Following the two full directs on this, it's shaping up to be a very impressive game, even more so than Mario Kart World. I got to play it hands on at PAX and was very impressed too.

Below is a summary of what we know about it - with some help from AI (sorry - but I think it's a good sign there's so much to talk about I couldn't be bothered typing it all out off memory).

  • Top Ride returns (top-down racing, 8-player online / 4-player local)
  • Road Trip story mode combining Air Ride, City Trial & Top Ride events
  • Paddock online lobby with emotes, music, and free movement
  • Swap Relay races (swap machines each lap or pass controller locally)
  • Transform Star machine switches between flying and bike modes

They really are just conditioning me to buy digital at this point.
An extra $10 to never misplace or loose the game card and another $10 to not have to swap it into the card reader.
Going to have to hand in the OzB card soon at this point.

Yeah my policy for digital games is online multiplayer games I’ll play frequently all digital for quick play, and physical for single player games I’ll play through and sell when I’m done.

I did go physical for Kirby air riders though as not sure if I’ll enjoy it

      • Fair point, Mario kart World was kind on underwhelming…So I'm hedging my bets on Air Riders, hopefully it is amazing and everything MKW should have been.

      • That’s a good policy since the biggest risk of digital is the game being taken offline and if that happens multiplayer will be unavailable anyway.

    • lose*

  • I hope I come around to like it as well….without trying it yet - it currently feels looks too marshmallowy sweet to me.

    • Have you played The Forgotten Land? The Switch 2 version is even better. Such a good game. Fingers crossed Air Raiders is just as good.

Is this game supposed to be like a mash up of smash brothers x battle carts - like where you battle each other or is it purely just a racing simulator with battling elements - similar to Mario Kart ?

    • Had a go at PAX.

There was a race mode and a battle mode.

      • Any thoughts on your [brief] experience with it?

        • +1

The race mode was pretty fun. Fast paced, but with automatic acceleration so could feel a bit basic.

I didn't enjoy the battle mode, but I don't I properly understood what I was supposed to be doing.

Probably not a buy for me based on my limited experience, but that's more a preference thing than a reflection on the game's quality. By comparison, what I played of Pokemon A-Z and the new Metroid convinced me to buy them.

For those unsure there is a global test over the next two weekends with lessons playable outside those times

      Great tip!

    • Just tried the game via the lessons mode.

Yup, I am afraid it’s ok but nothing worth the asking price.

  • i'll be interested to see how it compares to sonic crossworlds

I had this game on GameCube and from memory it was average.

    • +1

No, you had Kirby Air Ride on the GameCube, this is an entirely new game released 22 years after that one.

      • -1

Oh nice. Air Ride was average from memory though so I wonder if this new game will be any better?

  • No exclusives have sold me on getting the Switch 2, and I don’t think this one will, even though it LOOKS to be a VERY good game, possibly winning some awards.

    • Not even Bananza?

      • Not even Bananza, and especially not the DLC.
Still waiting on an OLED and/or limited edition that I like.

Looks too meh. Not buying this after MKW letdown.

  • For people who were not aware, the director of Kirby Air Riders: the honorable Masahiro Sakurai, has 2 "Nintendo Directs" dedicated to this game and explaining every aspect of this game from top to bottom. It will answer many questions you might have and you will see the passion he has for the game he is making. In these videos he geuinely seems like a kid telling his school friends about a new fun game he came up with.

Sakurai's passion for gaming is a breath of fresh air after seeing soulless AAA and trend-chasing slop being churned out from major companies with microtransactions and battle passes slapped on for a cash grab. He simply wants to make games he thinks is fun and will spend a lot of time explaining to everyone else why he thinks it's fun. The game isn't for me personally, but nonetheless I loved watching him talk about it for almost 2 hours.

      Okay….

This Kirby marshmallow riders is UNLIKELY to ‘Sora’ to the perceived heights of smash bros. This one feels espcially overrated.

  • +1

This basic game shouldn't cost more than $50, do not be a fool into buying this overhyped and overrated BS.

    • +1

Yeah that's my problem with it, it looks fun but probably not 90 bucks. gonna hold off as I think Nintendo will soften with pricing if they can't pick up impulse buys anymore

  • For 1st party games - I feel Metroid Prime 4 is where it will be at….despite being an upgraded switch 1 game.

MKW is good but a little underwhelming (maybe after it matures with updates) and DKB is also good but not that epic.

Actually, I recall reading that all these three games started life on switch 1 - so it appears ‘from the ground up’ switch 2 games are yet to come.

Zero Regrets is open to all current EB World members, for any games you’ve traded on your EB World account after 10 September, 2018.

The game I traded is now on sale for cheaper than the trade value I got?
No worries! If the current Preowned sale price is cheaper than the trade value you got when you traded, then that’s all you’ll pay.

Our staff can check for stock in other stores, our Warehouse, and through our Home Direct service. In the unlikely event that no stock is available, check back with us at a later date.

  • Does anybody know if the Target voucher can be used for pre-orders or only once game has launched? Reason I ask is JB perks vouchers cannot be used for pre-order. Unclear from the Target T&C if it is possible or not.

    Thanks.

Target newsletter voucher can be used with preorders.
