Great call out. I have been hearing about this feedback for these straps.. I hope @garmin does something and fixes these issues..

the problem is that they did fix the issue with the HRM Pro + which has an updated toolless battery compartment. It evenly pushes down the waterproofing gasket when it's installed, however, because of our laws, we can't buy it here because it's got a tool-less coin battery in it.

Garmin did do something about it, it's called the HRM-Pro Plus, but its not available for retail in Australia, since its doesn't meet Australia's requirements for cell batteries to not be accessible without using a tool (ie to protect kids from swallowing batteries).
I use a HRM-Pro Plus (ordered from Amazon UK), and it did, indeed solve the battery problem for me, but now the strap itself is falling apart after slightly more than 2 years, which is ok, but not great considering the electronics still work perfectly.
Now the newer HRM 200 and 600 solve both problems by being (a) rechargeable, and (b) detachable from the strap (both introducing their own new issues no doubt).
So yeah, as @frkino said, this one has some significant battery issues. Personally, for the price, I'd be getting the HRM 400 instead - currently $149 retail on Garmin's website (but never pay retail for Garmin products ;) or wait for a special on the HRM 600 if you really want the extra metrics. Just my 2c worth :)

Avoid buying these. Apart from the quality issue, the strap isn't replaceable. Polar H10 is a good alternative. If you prefer Garmin, there are the Garmin 200 and Garmin 600

The 200 looks good tbh, Polar I assume wouldnt integrate with the garmin app tho? already in the ecosystem with my watch is my only reasoning to stick with it

HR10 has Bluetooth/ANT+ support. You should be able to log the HR in Garmin connect. However, other features might not have tight integration

The Polar won't give you L/R balance, or vertical oscillation, but otherwise works fine for running and cycling. I don't know how water resistant the H10 is, so best to check that if you want something for swimming as well.

Agree - my Magene was doing great until I put it through the washing machine but until then had no issues with it. Ended up replacing it with a XOSS for the rechargeable battery (though I think some Magene models might have that too now?) and that's also been good.

I have had a terrible experience with this HR strap, I have replaced it with a Polar H10 and never looked back.
The HRM Pro starts off good, but my first one died after about 7 months, it took a further month for Garmin's terrible support to acknowledge that it was dead and made me pay postage for the replacement unit (Which I think it illegal under ACL). The replacement died after another 6 months…
It is impossible to clean the strap properly, so it stinks after a while.

Return to base warranty means you return it. They will then cover freight costs to return the item back. Please show where this is illegal under ACL. This isn't a bulky item which is unreasonable to return. Some companies cover the return, but are not required to.

Excellent HR strap. Had it for over a year, no issues. Battery replacement can be tricky, need to make sure the batt compartment lid goes back same way it was before, otherwise won't be waterproof.

Been using a COOSPO brand HRM for a while now, primarily for rowing and biking and would recommend (also under half the cost of the Garmin). Much more accurate than my Garmin watch which might as well think I'm sitting on the couch watching a movie when I'm rowing.

I just had to replace the battery in my HRM Pro after approx 14 months of owning it. Like a lot of people, I was worried about having a useless chest strap after replacing the battery but all seems well with it. I'd wait on a discount for the newer Garmin HRM 200 & 600 if I was in the market for a Garmin heart rate monitor now, but I'm one of the rare people that hasn't had any trouble replacing the battery on the HRM Pro. Obviously YMMV.

Then there is the Magene from alliexpres, $22 never missed a beat in three years and thousands of K's ,1000 hours on one button cell , just need to cut the strap between the clips otherwise moisture will interfere with the reading. Is there anything the Garmin does that makes it worth the extra , genuine question just want to know why anyone would pay that much.

Another recent Magnet convert. My Pro strap disintegrated after a few years and I can't justify the extra $$$ Garmin expect.
The Magene did exactly what it says on the tin, monitor your heart rate!

Just as another data point I was worried about the battery stories and I'm on my third battery no issues. Weirdly my second one didn't last long so I thought the whole unit had died and just before I threw it out I changed the battery and its fine again.
