Here is some Black Friday Proton VPN Deals.

I can't see any Unlimited plans, nor Lifetime, but I don't even know if these have officially been announced yet other than the email a couple of days ago referencing 'biggest black friday sale yet'.

Also got a '30-day money-back guarantee', so always good to try :)
Expiring is Jan 5, found here
I has pasted them into ChatGPT to create some tables for you, hopefully easier to understand.

      Because?

      • +1

        December

      • +1

        Price? I don't understand

        • The Social Media ban for under 16s begins in December.

However this means that all Australians will need to somehow prove they are over 16 to access 'social media'.

VPNs such as this are the way.

          • @greenbull: I didn't understand why they asked that question. I use a VPN. Just said it was the best price posted to Ozbargain proton VPN.

  • I assume the VPN included with mail isn't the same as the standalone VPN deal?

    • I was looking at that too, I'm not sure, but I think/hope so?

        • +18

Just a heads up that ChatGPT is known to regularly produce incorrect information as it is just guessing the best answer. It would be better to double check with an official source.

      • +2

The VPN that you get with your mail is the free option.
It has a smaller selection of servers (I think like 8 total) and you don't actually get to pick which one it connects to.

Things only included with the premium vpn subscription:

        VPN locations in 126 countries
Manually select from the 126 countries and Secure core, p2p, Tor
        Port forwarding
        NetShield
        Split tunneling
        VPN Accelerator
        Allow LAN connections
        Custom DNS servers
        NAT type

  • +4

    For new users only?

    • +1

yeah they don't reward existing customers - you need to set up a new account to get it.
best time of year to do it, so you can create a new one in 2 years

      • +1

Yeah I might wait, I recently downgraded to mail-plus and still have a couple of year of Nord left so I might look again when that is due. Had no issues with ProtonVPN and can recommend it.

  • +1

For those thinking that proton is the be all and end all in internet security and or anonymity, they aren't. I do use their email service, but keep in mind they will hand identifying data over to authorities.

    • Hey Mate,
being a newby, i'm curious as to which service you recommend and why?
      thanks in advance

      • +3

Best is mullvad and pay with monero

        • Is there an easy, practical way to buy/acquire Monero in/from Australia?

          • +1

@timjohns: Easier way is to just buy a voucher from Amazon yes, if you want to go monero route just look up how to use cake wallet very straight forward.

          • -1

@timjohns: Why bother? Yor going to lose all anonymity when you connect to the VPN from your ISP connection. If they keep logs or are forced to keep them on you then your toast. Your ISP can also see your connected to a VPN server so you won't be anonymous, though they can't intercept your traffic they know your connected to a VPN. Only use crypto if you chain VPNs. If you can't work out how to buy crypto these days (how hard is? really…) then I doubt you can work out how to chain VPNs. Even I find chaining VPNs difficult! And it's a bitch to setup!

        • +1

Or buy a voucher from Amazon.

          https://amzn.asia/d/gLyhmI0

          • @HardQuiz: This 100%. You probably get more 'anonymity' from buying a anonymous voucher/scratch card on Amazon than you would buying with crypto.

          • @HardQuiz: Not available in Australia anymore. Can't purchase in other Amazon locations due to geo-location blocks.

            • @cpapi: Maybe regional or no stock at the time? It shows I can buy it.

    • +1

I agree. I used to use them but now I just used iCloud email hosting with my own domain. Saves money and email is not secure anyways. Just use Signal for important things

    • +14

For those thinking that proton is the be all and end all in internet security and or anonymity, they aren't.

Their VPN doesn’t keep logs, so there’s nothing to hand over about what you do online. And if you also sign up anonymously paying with Bitcoin you got anonymously, then there’s no identifiable info tied to your account either.
For VPNs, having your name or email doesn’t matter if there are no logs, but for something like an email service it can matter.
End of the day, when it comes to privacy and anonymity, how you use a service is just as important what you use.

    • +9

      Better than giving to google

    • They can only hand over your account/payment info and email subjects (these can't be encrypted apparently). They don't have access to anything else because it is all encrypted. As long as your email subject isn't incriminating eg. We rob the first national bank tonight 10pm! Just be aware of that one thing and there is no issue. I'm not sure if other services are able to encrypt the email subject.

  • +2

I have Pass Plus lifetime and im not eligble for any other subscription. Thats dumb.

  • Sorry, this offer is not available with your current plan. But you can get 50% off Proton Unlimited when you subscribe for 12 months.

  • Nord has been pretty bad for me recently. Is this much better?

    • +2

The Proton VPN is hands down. Also the port forwarding is great as are their range and numbet of server locations.

      • The Proton VPN is hands down.

        Hands down what!?

        • Typed to fast. Hands down the best. Both in terms of speed and port forwarding.

    • +1

I’ve had way better speeds with Proton.

      • What speed are you getting? I got Nord and its slow

        • Did a speed test a little while ago and got 243/77 on my 1000/100 connection. I generally get over 200Mbps pretty much all the time, but I've seen it go over 400Mbps after midnight.

          • @opt: Weird I get about 850-880mbps on my 1000/100 telstra connection using nord. I have never used proton paid vpn, do people get same or higher?

            • +1

@turnipy: Update - Just joined proton unlimited for $1 30 day trial
              - Proton Speed test (Au server) - 787mbps down / 89mbps up
              - Nord Speed test (Au server) - 851mbps down / 94mbps up

Naturally YMMV, but this is from my tests tonight 9:50pm

              • @turnipy: Weird indeed… Did another test and got 661/86. Looks like it’s a bit all over the place. While I haven’t seen anything under 200 Mbps, I also can’t recall seeing anything over 800 Mbps. I get 900/90+ on normal speed tests without the VPN, so it looks like the VPN is the bottleneck. But I’m on Opticomm, and I wouldn’t put it past them to throttle VPN traffic. I need to test on NBN or another network to be sure.

      • Agreed. Proton pretty much maxes out my connection.

  • I literally just paid for a 2 year plan last night. Any way i can get a refund?

    • +3

      30-day money-back guarantee

    • New users only for this deal so depends if you signed up for the 2 years as a new user or have renewed.

  • +1

Pretty sure the "lifetime" stuff is charity auctions like they do throughout the year, so unlikely to be something you can just buy.

    • +1

Yeah, charity auctions only for lifetime for Proton, anyway most lifetime VPN deals are only valid for 10 years. So not real lifetime.

      • +2

The way AI is going that sounds like lifetime to me

        • You would be surprised how time goes. My previous 3X3 year Windscribe licenses are almost expired. Only yesterday I bought them. Time flies!

          • +1

@GardenGnome: Windscribe took my lifetime VPN away from me. I am now a Vengeful Phantom Nerd.

            • @Meconium: Why? Too many downloads? They usually start off with full lifetime, then they renege and say 10 years, then 5. In the end you just have to eat their shit with lifetime license. That is why I don't buy them, only VPN companies who offer them are usually poor substandard and not worth using.

  • +1

Haven’t used their email, but the VPN is better than PIA (which I’ve used for years) and Nord (which I trialled for 30 days) for my needs. It’s fast, has more real exit nodes, and more reliable. It’s also generally considered by the community to be a more privacy focused than most of the other popular options out there.

    • Thanks my PIA finishes in 15 days and this is what I wanted to hear

  • This or Nord VPN?

    • +1

      Depends what you’re looking for.

      http://techlore.tech/vpn/

      • Thanks, pretty cool list and info…some were a bit technical for me. Whats a 'Warrant Canary'?

        • +5

A law enforcement officer who is a bird.

        • +2

          From Wiki:
"A warrant canary is a method by which a communications service provider aims to implicitly inform its users that the provider has been served with a government subpoena despite legal prohibitions on revealing the existence of the subpoena. The warrant canary typically informs users that there has not been a court-issued subpoena as of a particular date. If the canary is not updated for the period specified by the host or if the warning is removed, users might assume the host has been served with such a subpoena. The intention is for a provider to passively warn users of the existence of a subpoena, albeit violating the spirit of a court order not to do so, while not violating the letter of the order."

          • +2

            @Magpye: Thanks. So…. It’s not a bird.

            Hold on… your username….!!

    • +6

What the heck are you talking about?

      • -3

if you dont know, you dont know. good luck with that. Microsoft and Amazon shutting down all Israeli cloud servers due to honesty in privacy compliance (NON EXISTENT). nothing goes behind israeli government, so again, good luck with that.

    • +2

Proton are not Israeli owned or affiliated though?
Kape Technologies (Teddy Sagi) owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access (PIA), ZenMate, Hotspot Shield, Betternet, and Touch VPN.

  • am i screwed if im already a pass plus sub and wanting to renew?

    • wait when does this deal end? Mine expires tomorrow.

      • +1

        Jan 5

        • oh thx. I should've read the post.

  • tuta mail is better guys

    • Yes but they don't have tuta vpn

      • +1

It was better before they blocked most VPN servers from signup and made it nearly impossible to create a new account. You can create an account with tuta but it won't be activated if you use a known VPN. Proton you can still sign up with a VPN. Only need to solve a captcha with Proton. Last time I checked this was the case, anyway, might have changed others should know :=)

  • +2

I've been using Proton VPN for the past 2 years. Good experience using them

  • My Nord is expiring on Feb. Using it mainly for my unraid server. Should I jump the gun now? How long until this deal is done?

    • Jan 5th.

      • Oh cool, didn't see that. Thanks!

  • Before you buy this, you can get a month VPN Plus sub for $1.

Considering this doesn't end until January. You might as well stack up this on top.

    • after sub for 1 month, are you still eligible as new user?

  • I thought proton vpn was free.

    • +1

      Different tiers :)

      See site for differences

    • Free Proton is shit, 4 servers only and speed is capped. Last time I checked anyway.

      • ok but for the purpose of vpn that's fine/works doesn't it??

also seems like I have slower internet than everyone else on ozb so I think speed limit wouldn't be an issue for me.

        • No it's shit, anything free including Proton is not worth it. You would have to check T&C's, they may use free data for analytics or sell the data itself. Honestly just grab the 2 year deal, it works out at $4AU a month and is very much worth it. Proton, Mullvad, IVPN, AirVPN. Nothing else comes close with VPN's. If you don't want to pay for 2 years sub then Mullvad, you can pay monthly. FYI you get what you pay for, quality costs etc…

          • @GardenGnome:

            or sell the data itself.

I read in an article for "free vpns" that proton free tier was specifically one of the free ones that didn't sell the data. not sure about analytics.

but at the same time they seem to be really going the discord route in terms of marketing and subs.

multiple people recommended "proton mail" to me multiple times when asking about other email services. so I went with them when making a new one. so much friggin offers about "tiers" and "limited time sales" everywhere. recently I got a pop up trying to convince me to pay for a sub for "features". just like discord they seem to be enshittifying it and making their entire company about profit.

            • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Yeah, they PIMP their products through their services. Got a BF offer through their VPN yesterday. I don't care really but makes you wonder about their profit model.

Their Proton email is one of the only email services left that you could sign up with a VPN with just a captcha, most others ban or limit your account after sign up or want a mobile.

As I said "Proton, Mullvad, IVPN, AirVPN. Nothing else comes close with VPN's.". If you don't like Proton, then the other 3 will do with less advertising.

              • @GardenGnome: you could sign up with a VPN with just a captcha

ok I have no idea what benefit that has but good to know I guess.

                • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: Captcha stops /is meant to stop automated bots signing up to 1000's accounts per second. It's aimed to stop fraud basically.

  • -3

I used to use it, but now I use iCloud emai It's cheaper and the email isn't as secure. I only use Signal for important stuff.

  • PROTON UNLIMITED 77.88 USD/127.14 AUD 12M

    • +1

Then after that, once your locked in it goes up to $300 odd. Its then hard to move your email address, etc and start a-new.

  • -1

Constantly looking for servers that I could connect to. Can't auto connect to an active server. Had a lot of issues. Going back to Mullvad.

  • +1

Expiry might be 1st Dec 2025 instead of 5th Jan 2025 according to the countdown timer on the deal page now.

  • How many devices does the VPN deal support at any one time? Ie can I only use Proton VPN on the 2 year deal on one device at a time?
