This is the garbage that was coming out of my mouth until I test drove one
Im now kicking myself for not buying sooner

      • +34

it'll come down to the fact that the majority of the cars on the road will be chinese and people like this will still say that

which is fine.. i mean… die mad bro… like holden and ford

if byd was that bad how come every friggin' 2nd ev out there is a byd

        • +1

If fast food is bad how come most restaurants are fast food lolol

          • +2

@Spets: Your point speaks to the original claim.

Fast food isn't bad - it just depends what you're after, can be great.

For tasty and cheap and filling and quick and lazy it is was the hit. No wonder it made up the majority.

          • -2

            @Spets: Because it's good.

          • +1

@Spets: Like chinese cars - its cheap and chearful
Does the job at minimal expense

        • -1

The same was said about Hyundai when they first came out. How many early Hyundais r still going?

        • +2

          Still early days tonyjzx.
Lets see how BYDs are going when they are 5 years old and more.

Thats when the truth comes out - whatever that will be.

Car brands earn thier reputations on "staying the distance"
Not on new car sales - especially when they are giving them away on finance with no deposit and near zero interest.

        • Probably the same people who think Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons were the most Australian cars because they were built by companies that started in Western white guy countries.
The FACT is when Australia was locally manufacturing cars. The Australian built Toyota Camry had the most Australian made parts sourced from local parts manufacturers of any car assembled in Australia.

Only thing Ford and Holden were good at was marketing cars as Australian when in reality the competition was far more Australian than them.

You too dim to google BYD reviews or jist too ignorant?

    • +41

Are these terrible reviews in the room with us now?

    • +4

Plain lie. A quick google already know it, not to says so many happy owners in facebook group

      • -4

First search result under byd reviews

        https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/byd-australia

Are you really that much of a useless muppet?

        • +3

          Product review. 🤣

          You so silly.

          • -3

@Aureus: You think that's the only place?? How slow are ya????

            • @vash5: It is pretty clear after all of Ozbargain negged your comment you searched high and low for bad reviews and this is the best you can come up with.

              • -1

@Aureus: I couldn't give a shit about neg votes on my comment.. same people happily neg deals because of their politics instead of the deal. So your boo's mean nothing because i see what makes you cheer.

As for reviews themselves.. plenty of sites show negative reviews and more importantly..

BYD faced controversy in Australia in mid-2025 after ABC's Media Watch revealed two motoring journalists' companies had a commercial deal with BYD, arranging and paying for a media drive and content access in exchange for a fee, a relationship not disclosed to their audiences or publishers.

Your either a happy useful tool or just parrots who can't think for himself..

                • +1

@vash5: Lol. Do you move goal posts professionally. 🙄

          • @Aureus: Just one site.. plenty more out there not to mention corrupt behaviour of BYD staging good reviews for money.

        • +1

But you use this website that has terrible reviews: https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/ozbargain

          • -2

@jasong: 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ because thats the only site on the net doing reviews?? 🙈

        • Someone he did not buy a BYD, but give only one star on promuctreview…..

          • -1

@neilwong: Haven't even negged the deal.. would never buy this garbage because of their links to CCP and the lack of history showing the long term reliability of the company or its products.

    • +8

Iv'e got one, i like it (Shark 6), my (f) parter loves it. It's a Hybrid with enough battery thay I filled up with petrol yesterday and before that was an in May, 80% of the time I just charge with my solar off the roof for "free". I live in a small rural village in Tassie, lot of dirt roads and dirt tracks. Goes like stink. Hope to get an battery only verson in a few years as battery tech gets a little better

      • +13

Just a heads up - petrol sitting in the tank for 6 months (May to now) can start to degrade, especially modern fuel with ethanol. Might be worth topping up with fresh fuel more regularly or adding a fuel stabilizer if you're going long periods between fills.

        • Yeah, better not fill in to max (unless long trip). I use 98 (read higher grade has longer expiry? 🤷) but just fill in 1/4 tank once in a few months.

      • PHEV? (Plug in hybrid)

    • -4

Ah yes, BYD… famous for their "terrible" reviews

    • +3

Mods should give us a list of the most downvoted comments ever in the history of ozbargain hahaha

    • +1

Even if it is garbage, my shark was cheaper than and drives way better than any comparable priced ute. It has a 6 year warranty and 8 year battery warranty, so if it does break I'll be fine.

      Was a steal for $56k.

    • +39

BYD owner here. It has its pros and cons like any other car. Way more pros than cons and I would definitely buy another BYD again.

      • +5

As long as the price is right. I got my BYD because it was a price leader

      • What are your biggest pros/cons with the car?

        • +3

Pros: Drives smooth af. Tech is really good. Fit and finish is solid and high quality.
Cons: Drive is not very dynamic. Very floaty. No other cons really for me.

          Mine is the Sealion 6.

          • +3

@rdhupar: I personally like floaty ride, wouldn't even consider that as a con. I don't get people who like former ride (can understand teenage goons liking firmer rides with massive spoilers at the back etc but for a 7 seaters family car, come on)

          • @rdhupar: Sitting in the back, the car gives passenger a headache with all the bumps

            • @Aceboy884: I haven't had any complaints from my passengers. It's a family suv and I don't push it.

          • @rdhupar: I always wonder how’s the fuel consumption will be as it advertised at 2L per 100kms in hybrid without charging.

            • +1

@thomalfa: Don't look at headline figures. When in EV mode, it uses 0 fuel. If you drive it in Hybrid mode it uses fuel like any other hybrid car would around 5-6l/100km.

        • Panel fit could be better, interior build quality is good though. Service and parts network is a WIP

      • +3

Biggest issue and question is service and warranty, did you need any and how do you go about it , if that's all first class then no issues

        • Yeah the service schedule looks like such a rip off compared to say Tesla.

          • +2

@athk: Every other manufacturer apart from Tesla has a service schedule.

        • Had it for almost a year. No issues. Servicing due shortly. They have an online booking system

      • +2

All cars are good in the first few months
Only time will tell with the BYD

      • It was known to have steep depreciation.
If you keep the car for 10+ years then it would be fine.

    • +20

I'm a customer, 2.5 years in an Atto3. It's fine. I don't go around on reddit writing long writeups because that's it, it's fine.

Original tyres sucked, a bit of plastic fell off the inside of the boot door at one point (glue fixed it), the seats have held up very well (I had my doubts originally), the battery is still getting the same range as it did on day one (I'm sure it's somewhat lower, but not noticeably. I can still get 300km real world on a full charge. I have never babied it and don't bother with only charging it to 80% or stuff like that). The software originally was awful, but they've pumped out updates and now it's decent. The cameras are awesome, I have never used the sunroof, the aircon isn't powerful enough, the visibility could be better (but then 360 cameras help). it's just a car with good bits and mediocre bits that's reflective of the price.

Go read the one star reviews on Trustpilot. They're almost entirely about the support rather than the cars themselves, which BYD has acknowledged and have taken it inhouse. My 2 year service went perfectly fine.

      • +1

If it's a LFP battery, you don't have to worry about charging to 80% like you do with an NMC battery. It's just recommended you charge to 100% once a month, also recommended if you won't be using the car for a while (like a holiday) to store it at 50% charge. Hope this helps!

        • +1

I remember watching a video on Youtube where they discussed a research paper determining the validity of LFP's touted ability to charge to 100% with no fear of any sort of degradation. IIRC, the results showed that it did in fact degrade at roughly the same rate as NMC batteries. I never fact checked it myself or followed up with additional discussions/videos on peer-reviewed papers on this subject. I own a BYD Seal and battery degradation isn't a primary concern with regards to my charging behaviour. But I thought it would be interesting to point out the 100% LFP thing may or may not be entirely true.

        • -5

That's BS, charging to 100% is the worst thing you can do to an LFP battery despite what you say.

I own an LFP tesla btw

          • +1

@Brick50: Wouldn't charging to 100% be a prudent thing to do as a form of battery calibration? This is simply due to the nature of lithium battery chemistry, how they're packed, and how discharging works. Forbidding anyone to charge to 100% would give false readings on the estimated range, wouldn't it? Not that it's a huge deal for most people, but still.

            • +1

@shiny1: cells stay so well balanced I don't think it makes any material difference

"Cycling near the top of charge (75%–100% SOC) is detrimental to LFP/graphite cells. Our results show a correlation between the average SOC of battery operation and capacity fade rate, meaning that the lower the average SOC, the longer the lifetime, in these 2500 h of testing. The average SOC was found to be the most critical factor influencing capacity fade for LFP cells, over the factors of temperature, depth of discharge, electrolyte salt choice or graphite choice."

That study was funded by tesla I believe

      • +6

Sad to hear about aircon. Does anyone know which EVs have the best aircon? It's a very under-reviewed feature

    • +8

Owned the Sealion 7 for about a month now and it's been an amazing machine. The whole family loves it. The interior has been well designed, decent sound system, acceleration that will smoke most cars on the road, and a nice big infotainment screen that makes navigation so much easier than looking at those tiny screens.

      • Performance or premium, there's a 10k difference just keen to see what someone like yourself opted for?

        • The cars are very similar. The interior is identical in both versions. The only differences I believe is the AWD, better acceleration, and slightly bigger rims on the performance model. Also the brake calipers are red on the performance model but I don't know if they're actually better than the premium model ones.

I went for performance mainly because I wanted that 4.5s 0-100, it fits my driving style. I also wanted AWD as it's safer and you have "some" off road capability.

          • @icarus255: Thanks for the reply. Yeah it's 10k more and what you mentioned are some of the better things on it. I've seen more towing capacity as well.

If it comes to it definitely opting for performance

            • +1

@pandaman: I think if you drive like most normal people then you don't need the 4.5s acceleration. For me it was definitely worth the stretch. The premium model is 6.7s and that's still pretty decent considering most normal cars are going to be in the 8-10s range.

The bigger wheels and AWD might make a slightly better ride experience but you wouldn't be taking it off road beyond maybe some compact sand.

I think the Premium model is much better value unless you drive like me and you want the slightly better looking wheels and painted brake callipers.

Take both for a spin and see how you feel.

The efficiency is questionable. Did you also consider Model Y before buying it?

        • Yawn… I think I'll pass on the BYD vs Tesla debate today. I think Teslas are boring but that's questionable too.

    • I've got a BUD, i like it, my parter loves it. Great value, good car, no wonder traditional brands are crapping themselves.

      • +1

        Whats a BUD?????

      • Is the BUD light?

    • Did you read that in anti-china group? There are many byd owner groups in australia, and vast around the world

    • I took my mum to buy her beloved Toyota RAV4, she drove it and loved it. but before placing the order, I wanted her to try the Sealion 6 too, and I also wanted to check out the Shark 6 for myself at the BYD's showroom. since we were already there, I asked her to give the Shark 6 a go as well.

She said, “Utes are bogan tradie cars.” But after I convinced her to try it, she came back saying, “I want the Shark 6 and nothing else.”
before locking it in, I made her test the Hilux and the new Kia Tasman just to be sure. The family loves the shark 6 and my sister ordered one in black for herself.

      • +8

Why would a non-tradie "mum" need a car as big as Shark 6? It takes up so much parking space.

        • Why does anyone 'need' a dual cab ute? Just like the non-tradie "mum", its just fashion.

  • +2

Shut up and take my money!

    • +18

Sure I will pm you my bank details.

      • +2

Hey that's not the wallet inspector…

  • +1

without even doing the sums in my head i'm guessing you will be paying way more in interest given the typical bank loan than the $3k cashback

    • +5

$54,990 in Qld for the base model.
At 36 months principle and interest repayments at 1.88%, with $0 balloon, you'll pay $1,608 in interest, plus annual fees.

      =CUMIPMT(0.0188/12, 12*3, 54990, 1,36,0)

      • +24

You want me to do what in where?

        • Happy ending

      • On roads are another $2,434.10

      • +2

Doesn’t the 1.88% include fees since it’s a comparison rate?

Not sure about the $3000 but if the cashback offer wasn’t available, you’d make more money putting it in a savings account.

      • Anyone know what the actual terms of the loan are? The comparison rate is for 30k over five years but this deal is for the three year term. Anything close to 1.88% would be very compelling.

    • +2

How? What rate % is a typical bank loan?

      • ask your bank but its multiples of 1.88 lol

      • Around 6%

      • +3

What rate % is a typical bank loan?

Variable rate home loans are in the 5%-6% range, the best fixed rates just under 5%.

So if you took this money out of your offset account, even at the lower end (5%), just one year of interest would cost you $2749.50. So it's better to leave the money in your offset account, take the loan, and pay back the BYD loan over the full three years - unless the loan has huge fees attached.

  • What is the purpose of comparison rate? Is it the rate they will charge on the loan?

    • +11

It takes into account all the fees and stuff so you can compare with other loans without doing a page of math

      • So interest rate is similar to market rate!!!

    • Not financial advice, just my opinion:

A loan 'comparison rate' is an effective % rate—taking into account the core interest payment, any predetermined chanes in the interest rate (e.g. a promo period expiring), plus all expected fees / charges, throughout the life of the loan. It's done using standardised parameters (loan amount, loan period, repayment schedule, etc). As these parameters are standardised, you can compare comparison rates for multiple loans on the market, and be reasonably confident about the comparison.

The important thing is, your loan parameters may differ from those used for he comparison rate calculation. Maybe one loan will work out better for you because the fee structure works better with how long you plan to keep the loan for, how often you plan to repay, etc. It's…basically expected that your effective rate will be different from the comparison rate.

Comparing comparison rates will fish out dodgy hidden fees etc hidden behind attractive advertised interest rates, but it can still happen. There is nothing better than actually going through the conditions of loans and calculating how well it's going to work for you specifically. If you're not going to do that, for most people most of the time, comparing comparison rates is the next best thing.

  • the new B8 looks crazyy but im gonna wait for the xiaomi yu7 max
