Seems very cheap, I wonder how well it will make coffee.

Kogan has now changed the listing to 'Dual Thermoblock'
https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-dual-thermoblock-espresso…

Looks/Feel:
The machine looks great, My fiancé loves how it looks. The tamper it came with is very heavy and has a lovely wooden handle. The group handle is also very heavy and feels very quality.

Grinder:
I will not be testing the grinder as I am currently using a Mazzer Super Jolly. The grinder does appear to be internal though so there isn't any easy way to pull it apart and clean it.

Steam Wand:
Definitely takes a longer time than I am used to on my Sunbeam but gets the job done. A single hole in the middle of the wand and can confirm the steaming while pouring seems to work. Excited to see how much time this saves when we have visitors next.

Coffee:
I normally dose 22g of coffee grinds however I was unable to get the handle to fit properly in the machine with this much coffee. Went down to 18g and I was able to get the handle in easily and dial it in. I've now poured 6 or so good shots in a row and am very pleased.

I am happy with my purchase and will be selling my Sunbeam Mini Barista.

Update: Obtained approval to order this. We currently have a Mazzer Super Jolly commercial grinder and Sunbeam Mini Barista machine. I'll report back with my results.

I can't comment on the quality.

But the most important tool in making espresso coffee is the grinder.

(ok yes, you need a machine, but a good grinder + average machine will be much better than a average grinder + good machine).

        Hand grinding espresso is brutal

        • -7

harden up. takes about 30-40 seconds. I'm about to crack one out now!

yeah, is more difficult than electric, but at the price point of this 'deal' handgrinding is the only real way to get good enough quality grinder.

the $150 one linked would be equivalent of a 500-600 grinder with a motor.

          • +3

@StorminNorman: My Turin DF54 was only $319 on sale

            • @antik: nice pickup. that's about where that hand grinder sits. i have a 1zpresso j-ultra hand griinder, but it isn't in the pricerange of this discussion.

but yeah, that one you got is what i was tossing up between and a handgrinder. cause i have a handpress coffee machine i made the choice to go full manual.

if you are going to get a coffee machine, buy once, cry once.

          • +1

@StorminNorman: Cool, I'm sure you're very strong and virile.

IRL the hand grinder will be more expensive for mere mortals because you'll just go buy a coffee rather than hand grinding each and every single time.

      • for $10 more you can have a machine with a stainless steel boiler. generally considered better than an aluminium boiler.

        • Got a link, please? And grinder recommendation (not hand)?

    • I agree with you regarding the grinder and priorities, but nothing indicates here that it's at least an average machine (not a low quality one), and even less that it's a good grinder.

    https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Programmable-15-Bar-S…

This seems to be the model, looks the same except the Kogan one claims to be 20 bar and Dual Boiler. Seems like the Chinese manufacturer offers a few different configurations and obviously allows for companies to slap their logo on it.

Always a bit of buyer beware as it could be perfectly fine, but it's always a bit more of a gamble as there's no long term reviews from good sources. Any issues and servicing likely to also be more problematic too.

    • The key point of value for the Kogan one is being a dual boiler, I don't see how the one you have linked is comparable except for looks.

      • +2

But at what quality? You can add various parts onto you machine, but if its not properly designed, you're going to have issues.

From what I can see this is using an existing model base with some alterations. Looking at the dimensions it's a bit smaller than all of brevilles dual boilers, which doesnt fill me with confidence as there's a greater chance that compromises were made.

      • +3

I don't believe that the Kogan one is real dual boiler, what they probably referring is you can steam and brew at the same time, likely by means of dual Thermoblock heating system. The Kogan manual does not mention boilers nor its size either.

From the description of the Aliexpress listing it state: Single or double heating system. With PID intelligent temperature control for more accurate and stable temperature. So it is basically the same function.

      • Visually identical down to the led placement and text.

      • +1

Well I for one am looking forward to seeing your review regardless of whether it's a true dual boiler or not.

Chinese espresso machine makers have really up'd their game in the last couple of years (at least at the high end). At the end of the day espresso machine tech has generally remained the same - generate pressurised hot water to extract coffee, so in reality there's no real rocket science behind it.

    • Kogan claims its a 20 bar pump, there is another listing from the same manufacturer for the same machine that says its a 20bar pump (ie pump capacity) but actually delivers 15 bar which is what you'd expect.

      • Good thing you only need 9 bars of pressure at the group head

    Release the Kogan Bashers.

    • +14

LOL yeah as they have such a stellar reputation for outstanding products, trustworthy advertising conduct and absolutely bulletproof after sales service.

  • Can't find reviews. Keen to hear experiences because i don't want to buy something i have to palm off

This looks good on paper. 58mm portafilter, dual boiler with PID control and volumetric sensor for sub $400. Sounds too good to be true 🤔. I hope someone pulls one apart to see the build quality.

    • I am thinking the same, seems too good to be true

    • +1

There have been many espresso machines from Chinese factories and brands recently. Gemilai and Hibrew are two examples. They have features that many commercial machines have, such as 58 mm, OPV, and PID. You can check the reviews of the brands' models and maybe find some disassembly in some forums. Of course, can't guarantee that this Kogan one is the same quality as the former brands tho.

  • Looks like the gevi 3 in 1

    Breville Barista Express reborn?

    • That wasn't dual boiler though?

      • No it wasn't but still looks 90% like it

  • +1

    Looks like a Breville

    • +2

but half the price - dual boilers too i might add. I wonder how they get such low pricing - ala, what corners were cut to make this work.

  • +1

    inspired design

    bravo ruslan

  • Do these last?

  • Breville clone?

    • +2

Not a good one. 20 bar pressure is oddly high (and not something to brag about like their website tries to), and the three claimed brewing temps are all on the high side.

      • I know some think the higher the bar the better the machine, brew pressure should be controlled by OPV to ~9bar.
The image states temp option 92/94/96, but the manual states 90/92/94, so lots of contradictions there..

      • It's most likely a 20 bar pump which is technically correct.

  • That's an outrageous amount of machine for the dollar

  • +1

Just buy a used breville DB and learn to change o-rings. Surely this is hard rubbish soon enough.

  • +2

Ok who's going to take one for the team and test it out?

    • Hopefully Hoffmann hears about it

    • I'm still working on getting approval, I'm hoping I can take one for the team!

If it isn't actually dial boiler as others have mentioned them hopefully I can return under Kogan's return policy.

      • i can almost guarantee it'll be thermoblock like the sunbeam cafe series (which is fine tbh)

        • yeh ppl seem to agonise over dual boilers but in reality you'll just be waiting a bit longer for steam pressure to build up. It's nice to have but I'd rather have fast heat up over the "pro" E61 25 minutes.

          • @gadget: Dual boilers have much better temperature stability, which would result in more consistent espressos.

  • +1

I spent way too long researching this, but it’s not a dual boiler. It’s a dual thermoblock machine. Page 11 of the manual “…while the thermoblock heats”.

Obviously a dual thermoblock is still more versatile than the single thermoblock in something like a Breville Barista Express, but it’s not a true “dual boiler”.

You’d almost call it deceptive but I guess this is pretty on brand for ol Russian.

    • Thank you. I had a quick look through the manual and didn't see this.

Looks like a lot of machine for the money from the outside, but it misses in places - The portafilter may take 58mm baskets but it's not a standard E61 size (it has 3 ears), and I wouldn't be surprised if the supplied baskets are pressurized too. The drip tray also oddly shaped, and doesn't appear to have a float to indicate when it's full - Just a red piece in it to mark the full level, visible through the grid above. I'd also bet that the "Custom Shot Volume" setting for each button are time-based and not actually volumetric.

Will be interesting to see a review from someone who knows how to wield an espresso machine.

      • The supplied baskets are single wall - it is in the manual somewhere, but I can’t be bothered going back and looking again…

  • So if this is a thermal block which it likely is. Is it still a good value buy? My BES870 died after many years and need a replacement.

    • Maybe wait for Qwertyjnr's review? Personally I'd look in FB marketplace or Gumtree to search for a decent used machine and grinder.

    • Review is up!

  • I'm pretty sure this will be hot garbage like all the aldi fancy looking espresso machines, but I'm really hoping I'm wrong.

  • $299 now with the updated title "dual thermo block"
