://www.wired.com/story/future-of-work-compulsory-martha…).

  • Premium Quality Entertainment

  • loved the TV series, certainly not main stream scifi, but loved the introspective / dark humour.
yeah, had a bunch of cliche and would never be of red dwarf quality, but i'd put it up there with the Oriville , can't wait for season 2

  • I have been waiting for a price drop on these for quite some time. Many thanks to Jofzar and OzBargain for this posting.

  • Hi all, while this was due to expire yesterday, it has been extended for another seven days so is still available!

This is excellent value for Murderbot alone, but you also get the author's fantasy and YA works. I enjoyed Witch King, and I'm sure the rest are good too.

Between the individual ebooks, hard covers and audiobook bundle, this was the fourth time I've bought some of these 😀
