Just moved a dead brown snake yesterday, not a bad investment.

    • Is this actually snake proof?

      • +3

Probably not, but I know I'd rather be wearing them for a number of reasons while clearing scrub - I have another pair of Sea to Summmit gaiters that I've used while hiking exenstively and from a brush and weed perspective they're great, but I certainly do feel a bit better wearing them in snake country too.

With Eastern Browns at least, their fangs rarely exceed 4mm in length and most elapid snakes aren't much more than that either with exceptions of King Browns and Coastal Taipans with 10-12mm fangs.

Nothing ever 100% guaranteed but I'd feel quite safe in these stopping a potential bite from happening.

Chances of snake bite of any kind are already tiny for most people, and even smaller in the wild/open environment (as against in a shed for example).

          • @Igaf: I'd be wearing these to the shed!

  • XL meaning thick legs?

    • I don't know how thick "thick" is but I wear a size 12 boot and got these, and they fit perfectly. . I'm 180cm tall..

      • Are they really hot to walk in, or like breathable pants? Some are so bad like wrapping plastic around your legs in hot climates.

I wore mine hiking in SE QLD in Summer, yeah they're warmer than not wearing anything around your legs - but it's not as if the rest of you isn't bloody hot and sweaty regardless. Hydrate! I do find while bush bashing wearing gaiters that I found them more like breathable pants, but the comfort/peace of mind of being able to walk through scrub etc. was quite worth it.

I have rather thick calves, the XL size fit nicely - I'm 5'7 and 110kg, so short and fat.

      • Yea I'm guessing it's a bit like belt sizing

        • Also worth noting they 'tighten' with the belt above your calf, so they don't have to fit perfectly, they'll be loose below that - you just need to make sure you cinch it, like a belt.

    • I have solid calves and these are too tight over jeans, esp at the top. I suggest you try them in a shop if you can. Ended up buying two different pairs of XL Kenetrek hunting gaiters from the US Amazon site on special ($35/$48).

      • as a mostly liquid form human, thanks. might try them on first

        • I'm talking > 3 years ago. S to S may have responded to feedback and made more recent versions actually XL in girth. They weren't even close in 2022.

Can't see anywhere that they are snake bite proof?

    • I couldn’t either.

    • Is there such a thing?

      • +3

No, but I know I'd rather be wearing them if a snake had a go at me than not.

        • Have you tried them?
I wanted to ask about them when I was at the deer expo but the stand was too busy when I first got there and then I forgot to go back later in the day.

@mapax: It came up while I was searching so have no experience. Crackshot guardz is an other. They have a product liability policy but based overseas so not sure how it handled here.

    • I think these are just for waterproofing and leaves. Maybe need leather for snakes

    • "Among their models, the Quagmire Canvas gaiter is the most puncture-resistant and thus provides better snake defence than the eVent version, thanks to its tighter weave of 8 oz canvas."

      AI

There are plenty of snake gaiters out there but there is nothing that is snakebite proof. You would need Ned Kelly gaiters for that.

    • Snake bite proof lacks the universally recognised standards. Even when manufacturers cite potentially relevant standards (like ASTM F2878), this merely indicates they have employed some puncture resistant materials, without guaranteeing the absence of design flaws. No one knows whether they have tested the joints and edges.

Transition between standards is not a given, just as many people may surprised to learn that some bullet proof armor is actually vulnerable to stabbing. Australia needs a real PPE standard for that.
