Given the choice between a facsimile of a playable item that is just an inanimate object or the same object being actually playable - I'm going with the one that can can actually be played.
Though I can appreciate the visual appeal of an 8-bit system reduced to blocks - but it's a tad dull for an art piece.

But the mods thus far like the kickstarter one are pretty absurdly overpriced. It's like $5 worth of hardware.

I think the stock is huge and not limited which is great. Could see another price drop before christmas. Wouldnt mind another one to do the Gameboy mod
I have a few options up my sleeve, I ended up with 3 units due to a stuff up when it originally came out (was posted on here when K-Mart had stock before the official release, I did an online delivery order vs click and collect as I assumed my c&c would get cancelled like it happened to a few others. The delivery took a bit longer to arrive (was sent from a store I live a short distance from) as it went from Victoria, to South Australia, to WA, then back to South Australia and finally in Victoria. As I assumed I wasn't going to see the original delivery, I pounced when OzB posted a deal about the Game Boy and Targets special price for it. Then I read about the Game Boy mod and I went to Big W when they had a special price (which I used another gift card on - so it was only a $50 spend), thus I had 2. But the original K-Mart order, did get delivered to me in the end. Thus I now have 3 Game Boys (still boxed - waiting to decide on what to do, I'd love to combine all 3 and make a SUPER GAME BOY design, but the issue with that would be no clear perspex for the screen).
Gameboy DS with two screens haha. One would make an awesome, lucky Christmas gift.

You can now also buy mods online to turn this Lego Game Boy into a playable device like the original. There are several mods in the works by various developers but one of the first you can buy now is currently on Kickstarter. Search for Brickboy.

Saw the price (250 odd) and figured the <$10 game boys I have, that play more machines too, are probably good enough.
If they could have got it down to a hundred bucks (plus the Lego kit) I'd have bitten tbh

I agree its a little pricey but that's because I believe, if not mistaken, it is the first mod in the market for the Lego Game Boy.
I think once more developers go to market with their mods, price should come down a bit. However, the others are currently in the works with nothing solid yet, so it may take some time.
If you want to support a local Aussie developer, Natalie the Nerd is also apparently working on one (https://blog.nataliethenerd.com/i-turned-the-lego-game-boy-i…). She's also calling it a brick boy, and not to be mistaken with BrickBoy that is currently on Kickstarter. Not sure if she will go commercial-kickstarter method or will provide as DIY guide.

Can you still buy the original Game Boy?
Yes on eBay or marketplace or from a retro shop. You can also get mods to give them modern lcd screens as well as micro SD cartridge adapters to hold all of your games.

@BargainBobcat: What are the chances though. Usually mostly jocks socks and we spoil the kids instead. Always said just want something with thought behind it. Such as painting. Coffee cup with engraving. T-shirt with kids handprint. Those things. Managed to get store credit from where she got it from.
