I'm a Fuji fan, but haven't bought anything since 2022 due to the insane price increases. Even at these prices I feel like there's many other options, for example Nikon z f

same. Haven't bought anything since covid.

    • Same, but someone is

The autofocus (AF) performance of the current Fujifilm line remains a major limitation, they keep releasing more cameras with higher and higher asking prices but made little advancements. The Sony A7CII, priced a bit over the $2,000 mark, offers significantly better AF, especially for tracking subjects like children and pets.

Sony JPEGs may lack the "Fuji colours" (mostly means they aren't as instantly 'beautiful' when sent straight to your phone), but the focus reliability on the Sony is a massive upgrade when compared to the unreliable tracking on Fujifilm cameras.

Been tempted by the Nikon ZF, but have way too much gear already.

If you must have the latest and greatest, this isn't too bad. But like @Perrino said new fuji price increases have been insane and a quick skim on eBay shows you can get a used X-T5 body only for ~2k, or an X-E3 for ~1k and spend the rest on a bunch of lenses if you want the form factor.

    • no weather sealing. if someone is wondering

bought my x-t3 from Camera House in 2022 for $1300 something, brand new. that's the price I'd agree to pay for a crop body. X-t3 was weather sealed like tank though

      • The AF is still good? Also do you feel its heavy and not convenient for say overseas trip (not young person anymore).

        • tbh I am selling it. I got EOS R from Ted's Cameras for funny money and it's not much bigger while being full frame and much better focus

  • On the fuji topic, does film sim really (but i dont like doing post) necessary and we use/ get into it continuously or this is a one time thing?

    • My personal anecdote (X-E3) is that it's neat when I can't be bothered to edit the Raws afterwards, the preloaded sims are good enough for socials. The neat part is I can quickly transfer my trip photos to my phone and send them to my partner/post online between transits, without the need to edit really. The other upside is you can cook up your own sims with heaps of examples online (FujiXWeekly). To be honest, you could probably do similar presets with other cameras, just without the Fujifilm "vibe" I guess.

    • Film sim is good enough.

I’ve made my own LR preset that I use for 100% of all my shots, all I do is select photos I like, crop, adjust WB and exposure (I shoot -0.3 EV most of the time to avoid clipping) after I slap my preset on.

Post processing honestly is 5-10 mins for 50-100 photos, spending time mostly to crop if required.

FYI for the OZB gang, look into “macked app” if you want LR for life….

I’ll never pay for an adobe sub, and dark table has never worked well.

      • @ozbargainhunter400 macked.. any for pc/windows?

      • You can crack lightroom on mobile using Vanced. Gives you premium ai features/presents too that your normally pay for

X-E4 with 27mm kit was being sold for $1,400 in June 2022. It's difficult to justify the price for X-E5 compared to that. Good camera through. If you don't care about the size X-T5 might be a better value which you can pick up for a very similar price.

I wanted xt3 but camera plus lens battery etc would be around 950grams thats heavy for person with small hand like me

      • What are your thoughts on X-M5? That may be another smaller, lighter option to consider.

        • +1

I haven't held the XM5 myself but I've seen the comparison photos, I think it'd be too small, not small enough to fit in your pocket but small enough to be awkward to hold, would definitely need a grip even with small hands. I'd personally lean towards a XT30II/XT30III instead, as I much prefer a tilt screen, and it has a flash too, both don't have IBIS.

XT5 if you need the IBIS

I got X-M5 recently and it's amazing for my needs. Small means easy to travel with, though I had to get a handgrip. Lack of EVF isn't really a big deal for me either (even if I thought I would have problems but it turns out that the screen itself is enough)

  • Seems like for this money you could get a good full frame camera with definitely better image quality

    • What would be a good option for a full frame compact body (budget can stretch - a7CR as one example)? I am coming back to a dedicated camera many years after not having to lug around a D800 with 3 lens/flash/tripod (which was before having a family). I am not keen to carry the same amount of stuff ever again!

      • What sort of photography do you do? Landscape, nature, street, travel etc

        • Mostly for travel with family.

          • @ymmf: Depending on how much gear you can afford and tolerate taking, I would get a travel zoom like sigma 20-200mm and a fast prime like 24, 35 or 50mm 1.4 and a Sony a7c2. 35mm 1.4 would be the most versatile. Don't get the a7cr, Ive had both the a7c2 and a7cr and the a7cs is faster and has better AF, the extra cost and resolution is not worth it in my opinion. This would be a very compact travel kit

            • @qvinto: You answered exactly my question on c2 vs cr! Much appreciated!

              • @ymmf: if the a7cr had a tilt screen it wouldve made enough difference for me, plus dual card slot and it would be chiefs kiss.

but it's just the bigger sensor which doesn't always mean better depending on use case, spend the difference on lenses instead, much better investment.

that said i have seen some used a7cr listed for not much more than the a7cii, yeah larger sensor = more cropping can be nice, but you'd also have to deal with larger file sizes which means more time spent waiting for transfers and more money on cards, the increases are not noticeable at all when sharing images and would only matter to snobs like myself that like to pixel peep (bloody zooming in after every shot) and I still don't think a7cr is worth looking at.

      • unless you are willing to settle with smaller format ie. APS-C or MFT.. you still have to lug around kilos.

overall mirrorless is lighter but a proper "setup" will still be a few kgs

People that get Fuji aren’t doing it for value, it’s the feel.

      Source: xpro3 / f100 daily.
I have Sonys for streaming though.

      • touché!

      • it’s the feel.

They don't even feel right lol.

i too have the X-Pro 2 but I think my Z6 is a lot more robust than the X-Pro 2.

        • I mean that’s subjective.

I own all the big name cameras besides the red dot. I prefer Fuji for digital. That’s just me.

For film it’s Nikon or Pentax.

    • Great point and absolutely. Like one of the other comments said. People who buy the Fuji they don't buy it for the value. Canon R8 is under $1.8k on Amazon right now and that would be capable of doing most professional work with Canon's proven auto focus system whilst I don't think anyone would be using X-E5 for any professional work. Fuji's autofocus on their cameras is too slow and hit and miss with object detection.

  • Am currently looking for a X-E5, and have noticed that Amazon is cheaper than most places. Is it a grey import stock or its AUS delivered stock ?

    • If it’s Shipped and Sold by Amazon, it’s Australian stock.
