I have kayano 32 , great shoe for being on feet all day. Was recommended by my podiatrist after having some ongoing feet pains especially after doing the 5km bridge to brisbane. Been watching the price since release , this is the first decent price. Will be filling a price protection on it.

    • +1

Was also reccomended by my podiatrist. Very good shoe.

      • +1

My podiatrist recommended the Nimbus due being a Neutral shoes.

Depends where you live but I've seen them cheaper at ASICS at DFO/Birkenhead Point in Sydney

    • Depends where you live

      So it's like insurance?

    • Very unlikely to see k32 have discount at the outlet.

    • Definitely wouldn't be the Kayano 32, likely the 31 or 30.

      • It was the 32. In only 1-2 colour ways. White/beige and black. Was about $200ish

        • +1

I can second that. Ive seen them in $200 mark at Southwarf DFO

  • Thanks, but got myself a pair. Wish shop back had a upsize

  • +1

If u have access to an asics outlet, and go on random days, you can pick up older Kayanos for $ 75-135. I have a stockpile of like 7. My fav is kayano 25.

    • +2

Make sure you rotate through wearing them.
They start to perish in storage and wearing them slows that down.

  • +2

+1 for Outlet if you don't need the latest release. Typically they have the previous gen or one before that for $150 with decent sizing availability and colourways. Call before arriving to avoid disappointment 😊

  • Good price IMO. Still relatively new. Suited to a pronator.

For reference, the Asics professional discount is 35%, if it's close to 35% it's a good deal and Asics isn't really making a profit.

  • +6

If you're happy with an older model, you can regularly get them $100 off or so. Can be had cheaper occasionally, cheapest I've got them for was $120 for the 27 a few years ago.

Yes, they are good and generally last a long time. There can be some significant changes between models. A newer model isn't necessarily better for everyone, some people prefer particular models.

But this is a good price for the current model.

  • +3

Prior to these shoes, I was exclusively wearing sneakers everywhere. I have wide feet and used to have feet sore after walking for a few hours. Bought these for a Japan trip where I was walking 20k steps per day and haven't looked back since.

Great cushion, support, and lots of foot room.

Worth every single cent and I would even consider buying another pair once mine wear out.

  • I just got the GEL-KAYANO 31, is there really any difference between the 31's and 32's?

    • -1

Not really just get whatever is the best deal.

    • +1

I watched youtube reviews and they preferred the 31, I tried on the 32 and they were brilliant took the pain away almost instantly. So i guess horses for courses .

      • +1

Best to try on both. And reviews.
However when the 31 was current they would have been heaps better than the 30 etc etc 🙃.

  • Go to a DFO or similar ASICS store and get a previous years model for ~$150. That's what I did. You don't need the current year shoe.

  • -5

This vs $40 addidas. No thanks.

    • Depends on whether you support for your feet, i had pain on my left because it was collapsing too much and this and brooks were the ones that releived the pain.

  • Just a caution: I've had maybe the last 5 generations of Kayanos and these are first that run really warm when running, to the point where I'm looking for something else. Located in Brisbane.

    • +1

I'd have a look at DFO NB Fuel Cell Rebel v4 or the 1080 are pretty good.
can get for about 160 I think

      • The Rebel 4 is not even remotely in the same category of shoe.

  • +2

Novablast 5 also on sale $192 (from $240)

  • Whats the main difference between the KAYANO VS NIMBUS?
Is it apple vs oranges? Or more like granny smith vs pink lady?

    • Type that exact question into AI or google ;).

      • Im lost with the answer. It did any theyre both apples. I need to work out if my foot rolls inwards

        • Best thing to do is go to an athlete's foot tomorrow walk on their machine thing. Not obliged to buy. I can wear either but got nimbus

    • +1

Nimbus is designed for maximum cushion while the Kayano is designed to be a balance between cushioning and support. The support helps out a lot if your feet pronate (roll inwards) or if you've had injuries to your knees/ankle in the past just to protect against injuries.

    • +1

Kayano for a rolled in low arch foot. Nimbus for a higher arch less table foot.

Highly recommend people explore Taobao for running shoes. Might take a little extra effort to understand the Chinese market, but you will be paying almost 1/3 the price of western brands.

    • any recommended stores or resources you use? or even specific shoes?

      • +1

Tell me what sort of runner you are, or what sort of shoes you've enjoyed. Ive tested a lot of Chinese runners.

        • I appreciate the tailored advice, last shoes I purchased was the Asics T805N (GT-2000 6) and they were quite enjoyable. I believe I do have overpronation. I'm looking for a multipurpose shoe, I don't run very long, a few km every week, but more looking for using it with any active activities (running, walking, sports, hiking, etc).

          • +1

@Undercut 2241: Its a little tricky to find an all purpose shoe to cover hiking, walking and running.

Chinese shoes tend to be more like tools - there is one model very well suited for one type of task.

If I had to recommend a couple safe options to support easy runs, some walking and the trail- I'd suggest you look at Qiaodan TG 1.0.

It's a recent release, you can find it easily on AliExpress or Taobao.

It's more of a max stack shoe, and will offer you stability and cushioning. The outsole is also using a very hardy CPU material so trails won't cause much damage.

You can usually pick it up for $80 AUD. It's going to be reasonably similar to an ASICS Novablast 5.

            • @balexa47: Thank you, I appreciate it. May I ask how do you decide what shoes to buy yourself? Do you just blind buy after reading some reviews?

        • Which Chinese shoes would be equivalent to ASICS Gel Kayano and Brooks Adrenaline?

I know these are similar shoes but generally the ASICS are heavier and supposedly more durable (personally I have found the Brooks Adrenaline more durable).

I would like to try a pair of each.

Is there any benefit to TaoBao over Aliexpress?

          • +1

@AccuracyAdvocate: Taobao is maybe 20% cheaper, it's meant for Chinese buyers, not western buyers.

In regards to Kayano equivalents and other stability trainers I can't say I've tested any. All the Chinese brands offer this type of shoe, but it's not something I have used.

I will say in terms of outersole wear, you'll find Chinese brands build shoes to last, western brands dont. So you'll have no concerns if you try a shoe from Qiaodan, Xtep, Li-ning etc

            • @balexa47: Thanks.

"it's meant for Chinese buyers, not western buyers". There must be something more specific than this.
The only challenges I can see are:
              1. Language, which there are ways around.
              2. Delivery, but I understand that international delivery is now possible and is part of the platform, admittedly it may not always be cost effective.
              3. Payment methods, I'm not sure what is accepted but there will be ways around that.

In any case I'll be travelling to China myself soon so I'll have to make the best use of my return baggage allowance!

              • +1

@AccuracyAdvocate: Taobao is AliExpress, but it's meant for Chinese buyers as I've mentioned. Meaning that the platform is designed around Chinese language, Chinese brand expectations, and Chinese price expectations.

In terms of payments, and delivery it's every bit what you would expect from AliExpress, except far more options for shipping like consolidation, direct to door, direct to store.

I'd suggest you try the app, and use Google translate, or a chrome extension to convert to English. You can change the app to English, but then prices will be jacked and brands limited.

                Good luck

                • +1

@balexa47: And enjoy your holiday, a good opportunity to try on the shoes. Just be aware that Chinese retail is slightly different, you won't find shoes cheaper in store, online via taobao is going to be best priced, even with the shipping on top

                  • @balexa47: While in China I would purchase using Taobao and have delivered to me in China, in theory saving by using the Taobao platform (vs Aliexpress), save on shipping, save GST.

I've decided on the following stability shoes:
361 Fierce Max - a max cushioning shoe, comparable to the Gel Kayano. I would use this for long runs and some threshold runs.
361 Fierce 5 - less cushioning but should be lighter, comparable to the Adrenaline GTS. This will be for time trials, sprints, VO2 max, and some threshold runs.
Xtep 2000km Plus - a cheaper alternative to the above shoes. This will be for easy runs, walking around, a single shoe to use when travelling. The idea is to save wear on the expensive shoes where I don't need the performance. I'm not yet sure if it is a max cushioning shoe or not, nor the weight, so unsure if it is an alternative to the Kayano or the Adrenaline.

I asked my Chinese friend to look for these on TaoBao but did not have much success

                    On Aliexpress:
Xtep 2000km Plus - $78.50 total, I've ordered this shoe. Price has actually gone up now to about $83 total now that "sales" are on.
361 Fierce Max - $105.45 total. This was $124.24 prior to current sales, listed price $140 ex GST. The current price looks good and I'd like to buy ASAP, just need to confirm sizing. I'm curious how much cheaper Taobao could be.
361 Fierce 5 - $94.17, so not as big a saving compared to listed price is $99.69 ex GST. They don't have my size anyway. Less urgent to pull the trigger on this.

                    • @AccuracyAdvocate: Those prices seem okay on AliExpress.

Maybe if Taobao is too difficult just stick with what's working.

None of these shoes you've mentioned tend to stand out as great models - but understand you have some stability shoe preferences.

I'd recommend just trialing 1 pair from one of these brands first, before jumping in and buying 3 pairs.

                      • @balexa47: Thanks for the feedback.
Taobao won't be too difficult, just a bit complicated to navigate, I won't give up easily. I have since signed up myself and found what appears the Xtep for $47 and Fierce Max for $80, both ex GST and ex shipping to AU. Can't find the Fierce 5.
"None of these shoes you've mentioned tend to stand out as great models"
This is somewhat concerning to hear. It is my understanding that the 361° Fierce Max and Fierce 5 are among the best dedicated stability offerings from Chinese brands, designed specifically to compete with shoes like the ASICS Kayano and Brooks Adrenaline.
Unless you mean these are the best Chinese stability offerings but still not great shoes, this is equally concerning and means I should stick with ASICS and Brooks stability shoes.

I am certainly interested if there are better stability choices from Chinese brands that I have missed?

My plan is to trial one pair from each brand first (Fierce Max, Xtep), I wouldn't let a poor experience with one brand reflect on another, before committing to any others. I have ordered the Fierce Max (in addition to the Xtep) and also picked up Kayano 31 yesterday at DFO ($170, last day of sale, though I think 30 still on sale at $150).

I have a future need for high performance racing shoes (super shoes I guess), but these won't/can't be stability and they would be for time trials / races, this however is a separate discussion.

                        • @AccuracyAdvocate: For race shoes, I'd recommendclooking into the Qiaodan Plaid 1.5.. They are somewhat like a Nike Alphafly, lots of cushioning, a large contact patch to give some stability, and well suited to a range of athlete paces.

I've seen on Taobao over the last few months for around $135 delivered.

They can race any long distance event, but really the sweet spot is half to full marathon. I've run a 68 min half in them, and friends have been happy with them at much slower paces too.

The stability shoes you mentioned are probably fine - I just have no experience with them.

Usually with the Chinese market I've found shoes in the $80-100 range can be great daily bang for buck shoes, shoes above $100 is when you see a noticeable performance difference.
