My 4 slice cost me about $40 12 years ago. It died 2-3 years ago. I miss it.

    • +7

      My condolences. :(

    • +3

      I miss it.

That's sad you haven't had toast for 2-3 years. I've got a spare one I could send you. Or you could buy two 2 slice toasters at Kmart for $15.00.

      • +2

The 15$ kmart toaster is still going strong after 5 years. I dont think that model is there anymore.

        • I got a 'cheapy 4 slice oem Big W, no name' branded one, a few years ago, for $20 on special, from $40, a few years ago.

It toasted one side quite well, and when flipping it at about 3 mins, resulted in toast, that is good/passable/great.

I now have 2 in storage…. because it was the best toaster in 10 years… even though it requires a flip and twist 3/4 of the way thru.

Compared to the $70 breville (at the time), it replaced. It performed basically the same, albeit with the same, bulls*it… but required… flip and rotate., at 3/4 way… to to cook properly.

The big w oem toaster, was, and still is… the best toaster we have bought in the last 15 years, and even though it's still sh*t… (compared to old school toasters that worked properly), it still toasts properly enough with a twist and flip, that it's 'good enough'. It also hasn't died fully, even though one of the "push down's" broke for about a month (til I slammed it enough til it worked properly again, lol).

          …..

If only some company made a toaster with electronic button controls, such that you can just (say), press a '1 min' twice, and '10 sec' 3 times (or something), similar to pressing +1 min on a microwave (which ppl tend to +1min press, twice or three times, to get 2-3 mins, and then stop somewhere between 2-3 mins).

*(and yeah, lol, a microwave could use a +10secs button, similar to the +1 min button , which would make it f'ing awesome!…)

Or have a few presets for the various 'toasting objectives', such that you press 'S1' (the 'save 1' setting (of 6 or so presets)), and '3m20s' comes up on a display, and then you can see exactly how long to go for the toast, instead of wondering if it has 50s to go or 20s to go……. when it's 2 mins through…….. because that would be a useful feature……..

"But, it might cost twice as much!"

          ….

But, it also might also work properly…

You know, like an improvement on an actual working toaster, from the old days…. Instead of these 1 side toasting pieces of crap, that break within 1-3 years……..

(the initial big w oem toaster is still going after about 4-5 years. I have an additional 2, I bought for $20 each. They suck (compared to old toasters), but at least I'm not paying $50-$100, every 1-2 years, just to have a sh*tty toaster that has the depress mechanism break, and can no longer toast, without being present and holding it down for 3-4 mins…)

          • +1

@metalslaw: Agree on the + 10 seconds on the microwave and a toaster. Especially the microwave.

The bread slices atleast in my case dont need a flip and is 80% uniformly toasted and thats good enough for me. Though flipping 3/4th the way definitely makes it better. Sister has a breville and its not much better TBH. Maybe 5% better lol.

    • Ours is 10 years and I hope it lasts another 10.
      I think I paid $179 for our 4 slice.

    • Now that I think about it, the slider was super sensitive. One tiny touch, and it would go from 3 to 8. There was no inbetween. But as long as no one messed with my setting, it was good until the lift mechanism stopped working.

The issue I have with my new cheapo sunbeam(?) is the sides protrude over the slot, which makes getting slices out painful at times.

they have one that's twice the price "coming soon"

Wow, amazing youtube video. Who knew what the nichrome wire did, that is a bloody amazing invention. Stick with it until at least half way peoples.

Although I do wonder why i just watched it at 3.30 in the morning

      • +5

Alec is a great explainer and presenter

      • Beautiful. I don't get out antiquing much but when I do I will be paying all attention to the toasters - what a thrill it would be to have and use such a classy machine.

    • Will the new one say "Howdy-doodly-do"?

    • $469 for a toaster. My goodness.

      • +1

I hope it makes the bread before it toasts it

      • and a 2 slicer nonetheless

    • Wow, i've been a technician and engineer for 40 odd years and am blown away by the operation of this toaster👍
Who would have thought!! only concern for me would be ensuring the wiring isn't asbestos insulated….

$179 smart toaster for the people that aren’t so smart themselves. How hard is it to cook toast?

    • -6

if all you toast is the square supermarket loaf it’s easy, once you get to artisan bakery loaves it’s harder as the brands all cook at different rates and so top cooks faster than bottom of slice, especially sourdoughs. i have this toaster, nothing really smart about it except the crumpet setting, but it’s still timer driven so need to adjust for bread types. Also besides the smart toaster i have a dualit, it’s very primitive in features but has protective mica cover over the elements so that if heating muffins and some touches the element, it doesn’t short out and kill the element. Dualit elements in a smart toaster with optical sensor would be the ultimate toaster, but i’d hate to see the price tag. Sad.t this is for the small slice toaster, they make one for long slices which is great for artisan bakery loaves as the slices are longer but only a few retailer sell that one e.g myer, DJ, it’s about $190 when on special.

      • +2

Your comment still says its not worth 179.

        • +1

Well this can lift and look, soft release ( you won't get jumpy panic attacks) and led indicators , can your kmart toster can do this ? 😉

          • +2

@boomramada: Jumpy panic attacks is manageble over getting heart attack trying to justify the purchase. And everyday it will remind me its 179 whenever I look at it.

            • @John Doh: You simply questioning the BMW driver why bought one when Toyota can do the same job, going from point A to B ? 😉

Well i bought one years ago and I love it, so is the mother in law 😂😂😂😂

              • +1

@boomramada: Fair enough. Not saying there cant be bargains for high end stuff, but this is a site for bargainers and there will be questions / comments ;)

                • @John Doh: Keep in mind, I bought this for like $110 before covid, back then RRP is like $140. I don't think my pay got double since then.

Now RRP is like $220, which is ridiculous. I got your point. It just a fancy but good toaster.

                  • @boomramada: People have more dispensible money I guess. The more you buy, the more they will jack the prices. So its your purchase pre-covid the reason why its 220 today.

                    • @John Doh: Yay so my mother-in-law never would be able to buy one, I like that :)

                      • @boomramada: Give yours to her. Be friends again. You might get free food occasionally. Less work at home.

    YGTBK - $179.
Plenty of similar regularly on sale for $50 - $100

My KitchenAid from 2020 still going strong. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/582565

  • Pulls up post from 5 yeas ago to prove purchase lol

  • +1

If you like crumpets, this is the toaster for you.
    Crumpet mode just works.

  • +3

Love the innovative features. I would have never thought of popping my toast back down for “a bit more” or popping it up for a “lift and look”. Truly genius…

    • +1

      /s

  • I have the 4 slice version got it for $100, 5 years ago, still going very strong.

  • -1

Not a massive fan. It cooks unevenly, one side more than other. It resets and the toast won't come out. It's odd.

    • +2

Yours must be defective, why didn't you get a replacement?

    • +8

If you're trying to use it as a fan, that'd be the problem. It's a toaster.

    • Sounds like a warranty issue.

    • +2

Must be defective, mine still cooks evenly after ~6 years

    • +1

Yours is probably faulty then. Never had uneven toasting or any other similar problems with mine.

    • Bought this ages ago. Every couple of months or so it gets stuck and flashes white lights. I just give it a whack on the side while the lights are flashing, it lets the toast go and rises back up. If you miss whacking it while the lights are flashing then, turn it off wait 5 min turn it back on.

  • +1

Have had the four slice version forever and a day. One of my favourite bit of nonsense in the kitchen

  • Does not end cooking at particular browness.. nor include china wifi spyware firmware .. in no way is this “smart”.

    • +1

Have you noticed, lowest price slowly going up?

    • Yeah was going to say I only paid $100 ~6 years ago

      • +1

        6 years ago, RRP wasn't $229

  • Anyone who thinks they need motorised lift deserves to be suckered into paying $179 for a toaster.

  • +1

the slots are wide enough to fit a 4,n,20 meat pie , thaw out in microwave and crisp in toaster, from freezer to plate is 4 mins for a crisp pie.

  • +1

Our 4 toast Breville is 10 approx, had some intermittent issues Breville wasn’t interested in but I sorted them and it’s still going. The slow rising of the toast is a game changer - sets me up for the day.

  • I have a motorised lift toaster and it is painfully slow to raise the toast to check if it's burn't.

  • $179 for a two toast slice !!!! In this economy ??

  • -2

I'm retired had a few toasters over the years, most expensive probably $29 , some lasted 15 years. Why would anyone want a smart toaster is beyond me , it is just a data gathering device first a toaster second.

    • +2

It really isn't a 'smart' toaster though. It is not connected to the internet or anything. I have this model, it is just a fancy toaster with some nice to have features.

I bought it a couple years ago for a much lower price though. It does make really good toast, its great with crumpets, but the value for money is pretty poor. At this price point, its not really worth it.

  • +2
  • -1

This company clearly don't know their intended market for this, people who would be willing to spend that much on a toaster would need it to be much longer so they can put in their fancy artisanal bread slices, umm or so a friend told me…

  • How dare they RRP this without Bluetooth built-in..

Don’t see iQ mentioned anywhere either so they’re probably saving that for their $1K model…

  • Paid 219 for the 4 slice version in 2021, still going strong. Best toaster I've used and I love not having the lever.

  • Got this one and still going strong after 7 years on everyday use.

Good looking toaster for my stone bench.

  • Does this have AI?

  • My toaster is dumb as shit compared to this brainiac.

  • +1

$174 through the good guys price beat
