  one LM35 plus RPI Pico and small software can do the temperature measurement nicely, also can set up different Output to drive fan or heater etc…

  Will this teach me about how small electronics work? Or do I need a lot of pre-knowledge before attempting something like this?

    Looks to me like this kit is more for practicing/learning soldering. That being said, they do advertise the supplied manual may supply "a clear understanding of the product". For $10 I would totally try my luck. Pity it doesn't use an ESP32 or some other iot enabled chip…

    Anyway looks like minimal electronics experience is required for assembly.
