Am interested in getting a wheel but not $300 interested as I just don’t know how much use I’d get out of it. Is there anything anyone knows like $100-150?

    • Same question for me as well

      • +4

The answer is you have got to be joking. $270 is cheap as for a FF wheel and anything not FF is not even worth trying. (That said the skies the limit with wheels personally I would only ever get a DD wheel having had both)

You want cheaper, get one used.

        • +1

he's outta line, but he's right. Under $300 is going to be super tough to get something, unless you get some really mediocre or atrocious wheel. Having said that, by todays standard, the G29 and G920 are pretty mediocre as it is, but they offer proper force feedback (not just rumbling motors like a gamepad, which some cheaper wheels do, so be careful)

Used is defo a good option, many people have Logitech G29 / 920 / G923, then want to upgrade to something decent or they get over it.

To get brand new kit, you need to keep an eye out for some killer deals to get anything under $300.

          • +1

@Aus Falcon: I wasnt tryign to be mean - I mean that asking for a decent wheel for $100-$150 new is absurd.

the G29 is fine for most people though imo, yes DD is much better but you will only really notice it if you go from one to the other. Getting a G29 is still leagues above not having a FF wheel

    • +11

Happy to be corrected but I think the general consensus is that at that price point you're better off looking for a second hand G29 / G920 than buying new.

      • +1

That’s about right, anything below this tier just won’t give you the effect you’re looking for…

      • +2

        True.

Source - I've been selling my RARELY used racing wheels over the past 20 years. Every generation I think I'm going to use it more. I don't.

        • -1

I think it comes down to finding a game you enjoy. I originally bought a wheel for Project Cars 2, but I just didn't enjoy that game. I eventually got Forza Horizon 5 and had an absolute blast.

          • @AdrianW: I recently got a wheel and jumped straight into iRacing. Unbelievably realistic control, I'm already addicted.

            • +4

@Hentendo: If you are a regular player, do yourself a favour get a DD wheel.

              And a sim cockpit

              and a buttkicker

              and vr

              and a motion sim

    • +4

2nd hand is the way to go. Do not buy those brand new wheels in the $100-150 price range. They don't have force feedback.

    • +2

Yes! Go with a 14 year old Logitech Driving Force GT. You'll find one between $50-$80 on Facebook marketplace or gumtree.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMY5Uq7tS-A

I got it at the advice of a mate just before I was gonna buy a new wheel and it's been a great cheap way to try sim racing. Couple it with asseto corsa when it's on a $15 sale and you're laughing.

I haven't felt the need to upgrade the wheel it does that good of a job. If I really had more timing gaming, maybe I'd upgrade.

Plenty of YouTube experts say as long as the wheel was decent quality, a more expensive wheels not going to make drivers any faster or better.

      • +1

I wouldn't go for a Driving Force GT, the minimum you want is a G29 or G920 or preferably a G923.

        • +3

Up to the buyer. It's worked out well for me and many others. Works fine on Win11 with Core Isolation turned off. I spent $50 and for that, it's a bargain way to 'race'.

Clearly the newer wheels are probably nicer but of course it's all relative to what people what to spend. I wanted to try 'sim racing' and $50 seemed right. I don't get time to game these days so feel it's a good price to pay for occasional use.

People say the peddles of the direct drive GT is its biggest letdown, however it's done the job good enough for me.

        • +2

I have a Driving Force GT I've owned it for like 10yrs, still works great. I like rfactor2, race driver grid, race 07, Dirt 2

The simbin bundles are on sale right now
          https://store.steampowered.com/app/8600/RACE_07/

Race 07 has tons of mods you can download, I recommend the Mazda MX5, Nissan 370z and Bathurst track mods you can find them on Google.

Need For Speed Shift (the original) is fantastic with this handling mod, complete game changer for playing with a wheel.

          https://archive.org/download/nfscars.net.2021/nfscars.net.20…
For some reason this file ends in .zip even though it's a .rar - rename it and it will open

          Makes the campaign really good.

        • Nothing wrong with a Driving Force GT apart from the pedals being a bit flimsy. I just got a new PC and dug my Driving Force GT out of the cupboard where it's been for 10 years and it's still going great. Force feedback is solid.

      • Interesting. Thanks for that. I was thinking of using it with Forza horizon 5 on pc but I’ve heard good things about asseto corsa

        • +1

Yeh it's much more realistic and simulation than arcade. Mods make it even better. Watch some YouTube on Assetto Corsa Content Manager and custom shaders patch. People with high end graphics cars get some amazing results from it. And for those like me on a 3060 card, I still looks good enough with a decent frame rate (my 3060 is paying a 49' widescreen)

          • @He-Mania: Sounds good. I have a 1070 though 💀 would that be enough?

            • @JacobAU: Should be fine, just gotta ease down a few settings. I'd say cpu and ram is more of the contributing factor

            • @JacobAU: if it has 8GB vram, it will do at lower res/settintgs, but that card is really old as in a decade. Might be time to upgrade your rig.

          • @He-Mania: I have a 3070 in my sim rig on my 49" - my main gaming pc is a 7900 XTX and at present I dont see the need to upgrade teh sim rig

        • +1

Don't undersell FH5. A blast to play on wheel. (But can be a pain to get tuned in to get the experience sorted).

    • +1

No. This is pretty much the minimum for anything more than a Timezone arcade experience. They're well built, sturdy and typically maintain their value so if you realise in a year you aren't using it you might be able to get out with a $100 loss.

    • Buy used from fb marketplace, i picked one up for $150, several selling for $200

    • You can keep an eye out for used. I picked up a free g29 off Facebook marketplace that was missing pedals to give to a friend. Unfortunately a lot of people sell these used for ~220-250. If you're using PC you might be able to get away with a used G25 for $150. The tech hasn't changed a lot but might have some comparability issues. Overall this is a pretty good price for new. You could always buy it and sell it used for a similar price if you dont use it.

    • +1

This is a hobby that almost everyone wants to try. But for a good chunk is a bit too tedious (myself included). So, you might be able to find one on marketplace for a decent amount.. i got one used for $220 with a shifter.. it was in absolutely pristine condition.. have i gotten $220 worth of use out of it? No!. Would I have regretted paying $300+? Yes.

  • +1

Check the marketplace, you better 101% sure you won't let it collect dust after couple times of use. Otherwise just waste money and time.

    • -1

That’s what’s put me off getting one. Much easier to just whip out an Xbox controller..

      • +1

I bought a G920 years ago, and it rarely came out of its box. That was until I got a game I actually enjoyed, Forza Horizon 5, which I've played almost daily since release. And now I play The Crew Motorfest daily as well. My current wheel is always attached to my desk now.

I've tried the more hardcore sims like Assetto Corsa and Automobilista 2, but I always end up playing the simcade games like FH5 and TCM as they're just so much more fun, at least for me.

        • It's interesting because FH series is primarily designed for gamepads and a lot of people use them. I'm so glad you actually use your rig for these games and it makes you happy. ☺️

        • -1

Yeah I love just driving around in FH5 so that would be the appeal for me. Just $300 is so expensive I just cant justify anything over $150. If i can somehow get a wheel and pedals for under $150 i'll make it happen.

      • Hence why I spend $50 on the above mention DFGT

  • I recently grabbed one from Hard Rubbish…works fine.

Now to find something decent to play it on…with old laptop (old i5 Mac with built in GeForce video). Bootcamp window 7 and 10.

It ran COD Ghost Recon 2 back in the day. Hopefully it will work

Looks like Asseto Corsa, Rally Sim Fans Richard Burns Rally and R Factor (2 maybe) are the go.

Anything else will be too graphic demanding I think..and I want to keep the investment at $0.

Made an awesome little collapsible rig for it out of scrapped pallets.

Painted, then printed Haas livery 'stuff' on it.

Pivots at the front (Buggle screws), so it folds flat.

      My Gunther 'Shrine'r ….

Anyone got recommendations for sim games that work on old hardware..send em on.

      • The Simbin Mega Bundle is great if you want proper sims.

    • Race 07 has a great handling model and should run okay on your laptop
      https://store.steampowered.com/app/8600/RACE_07/

Dirt 2 is also a fun rally game although a little arcadey it's fun on a race wheel. Unfortunately not for sale anymore but you can probably find a download for it somewhere.

  • +1

You can get these with a bit of effort from marketplace in decent condition for about $150 - as others have said good to trial to see if you'll actually use it. Now I'm looking at getting my father in law to fabricate a metal rig / stand and can pull it up infront of the new TCL TV!

    • +1

Dot get someone to fabricate unless the materials are free - join facebook for buy/sell sim stuff you should be able to get a rig fairly cheap.

  • +2

keep in mind these are now quite old, but they would still do the job, considering i'm using a g27 which still works fine.

Logitech has two recent wheel lines:
The entry-level Logitech G923 (a 2020 upgrade to the G29/G920) and the professional-grade Logitech G Pro Racing Wheel (a 2023 release for high-end direct drive performance).

However, their newest product line is the Logitech Racing Series (RS), announced in September 2025, which includes the RS50 Wheelbase offering direct-drive technology and Trueforce feedback, positioned above the G923 but below the Pro Wheel.

    • +2

afaik the G923 is pretty much the same as the G29.

That said, Direct Drive is much better.

  • +1

I have the G920 (Xbox/PC version), with the optional manual shifter.
Have it mounted to a foldaway steering wheel frame (Ebay, about $150). You place it in front of whatever chair/sofa you have and away you go. Doesn't take up too much space.

Has received solid use over the last 4 years (from both kids and myself).

I know it's not 'direct drive' and purists shun it as not being 'realistic', but it works great, no complaints. The whole set up (wheel, pedals, shift, frame) cost about $600 all up delivered.
    Plenty.

  • +1

The newer 923 at under 400 is pretty good as well!

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/114571379063

  • +1

Picked up a 923 wheel in an op shop for $50 once - how the hell do I get pedals only for it though?

    • Next to impossible unfortunately. I looked for months for replacement pedals. Unless someone else knows how? You can otherwise get USB pedals and connect them to the PC. If you're console you're out of luck though without official pedals. Pedals might also work from G25, G27, G29 but only if you can find them. (G920 are compatible but different/annoying with the hard brake piece).

Not surprise the superior PS version sold out.
Good to see satanic$oft and their shitbox losing their fanbase.
