MEGALOPOLIS (2024) Movie Rental $2.99 @ Apple TV

31

a recent release which seemed very hyped in the trailer, but I thought it was just weird and vague.
it's also available on Mubi (Free trial or $14.99 a month) but not on any other streams. but if you don't have a list of stuff to watch on mubi it's $2.99 to watch at apple.

someone recommended it to me because the director is Frank Copolla who was the director of the famous movie God father apparently.

but this was a odd movie which I felt was longer then it needed to be. first it's set in the future, where things are a bit different but not as futuristic as you expected, then sometimes they talk to each other by breaking out in song (even though it's not a musical). the main character is meant to be some kind of genius, but he comes across as kind of ordinary for a billionaire genius. if you just take the movie for surface value, it's not that exciting. ok he's a genius who wants to build a utopia, and????
maybe I'm not getting it's "methaphorical" meaning. but sorry I'm not smart enough can only judge it based on the surface value.

The city of New Rome faces the duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist in favor of a Utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, with her loyalty divided between her father and her beloved.

  • Is this the new Kylo ren movie with a wooden sword? 😅

  • +1

3 dollars to own would be a deal.

Video Ezy and their $2 Tuesday is a better deal for a rental.

    • Yes, if only Wikipedia didn't report "2018 and 2019 saw the last few remaining Video Ezy stores close down".

      • +1

I've got a few weeklies to return by Friday, I'll have to see if the shop has Megalopolis. Will report back.

Video Ezy and their $2 Tuesday is a better deal for a rental

      in 1999

    • ok fair enough that's your opinion.

but did you watch the movie? what did you think about it? same as what I typed in deal?

if so but you enjoyed it please explain to me as simple as possible some of the important parts which I did not understand because I could only judge it on surface value. and to me it was pretty much a 2+ hour non movie. 😂

      • I've got 5 DVDs we gotta watch before Friday when they're due back, but I did mean to catch this one, your post reminded me. I'll suss it sometime soon and hit you back, I haven't heard great things unfortunately:/

        • oh ok no it's ok don't need to worry I thought you might have already saw it.

well if you do decide to get back on ozb hopefully it's not that much trouble and you can just say "yeah more or less what you thought".
to kind of sum it up, obvously there was a lot of effort put into the movie by the director, but it comes across not very movie like, as in not what I expect from a movie. like the story is there, but the moments are not well timed and feels disjointed (is it trying to be "genre-less"??) , I did not really feel some kind of build up and connection with the characters. it was just very vague and bizzare imo.

I really liked the trailer when I saw it, which didn't reveal much but made you think you were in for a fantastic wild ride.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: I haven't seen the trailer, might go in blind. Though, last time I did that with an Adam Driver movie, I got The Last Jedi. So maybe I shouldn't lol.

  • Movie that bankrupted the director because it was so bad. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/23/fashion/francis-ford-copp…

The paywall on that article tried to bankrupt me, too!

Holy moly, I read the blurb on the original link but am very glad to have read the actual article.

Hard to feel bad for someone who's been bankrupt multiple times, keeps borrowing / getting lent money, keeps going bankrupt, and then to stay afloat has to sell off some of his watches, one of which ALONE was starting bid in the 7 figures.

I hope you live long enough to go bankrupt one more time, you hack. Rich people problems I guess.

Tell you what, if I had a million dollars, just the one, I wouldn't just be set for life, my (profanity) kids (provided they have half a brain as they get older) would do pretty bloody well off it too.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I guess he really believes in himself hehe

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I don’t know if that’s as fair for movie producers/directors. The nature of the movie business is a gamble and in Copolla’s case he bets on himself … sometimes he wins and sometimes he loses. It does seem to be for the sake of the art though rather than churning out crappy money spinners and he does actually work for his money.

  • n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm - can you explain the meaning of your username? Is it a reference to something?

    • +1

saw your other comment asking. um no there is no reference.

you googled it? I guess I'm famous now. 😂

just a edgy username like anyone else online, I just tried to make it as edgy as possible. neck entry refers to a type of body suit where it's just one single piece of latex so you have enter your whole body through the neck. the other two words are just random which I added on which I thought would likely trigger people. like abortions related to orgasms. aborting an orgasm when gooning/edging. idk.

  • Truly an awful awful movie.
Coppola my goat is officially washed

  • So go back to the cluuuuuuub.

  • +1

Paying money for this is a crime lol

  • It would be great to have the ratings included in such "deals" descriptions, like IMDB, rotten tomatoes.

    • I don't go by rating at all tbh. just personally I have found things don't align.

but in this movie's case. yes the ratings basically sum up how I felt about it as a movie in general.

      • It does not always align, but I don't remember a movie with IMDB below 5 that I really liked.
So it's still useful as an initial filter, it helps to save quite some time.

  • forgot to type in post.

but I actually half posted this, expecting some comments to tell me "no you didn't get it… " and explain parts of the movie a bit. because I could only judge it on the surface and found it mostly vague.

  • The only movie I have ever walked out on in the cinema.

    And I saw Movie 43.

    • aw damn you paid for it and walked out??

I paid for it so I watched it all the way to the end. 🤭

    • Still can't believe Hugh Jackman agreed to appear in that movie.

  • If you were unfortunate enough to see this in the cinema, there's a scene where someone comes into the theatre with a microphone and pretends to be someone from the press asking Cesar a question. I remember feeling a sense of relief, as I thought we were being evacuated. Nope. Just more insanity.
