Are these Tstak boxes practical? When you need something in the big box, you need to remove all the boxes on top of it, right?
I got one box that came with the 2 piece combo, and once I've taken the tools out of that box, I never put them back into that box again..

    • +3

Depends on how well you treat your tools I guess. I cut out foam inserts for each box and label the front with the contents.
They clip apart quite easily so it has never bothered me.

      • +2

Where are you getting the foam inserts? I've been looking to buy a heap of them for the tool chest and my boxes too - I'm not paying $15-$20 per drawer though which seems to be the rate which is ridiculous

        • +4

From Aliexpress usually costs about $2.50 per draw.

          • +1

@iratepirate: Are these the "pick out" foam inserts? How are you finding them?

I got a rifle case a long time ago for music gig equipment and the foam wasnt really dense enough to hold its shape when tipped.

I can imagine it might be good for hand tools but not heavier stuff.

EDIT: Had a quick look around and couldnt find much. But i have had success in the past buying eva sheet foam from bunnings and then cutting it myself

            • +3

@Sojio: I buy the coated dual layer ones that you cut out with a razor.

              • +6

@iratepirate: Could you please post the AliEx link, or some photo of you final product?
                Thanks

          • +2

@iratepirate: Could you please share a link of them?

    • I've contemplated about this for weeks. I'm not a professional at all but I would like to have some organisation with my tools. The obvious solution was drawers for underneath boxes but they were too expensive. In the end I went with a Keter rolling toolbox and ended up just putting all of my tools (which was not a lot anyway) in there.

      • I went with the Redline brand at TKD. Bigger than Tstak, therefore more practical to fit more tools per drawer. Also very good value for money compared to Packout/Toughbuilt crowd.

        • +1

Hey mate how’s the build quality and the drawer locking mechanisms?
Haven’t seen anyone with these in Sydney yet.

Looks to be only marginally cheaper than Toughbuilt and I think the Toughbuilt system is well built and good value for money.

Packout is the best but I can’t justify the cost as someone who isn’t on the tools everyday. However, I do have tools that I’d like to organise better and I’ve been close to biting the bullet on Toughbuilt.

I inspected every Toughbuilt item and I like it.

I’ve had TSTAK in the past and I’d rate it only slightly better than a Craftright toolbox for trade use on building sites and being carted around everyday in and out of vehicles or around building sites.

Toughsystem is far superior and more robust for this purpose but also larger and more cumbersome.

Tstak would be perfect for home use within a garage etc and only the odd excursion away from the featherbed.

It’s made of a less robust plastic and has a smaller footprint which lends well to wheeling around a finished and occupied house.

Haven’t been able to do an autismo audit of TSTAK2 so can’t comment on that system.

          • @h0mbre: Very good build quality. The Redline 3 drawer is $100 cheaper than Toughbuilt. But when TKD has it on sale, the difference increases. Once you add a few "boxes", the savings adds up.

The 2 drawer from Redline has a deeper drawer which I can fit a circular saw and an angle grinder. It is still the cheapest storage drawer that can fit those 2 tools. Still have to remove the disc and batteries but the convenience of drawers outweighs the small time needed to "assemble" it back to operational state.

            • @lomie: Why make my life difficult?
Thank you for the anecdote about the circ saw, that’s something important to me as well. Circ saws are especially cumbersome and hard to find good storage for them.

I think I may take you on your word and order these instead. You are right, it adds up when you add all the accessories and multiple boxes, which I’ll be doing.

              Thank you for responding!

              • @h0mbre: For context, they are the Dewalt 18V 184mm circular saw and 125mm angle grinder. The 165mm circular saw fits in easier. A bit of a puzzle to get the right fit but I would suggest taking your stuff to TKD to verify the fit. That's what I did but they have a range of tools already on the shelf to try in the drawers. Make sure you wait at least for their 10% off sale.

The rolling toolbox is currently $119.

          • @h0mbre: I have a mate who has the Packout, and watching him load his car is hilarious, the weight of them is way too much! I was looking at them and the Makita Maktrak, but being so big means when you fill them they weigh way too much. its ok when you are wheeling them around but when you need to lift them it's too much.
Dunno how people load them in to jacked up tradie trucks every day.

  • +2

The offer is identical at Tool Kit Depot (TKD) too.

    • Tool kit depot is saying it’s $90 shipping to Melbourne for me

  • +3

I have a set of these, they're good!
Decently solid, you do have to take the top ones off to get to the ones underneath, but it's pretty handy.

Only downside is if you're trying to go upstairs or have to lift it, you either lift it by the handle you use to wheel it or the handle of the top box. Both ways feel a bit risky if there's a lot of stuff loaded in there….

  • This is the v1 not v2 though right? I beleive the v2 has better clips which is a known issue

      • +2

Toughsystem is NOT the same as TSTAK. You can get an adapter plate.

Tstak is the cheaper storage system, while Toughsystem is designed to compete with Milwaukee packout and can take more of a beating, hold more weight, less likely to bend etc.

        • Is this v1 or v2 TSTAK ?

          • @bargin424: v1. You'll notice that v2 says TSTAKII normally and the yellow connectors on the side for stacking are different. See here:

            https://www.totaltools.com.au/148850-dewalt-tstakii-3-in-1-t…

            • @Clear: V2 has IP54 water rating though, which is stated in the desc. The product code is also higher than the one you linked on total tools.

              • @bargin424: These ones are IP54 rated

              • @bargin424: Yeah you'll find they're hugely inconsistent with their models. TSTAK I vs II vs II vs IV are all different and cross over with different features. Especially in bundles.

You'll find that most of them all have the gasket now for waterproofing, unless you can your hands on really, really old stock.

    • says 2.0, would that likely indicate version 2?

      • It's confusing as they used two product codes in the desc

DeWalt DWST83517-1 3-In-1 TSTAK Stackable Storage Tool Box System
DeWalt DWST83345-1 2.0 TSTAK Shallow Tool Storage Box

      • Pictures look like V1

        • Called a few stores (they don't know their own product). I've asked them to check whether it is metal or plastic clips and they confirmed it is metal clips. This confirms it is v1.

          • @bargin424: bugger! right after I ordered it too.

            • +1

@dingaling2: I think I got confused with the tough system. This actually might be the v2 of TSTAK

  • 44cm across - is that normal? Seems small

  • I have been waiting for this to come on sale!

Now I wonder if i can print some adaptors for the Makita boxes i have too so they can all clip together..

  • $100 and under and I give them ago as I have no need. Maybe beat at Buunings and use the 5% GC + 5x OnePass points. Still not under $100 but making it close to this previous deal

Note: RRP has increased by $9 since 2023.

  • -1

I get they’re meant to be used and would get knocked around but would these likely come delivered in a box or taken from dusty floor stock?

  • +4

Just a word of warning, the redemption offer is for DW ToughSystem 2.0 drawers - these are sturdier and larger than T-Stak drawers and they are NOT compatible with one another.

You can get an adapter plate but that goes from T-Stak (ontop) to ToughSystem (bottom) but it's not reversible. So you wouldn't be able to put the redemption drawers ontop of your T-Stak roller box for instance.

The T-Stak 3-in-1 on offer is v1. T-Stak & T-Stak II are compatible with one another.

  • +2

I picked up a bunch of V1 TSTAK deep boxes in Bunnings the other day for $29 each, not online at all and don't show stock levels on youinstock, item no 0889284 though if anybody is interested - equivalent to the middle box in this set

I always found it annoying to actually stack these systems and roll them around and prefer to use the boxes individually, so finding deep boxes that are actually affordable was great. This same 3-in-1 was next to it for $149 and seems to be a newer version (V2?) with a foam seal making it IP54 rated, but aside from that and the little yellow insert I couldn't see any difference

    • Sydney tools have it for $26.

      • Link? Can't find it, would like to buy more

        • Looks like it's removed, it was on their black & yellow catalogue.

          • @Richardc: I got two yesterday at $26 but it looks like they took it down so I didn't post it.

      • Checked and it's now $44 in their system.

    • Got one at bunnings for $29, thanks!

  • +2

Is it forgivable to put my ALDI tools in it?

  • +2

About time these go on sale. I've noticed every so often Mitre10 put them on sale.

Also, it's compatible with the Stanley Fatmax Pro Stack, Craftsman (US brand, on Amazon and pricey) and Repco Mechpro (though slightly bigger and tighter fit). Amazon UK + AliExpress sell some extra Tstak kits not available here too.

    • +1

Unfortunately, not really compatible with the Mechpro stuff. I brought my Tstak into Repco to try out but the feet are in a different spot. So it won't sit in the recess of the lids which means the side latches won't clip.

      • It's doable when lined up. This guy managed to do the same as me. Mechpro on the bottom and Tstak on-top. I've been using the Mechpro trolley with a double drawer, followed by tstak

        https://www.reddit.com/r/Tools/s/K27RHGVCKQ

        • Right! Mine wouldn't go on.

          • @lomie: Had to angle it right into the centre so the two side clips could latch on. Getting the first one is easy and the second needs some pressure.

            • @Clear: OK, maybe grind the feet off so it sits better?

        • Hey @Clear How have you found the mechpro drawers? would you recommend for use in a shed? (I.e. they are home use)

I strongly advise against shopping at Sydney Tools. Their return policy is practically non-existent.

I purchased a product for $179 and it was faulty out of the box. I returned it immediately and was told the item needed to be assessed by their warranty department.
After several days they agreed the item was faulty, despite this, they refused a refund and insisted on providing store credit only, due to "store policy".

I have spent a silly amount of time following up through emails and phone calls over a very straightforward consumer issue.

At this point, it is no longer about the $179 dollars. It is about principle. I have involved NSW Fair Trading.
Consumer rights exist for a reason. Businesses must honour them.

Ill never shop at Sydney Tools again.
Say what you will about Bunnings, but their warranty and claims are next level.

    F*** you Sydney Tools.

      • +4

ACL says replacement or refund at customers choice for a major fault.

    • I've personally never shopped at Sydney Tools, but despise businesses that make returns difficult. Do you know if this is the case at most Sydney Tools, or would it specifically be the one you dealt with?

I'm keen on this set, but if that's going to be the post sales support, then I'd rather pay more elsewhere for peace of mind.

      • +8

Sydney Tools in general, check out their return policy. Sydney Tools in general has a very poor approach to returns.

When the item failed, I took it back immediately. The issue was obvious and I even had video evidence showing the fault. However, they insisted it had to be sent to their warranty department for assessment and that I would need to wait up to seven business days for a possible outcome.

The problem is that I needed the tool for work. I could not afford to wait. I had no choice but to purchase another one elsewhere in the meantime.
I even provided them with the receipt showing that I had to replace it while waiting for their assessment, yet they still refused to provide a refund and only offered store credit.

Under Australian Consumer Law, if a product is faulty and fails to meet acceptable quality standards, the consumer is entitled to a refund or replacement for a major failure. A store cannot enforce a store credit only policy in these circumstances.

Just a PSA for those considering purchasing items from them, know what your getting into.

    • -3

Really depends they've been really good every time.

Had a whole bunch of my tools stolen and this exact trolley kit and the boys there helped me out when I went to replace it.

  • Now we just need an Ozito version

    • +3

We had one "CNCT-T". The problem with so many different systems is that a lot of brands release one but don't maintain it so finding new boxes or addons in the future is impossible. I fell into this trap when I bought a ToolPro set from SCA, it went out of stock for a long time and they released a new set that is of course incompatible…

Better to stick to big brands and systems for this kind of thing IMO

      • Yeah, I did that with Sistema. Bought a bunch of kitchen containers and then they go and change the design purely for aesthetics. Not going to invest in Sistema again…

    • Ozito discontinued theirs, but the original Einhell E-Case version is on Amazon and expensive.

  • Thanks OP, ordered one set.

  • I like the tstak series, but the Mclaren 3 piece set was better than this as the top had the clear organiser case. Also be aware you cannot open the lids on anything but the bottom case all the way without removing it from the stack.

  • +1

I ordered this to go with all my boxes from the Supercheap 12v clear out. Seemed like a good deal.
Then I went into my local Bunnings and found what I think is the exact same thing for $149 "regular price". It's not on the website and I didn't take a pic, but I swear it was the same thing; 3 boxes, ip54 rated, regular tstak, not the yellower version.
To be honest it looks a little dinky next to the big boys, but it should be fine for my needs. I think it's the free shipping which makes it a deal.

  • Do people actually use these to store tools in their garage? Or just if being mobile and travelling? I bought some at the last sale and actually found them a bit useless

    • I found them too bulky to travel with, especially trying to shove the 2 smaller boxes into the overhead luggage.

  • +1

Placed an order at noon, ive already had two emails from the local store with updates on stock and delivery (not automated).

    • Same and mine was delivered today!

  • I got a set of these today at Bunnings for $135. Seems to be some stock at a few stores. I also got one of the deep power tool storage boxes (for $29) which fits/connects with this set.
