I just got the 7800x3D for $629 and super happy with it but this is a great price if you are building now. I'm quite jealous for not holding out!

    • +1

Same, but got mine from centercom for $595

7800x3d is probably too much CPU for me anyway

      • -3

These prices are both crazy, I paid $448.53 from AliExpress back in Jun, and that came with another $25 of CashRewards cashback - so total price of about $425 🤷

        • +1

          Okay

        • -1

So did i, but we ran the risk of getting a dud if not a fake CPU, verse we get warranty here and ali express aint got shiet. Pro's and Cons.

  • wrong maths
should be $645.67 after -$120 coupon if add another $155 item

    • +5

      Did you use the code?

I was looking at Mwave's catalogue of AM5 motherboards to pair with this and realised you have to go so far up the price ladder if you want PCIE 5 to make the build more future resistant with future GPU upgrades.

You can get a crappy bottom end last gen b620m or a650m for around $150 with PCIE 4, otherwise you have to go almost all the way to $300 for a board with PCIE 5.
I'm not sure if that premium is worth it.

The 9800x3d will probably sell out before I figure out what I want to do.

      • +2

Pretty sure scale was looking specifically at Mwave to try and get the bigger discount.

    • +3

No need for pcie5 unless you plan on getting a 5090 or top end 6xxx at launch.

Something like this would be perfectly fine for the 9800x3d right now paired with anything from a 5080 down

      https://www.mwave.com.au/product/gigabyte-b650m-gaming-plus-…

Here’s the cpu support list, 9800x3d is listed as supported.

~$300 for B850 is the sweet spot I reckon.

      • Better VRM setup. Some motherboards even throttle the CPU from stock with bad VRMs. VRM temp data for all the B850 motherboards. Longer life + 5% extra overclock is worth $50-$100 alone.
      • No need to update BIOS to support 9 series, and probably supported longer than B650.
      • Guaranteed PCIE 5 support. Doesn't matter much IMO, but another reason over the B650 equivalent.

Personally I went with the Gigabyte B850 Gaming X Wifi6E. I would never trust Asrock, as even before this latest exploding 9 series chips thing, they've been dodgy for many years.

For B650, it seems ~$230 is what you should expect to pay for a decent board. The MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI for $188 passes the VRM test, but if you google it seems to have issues.

MSI X670E Gaming Plus WiFi $356

        • +1

I found this specs comparison spreadsheet helpful during my research

So for that one, its $50 more for 4 extra USB ports, 1 extra M2 slot, and pretty much identical otherwise

I was considering the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX V2 for this reason over the B850 Gaming X, as they are both $300, but they took away PCIE5 in a recent BIOS update and not having 9 series support out of the box might have been problematic

The X870 boards aren't worth it, because any under ~$450 all have the same ALC897 audio and VRM setups

      • +2

I was tossing up between that Gigabyte and a similarly spec'd MSI one. Ended up going with MSI due to having some extra features like 5Gbps LAN and Wifi 7.

Not really game changers but they were both the same price so.

        • Can I ask what the MSI model was that you ended up going with? I hope not to need the wifi, but if I do i'd prefer to go with 7.

          • @Arsenal: It was the MSI B850 GAMING PLUS WIFI. There's also the B850-P WIFI which is basically the same board minus the gaming logos/branding and with a HDMI out instead of DP.

            • @dqtl74: Ah cheers. Was after m-atx though, so went with the MSI PRO B850M-A Wifi someone else mentioned. Hopefully it is also good.

      • Just wanted to say thank you for the links to that video as well as the spreadsheet you linked below as well mate you've made it easy to shop around for a good mobo avoiding the crap ones and not spending for the ones that don't offer much but a name and rgb. Especially for avoiding Asrock as well.

I'm really liking your pick of the Gigabyte Gaming X and I also like the MSI PRO B850M-A Wifi due to its extra usb-c port. Both seem to offer good vrm cooling and have great features.

Currently waiting for hardware unboxed to release his part 2 video to the b850 series to see if there's any stand outs I should pick up for my next build.
Need that gen5 as I'm going to pick up a 9070xt for now but will likely upgrade if the supers and new amd offerings impress me.

        Cheers!

    • I got an x670e for cheap which i am happy with although it looks like they have stopped manufacturing them

    • if you want PCIE 5 to make the build more future resistant with future GPU upgrades

PCIe 5.0 doesn't matter today, no GPUs make use of it, and storage is barely saturating PCIe 4.0.

Principle is that you should buy for today, not for some far-off future upgrade based on technology that is not even announced or released yet.

9800X3D is a very efficient CPU, if you're on a budget, I'd just suggest pairing it with a mid-range B650 board which you can get for between $150-200, you might even be able to sneak in a B850 board, which will give you that PCIe 5.0.

Spend your change on more RAM, more storage, a nicer case…etc.

    • if you want PCIE 5 to make the build more future resistant with future GPU upgrades.

Why would you care about something completely irrelevant for 99.99 % of the population?

      • That's what I thought when I paired a B350 motherboard with a PCIe 3 slot with a PCIe 4 capable 5600xt.

Now I've realised that it restricts you to future GPU upgrades that have 16 lanes, since an 8 lane PCIe 4 GPU would be running at ~25% of the bandwidth it would expect if plugged into a PCIe 3 slot.

It wouldn't translate to anywhere near 25% of the performance, since most GPUs don't currently saturate PCIe 4, but it's still a limitation.

There's only so much that things like resizable BAR can do to mitigate that.

        • Brother you're talking non sense. You really do not need PCIe 5, not now, not in 5 years.

          • @adehmar: Repeating the same argument without providing any substance to it does not make it stronger.

I just gave you an example of how having a motherboard with PCIe 3 seemed okay at the time, but it is increasingly no longer the case with more GPUs being capable of (and expecting) PCIe 4 and 5, with lower end ones making do with only 8 lanes.

Is this what we really need to spend to game today?

    I was going to pair a 9600x with a 9070xt.

Are cpus like the 9600x already obsolete and we all need x3d chips?

    • +13

No, this is top end. Literally the best gaming CPU money can buy right now.

    • +2

      https://youtu.be/AR9V8RTvVcM?si=mUiKA9BCYhz9Kh6Y

      You're fine. Get the 9600x.

Or a 7700 from aliexpress when those go on sale. Same same.

    • I recently went from 8th gen Intel + 1080ti to a 7600x + 7800xt and it's great! Mind you, I only play Sim racing games now but I don't think you'll be unhappy with that combo.

    • +2

7700 non x from Aliexpress is the way. Unless you want 400fps at 1080p. Then go x3d

    • +1

Is this what we really need to spend to game today? I was going to pair a 9600x with a 9070xt.

How long is a piece of string - you can get from A to B with a 1990 Corolla Seca for $2,000, or a Ferrari.

I was putting together a PC for my kid from some old parts I had lying around - ended up being a i5 10400F + GTX 1070, and it's still offering a great gaming experience today. You could build something similar for like $500 on Marketplace.

Are cpus like the 9600x already obsolete and we all need x3d chips?

      What makes you say that?

If anything, progress in the PC gaming space has been really slow for many years now. We've reached the far-end of diminishing returns on technology since the early 2010s IMO. Not sure how long you've been around, but the days of 50-100% generational leaps in performance are over. I still remember back in the day, with every generation, it just obsoleted whatever you had previously - going from a GeForce 256 to GeForce 2 back in 2000 was a genuinely different experience.

    • You can do perfectly fine with a 5600x and a 6700XT on 1080p and a lot of games on 1440p. You don't need the best.

  • Can anyone recommend mobos for this? I usually go asrock pro rs or steel legend

    • +4

asrock will fry your cpu, 5 motherboard bios updates and still being a noticeable failure rate compared to other manufactures - ego too big to show they (profanity) up this gen.

      i['d get a tomahawk 850

    • +6

Asus TUF boards have been rock solid for my brothers builds (B550 now B650). I've had an MSI b450i gaming max, and a b450i asus - no issues on either. Currently on a gigabyte b850i - also solid!

I'd honestly say, pick your budget, look for mid-range boards with decent VRM solutions (8+phases, you really don't need to go crazy here), and whatever IO you need.

IMO Micro ATX provides best bang/buck/size utilisation but that depends on your case/if youre building brand new.. For me, ITX all the way, but Micro ATX + Lian Li A3 is a sweet combo too, lots of room, but also compact.

Time to upgrade the 3700x lol.

  • Well poop… Bought mine last week for 739 at centrecom… Looked like it was the historical low at the time

    • I've had it in my cart at mwave for 3 days and was the best price I could find. Do you know anywhere comparable priced, ideally need the CPU over the next 2 months but I guess if AliExpress or somewhere can do it better?

  • Wow out of stock already :(

    • Yeah I went down a rabbit hole trying to find a mb or ram to go with it. Took too long :(

    • Have had it in my mwave cart the last 3 days, going to be a well overdue upgrade for my PC. Just trying to work out a board for it as I think I need 6 sata ports still.

Edit: Okay, out of stock now but says the code is valid until 13 October. Hopefully they will be able to restock before then as I really need it for this price.
The sale price for the 9800X3D has also been removed from mwave site so it would need back in stock + sale price priced re-applied before sale ends, maybe i'm screwed?

The 7800X3D is also on sale and is within 5% of the 9800X3D for most things.

      • I think PCIe SATA cards is our future

Pulled the trigger last night on this and a set of RAM. $790 all up. Been eyeing a new build since a couple of my friends have gotten new PCs recently and I was green with envy.

Why do I always make these impulse purchases late at night haha.

    • Good move!! haha

  • Anyone know where to get this CPU sub-$700 within next 2 months? Was pretty set on it since it was around $50 more than the 7800X3D but now checking the productivity benchmarks the 7800X3D is quite far behind 9800X3D. Cheapest price on staticice right now is $729 which is a massive jump from 7800X3D. Best I can see on eBay is around $760.

    • AliExpress + cashback?

I'm waiting for the next 20% TCB US cashback offer to pop up then I'm pulling the trigger on a 9800X3D. Should come up to mid $500s AUD if cashback tracks correctly.

I've been doing my research and asking around and seems like there shouldn't be an issue; the uncapped 20% is big enough that it's worth the risk over the $30 capped 15% cashback from TCB AU.

    • +5

@Agret jump on it mate they’re back in stock

      • +2

Thanks mate got ya tag, new CPU on the way 😁

    • now checking the productivity benchmarks the 7800X3D is quite far behind 9800X3D

Might as well just get a 9950X3D if you care about productivity. (https://www.mwave.com.au/product/amd-ryzen-9-9950x3d-16-core… with CODECHELLA120 for $949)

The extra $270 or so is probably < 10% of the total system build and you'll get significantly better (~double) the productivity performance.

    • +1

Sweet thanks, ordered one + a corsair nautilis water cooler. Why does everything have to have RGB nonsense these days!?!

  • I have a 5070TI and a 5700x3d. Is it worth upgrading? I assume it would be another $1200 in the hole to get everything.

    • Upgrading the CPU with that GPU? What’s your use case?

    • +2

Depends on how GPU/CPU bound your are gaming… Since you have an X3D chip already you'd have to be really wanting those high frame rates in competitive titles to need the change… If your a 1440p/4K Ultra type gamer it's unlikely you'll see much difference.

Also depending on your risk tolerance there is always Ali express X3Ds when they have sales. Mine cost me around $460 including a MB ($400 - $50 cash back and an iTX board for $140 minus cash back and store credit from the CPU purchase via affiliate thingy, however i do not recommend getting an Ali express MB unless you've been messing with computers for a long long time and know your stuff, since my build is itx I couldn't justify the board prices and the board I got does all I need ) The ram I got via Amazon but centercom and others have Klevv ram which has good prices for speeds (32gig CL30 6000 is about $140-50)… If you get the CPU via Ali express you can probably get the MB N RAM locally and it'll most likely cost only a bit more than this CPU alone. Again this is dependent on your comfort with getting the tray CPU's from China. Mine turned out ok and so have many others here on OzB.

      • Is this RAM good? I don't know anything about DDR5 but it's 96GB CL36 6000MHz $379 (might get the same ram without the RGB for $10 less)
        https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0F7RVMYZQ

Was thinking 2x 48GB would be a good choice since DDR5 can be unstable when running 4 dimms

        • I guess it depends, I assume you need the capacity which is what your mostly paying for with this kit and yes I'd stick to two dimms, brand is good, 6000mhz is the sweet spot for AMD AM5, CL30 is the 'preferred' timing speed but it's unlikely anyone will see the difference vs CL36 for the ram in the link, and also RAM speeds matter even less with a X3D CPU.

Can't comment on the price as I only needed 32gig so only researched 32gig kits… So if that's a good price and you need the capacity then can't see any issues with that kit.

          • @scud70: I think the $369 at Amazon is pretty good (for the non RGB one), Centrecom have it at $469
            https://www.centrecom.com.au/corsair-vengeance-96gb-2-x-48gb…

Looking at CL30 kits the price doubles from CL36, is there much real world difference?

            • @Agret: $100 is a big price difference so definitely a good deal vs centercom. Absolutely not worth the price difference for CL30 kit, very unlikely you'll see a noticeable difference between them. I got a CL30 kit for mine because it was cheaper than the alternative brand CL36 versions otherwise I'd just gotten that.

              • @scud70: I found same RAM is cheaper buying from Amazon Japan as they have a prime deal going right now, usual Amazon BS where it's cheaper than buying something we already have local.

                https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0F7RWR21G

What's crazy is they had the option to buy a second hand one on this so I got that, was only $266.42 for the second hand one and says it will arrive Monday so I guess that was in our local warehouse. Fingers crossed nothing wrong with the second hand one.

                • +1

@Agret: Haha good find fingers crossed no issues, if it works straight away just do some extended mem test runs on just to make sure , yes my kit was from Amazon UK which was cheaper than local… I have no idea how the economy of it all works with Amazon 🤷

    • Unless you're playing competitive titles at like 300+ fps, not worth it at all.

For most graphically intensive games at 1440p or 4K, there will be almost no difference between the 5700X3D vs. the 9800X3D.

      (e.g. see: https://www.techspot.com/review/2692-ryzen-7800x3d-vs-ryzen-…)

7800X3D vs. 5800X3D, but similar extrapolations can be made - the 7800X3D is ~4% faster than the 5800X3D at 4K. If you have an urge to spend $1,200, I'd suggest upgrading your monitor.

    • Absolutely not. Wait for next gen.

  • Is this RAM compatible with the 9800X3D?
And is 32GB enough for gaming, mainly BATTLEFIELD 6.
