              @RPS13: Yah went to go visit family last week for the first time since pre-COVID - Oh my gosh what an eye opener. The amount of tourists is too much. Every restaurant in every city seems to be packed. The trains are non-stop sardine tins no matter when you take them and all the "hole-in-the-wall" bars I used to enjoy now have lines. Fortunately, I was out in a country town while visiting where it was relatively untouched but when I'd go in for a night out, I did not enjoy it at all.

          Was there NYE. Been there 8 times. Only enjoyable areas are places you wont hear on reels. Small pockets left that haven't been ruined by over tourism. I'd suggest go philipines instead

          dam i went last year an enjoyed it and thought it was cheap. was my first time so im not sure what people are comparing it too, yes there are tourists around but they're in places you'd expect like temples, markets, major shopping malls etc. i went to plenty of restaurants that weren't packed with tourists but i stayed in a not-so-touristy part of Bangkok so maybe different to other people?

          idk man its like going to rome and complaining about tourists at the trevi fountain like what do u expect. Patong was absolutely just a tourist trap, so i get if people are talking about that.

          Depends on where you go I guess. Bangkok and Phuket don't seem any different from Pre-COVID with the exception of a heap of more Russians there. Chiang Mai has changed completely though

      Yep. Can easily ruin your holiday and plans. Absolute pain to try get your money back as well. An extra $200-500 is worth it to not have any headaches, even as a budget traveler myself.

        I think they're referring that the flights might be cancelled…

        So you've planned ahead and booked hotels etc, the hotels might be non-cancellable for good rates - and then boom, your flight gets cancelled and all your hotel bookings basically go into the bin.

        Could happen with any airline, but I think everyone has been stung by Jetstar. My Qantas flight was delayed by over 12 hours last time…

            @Ozbm: From first hand experience I never ever ever would fly with Jetstar again after having 3 flights cancelled over different months causing havoc with our holidays & lost days also lost money with stays that we couldn't claim on insurance etc beyond a nightmare even if they offered free flights I'd never go near them .

        Jetstar often uses same aircraft in very small layover times putting more pressure ground staff to perform routine maintenance. One delayed flight cause other connecting flights to be delayed. In last three months I used Jetstar 5 times to go east Asia. Three times delayed (2 hrs +) and once canclled. With cancallation they give me money back for uber and dinner that night.
        Thing is, even this poor service I still fly with them bacause just how cheap the flights are

        Japan is an exception with Jetstar. Since they need the planes to operate Jetstar Japan which is a different company and not shit.

          Jetstar 787s operate solely for Jetstar Australia, Jetstar Japan does not operate any 787s.

      Yep. I recently went to Korea with Jetstar and they canceled my connecting flight from KL to Aus on the way home. They put me on a replacement flight TWO full days later. My only options were to take it, or get a refund, but the refund was only partial and was worth less than half the cost of buying a replacement flight back the same day.

      They also refuse to tell you what you're entitled to claim during your delay. We kept our costs down and they did reimburse us, but it was annoying not knowing how much we were allowed to claim. Again they didn't assist at all in this process, we only got anything because we made it happen.

        I didn't get any reimbursement on our cancelled flight years ago despite I followed up. Jetstar cited their t&c for their rejection.

        What exactly did they reimburse for you costs?

        What did you say to them so they budged?

          When my flight was cancelled (or rather, forcibly rescheduled by them) I went to the service desk to find out what my options were, and that's when I got the choice for pathetic partial refund or the rebooking. They covered accommodation and taxis. Initially they only provided one night, but when we checked into the hotel they were like "that's not enough, we'll make them book a second" and dealt with it for us.

          We only received about $30 credit for meals at the hotel per night, which doesn't even cover entrance to the breakfast buffet, so I kept receipts for all additional meals and our laundry costs. Was only $100 or so, I submitted this as a reimbursement request and they paid it. They never revealed what my limit or entitlement was.

          I did ask them if they could upgrade me to business class or something to compensate for the inconvenience, this made the lady at the desk very angry, she said "you're getting free hotels, that IS compensation!!" as if two wasted days means nothing.

        Edit: I see samples added (dont think they were there initially?)
        Some very low prices. Better than what I booked back in July for next year. But we are flying into city and out another, so when you add in the extra travel costs to get back to the original City of entry the pricing still looks good for me.

      It will be in the negatives temperature wise.
      Most people go during March-August, especially if you want to see the cherry blossoms.

        March August is a huge range for cherry blossoms, you generally look at late March to mid April.
        July & August is Japan is difficult, super hot & humid

        I've flow to japan for 4 times on free return. lowest i paid was $310 return and the most was $424. The cheapest combo i can find for this sale is $720. and thats from cairns.. what do you mean?

      depends on what you want. Japan is very busy now with tourists and Korea is slowly catching up as the next new thing.

      Having done both multiple times recently (flights are about $50 often, max $100 from Tokyo/Osaka so you could do both in one trip) - Korea has a good charm, but do be aware the people can be a bit more openly unfriendly to foreigners vs Japan (which is more backhanded, in private).

      Hell hath no fury like a Korean grandma minorly inconvenienced. Even when they mean well, they'll openly tell you bossily that you're doing something wrong, breaking a rule etc (whereas Japanese would go about it a way that would avoid embarrassment).

      Additionally, while Japan is probably the best country for solo travellers, Korea is not really set up for it. Good luck finding anywhere to eat that doesn't have a 4 person minimum. They also mostly don't do bars in the sense we'd understand, drinking and socialising is done within your group at BBQ 'Pochas', so you don't really get the local socialising you might do at an Izakaya in Japan.

      Tokyo hands down.

      I went to Seoul and it was… Pretty bad. Literally got text messages from government to stay inside as the air was too polluted to go out.

      The city and culture seems really over rated.

      Japan is pretty great in comparison and much easier to get around.

    I'd look into this except I'm not likely to fly with an Australian carrier to Japan again. Virgin, Jetstar, Qantas - all are pretty awful these days

    I've flown this route 4 times return now with Jetstar and find it really good.

    Pretty comfortable flight and staff are wonderful. Food is decent too. The departure gates are a bit bleh but other than that it's great value for money.

    Direct flights are good. Be careful with transfering via Cairns or Brisbane from Syd/Mel as they might change the schedule so the first leg has to be one day prior to the international leg.
    This happened to me this year - I orginally booked ticket from Mel - Cairns - Tokyo last year. Then the Carins to Tokyo flight changed schedule to depart one hour earlier causing that it is no longering allowing my 6am Mel-Cains flight to be the first leg. I had to change the flight from Mel to Cairns to be one day prior, and had to book a hotel in Cairns.

    Checked the flights earlier in the day was 374 checked it again when I got home from work 534.

    It seems cheaper to just buy two one way tickets now for 209 to Korea but I'm worried it I buy a one way ticket they will just jack up the price on whatever return date is selected.

      If it’s $534 to Seoul and you need to pay extra for luggages, then Tway might be a better choice. Tway’s fare is usually around $700–800 return, except on very popular travel dates. The fare includes 30 kg of checked luggage and one in-flight meal. The biggest advantage is that they have baggage drop-off facilities at Incheon, so you don’t need to queue for 1.5 hours to drop your bag like you do with Jetstar. Another benefit is that their flights almost always arrive at the main terminal building, meaning it’s a shorter walk to border control and customs clearance. (I’ve actually flown with them five times, and twice the plane parked right next to the border control area, so there was literally no walk at all.)
