    Bought flint 3, ~$200

    • +27

Flint 2 is better overall though.

      • Doesn’t it lack WiFi 7?

        • +5

Yes but 2 has a stronger CPU, better through put with VPN, sqm and heavy routing etc More community support for 2 as well

If you need wifi 7 and all 2.5gb lan ports, go for the flint 3

        • +1

How many devices do you have that can benefit from Wi-Fi 7?

          • +2

@topherboi: If you have even one device that can benefit, it is still worth it.

Like, how many devices do you have that can benefit from 1000/100 or 2000/200, technically 500/50 is enough for most families.

          • @topherboi: All of them? At least it has the 6 GHz band, so even if a device only supports WiFi 6E (which is pretty much on all my client devices that have WiFi), it can at least operate on that separate band.
It’s also good futureproofing for MLO.
But I wouldn’t buy either Flint device, I’d either get a BPi R4 or an x86 fanless PC with 10GbE ports and an M.2/miniPCIe slot for WiFi/cellular.

            • +2

@FujinShu: So you knew that it lacked Wi-Fi 7 before even asking.

      • +1

I have Flint 2 as well and I can confirm that the Flint 2 is better performer overall and for Wireguard VPN compared to Flint 3 according to other users who has both.

      • -1

CPU is not a determining factor for a router, I have 2000/200 and need all 2.5GBE backhaul as well as tri-band wifi 7.

        • It's not a factor for switching.

  • +3

    Great first post! Excellent value

    • +3

It probably won't get any better than this deal.

      • +1

It will. There are 3 inevitable things: death, taxes, and router markdowns.

        • +1

Time is money though…. You'll wait ages just to save $13, besides it is sub 150 if you use cashback or Paypal.

    • +1

I dont think thats why you were negged to oblivion bro

    • +3

      got negged to oblivion

And yet here we are again.

  • +1

Paid AUD $147 with PayPal and 28degrees. ATL i think. Thanks

    • I feel ripped off paying $159 now!

      What is 28degrees?

  • +3

Is this same with amazon au stock? No difference?

    • +1

Also wondering this, particularly in respect to available bands/frequencies

      • +2

No locks on these. You can set your region.

    • +1

  • Purchased, thank you!

  • Where is the PayPal deal?

    • Showed it to me at checkout. Also shows under the AliExpress Saver part. This is on the app btw.

  • hope the Flint 3e come out before black friday

    • Probably not happening… it is currently under beta testing still.

    • Coming out tomorrow night based on email I got.

      • yea just got my email , thought it would be alot cheaper it currently same price as the 3

  • +1

    Total: $152.84

  • +5

I love my Flint 2, an absolute weapon. Maxed out speeds over WiFi is previously unheard of for me as I was using lesser brands.

    • AU plug sold out, too bad they don’t just ship all the plug converters

      • They do according to the youtube reviews and unboxings I watched

  • +2

Banger router, once you setup sqm qos over wifi you can get +1 or even +0ms at 20m distance can play competitive games online with no latency issues

    • More info on how to setup sqm please?

      • +10

Go network > Sqm Qos > Set download speed 90% of your isp speeds ( i set at 120mbps even with 500mbps conenction ) > upload speed my isp is 50mbps i set to 35. make sure you turn off hardware acceleration also.
Queue discipline tab: Queue discipline: cake, Setup script: Piece_of_cake.qos
Link layer adaption tab: Link layer set to ethernet with overhead. Per Packet overhead set to 44. Maximum packet size i have on 1492 but you can keep 1500.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, go into system > advanced settings on your main router admin panel, these settings are in the Luci interface.

        • +1

does this increase the overhead compared to changing nothing? im the only user so qos is pointless, just wanted to know before changing stuff

          • +1

@Spazzwan: If you're gaming over wifi qos is not pointless, when i don't have it on when i'm downloading movies etc my latency is like +45ms. as for overhead i don't think it really increases it might have to do a bit more research into that but i dont think it does.

          • +4

@Spazzwan: It basically caps your speed locally, where resends of packets are near instantaneous.

Otherwise if you max the connection, the ISP, and you need to resend packets, you have —ms of extra transmit and retransmit times.

            Its buffer bloat.

If you NEVER do 2 things at once on your internet, theres not much point, but setting it to your internet speed (rather than just below) still keeps pings steadier in my testing.

            • @MasterScythe: oky ty for the info. i get A rating on this so likely pointless to touch anything https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat?test-id=855d6e2b-…

              • +4

@Spazzwan: Yeah so if youd like to get that stability down to 0-1ms, that's easy.

But unless you're gaming competitively, then 11ms of latency spike isnt high, you're right.

                • -1

@MasterScythe: My old router was running merlin. Without cake I got +29ms. With cake +2ms, but I upgraded to gigabit so it couldn't keep up; bufferbloat back to 29ms at 300-400mbps. Now I built my own openwrt router with flint 2 as wireless back haul. I get +1ms at Gigabit. I heard flint2 is only good to around gigabit, but my diy router should be good to 2.5gbe

          • +1

@Spazzwan: If you use cake, it is still pointful. Qos is per ip, whereas cake is per packet. That means even on the same computer, your computer could be spamming YouTube and gaming, a big download and voice packets at the same time, and it will make sure that they are interleaved nicely.

        • +1

thanks for the guide , was helpful

  • +1

Waiting for sub $140 to pull trigger. Hopefully end of the month

    • I'm waiting for $5.73

      • Gl with that 😃

    • you can get lower with cashback site?

    • +2

Paid $152 with paypal (extra $12 discount), then received a $27 cashback via topcashback = $125!

      • Same $125 pulled the trigger, I was looking at spending in the $130 range $140 Max.

  • Got my shopback tracked at 17.5%. $25.47

    • +3

      TopCashback 20%… I got tracked 28, so after cashback it’s only 119—what a steal!

      • +1

Only hearing about topshopback today, I'm not a true ozbargainer.

        • +1

          👀

        • Still a great deal… thanks for posting.

      • Spewing I got tcb also but ended at $125 😭

  • +1

Paypal discount is not applying to my order. Paying in AUD and selected Paypal as the payment method. What am I missing? Here's what I see as the final total

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/24434/125293/screensho…

    • +1

Same I purchased with paypal, but looking at the transaction history on my paypal account, the discount hasnt been applied.

    • I can't update the post, but this is a similar paypal deal.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/932584

    • Update: Worked when using app

  • Total: $151.13 for me. Plus 20% cashback at TCB if it tracks. Bargain, thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP, purchased one.

  • I'm running an old Asus RT-AC68U. For wifi home coverage I have 2 x Unifi WAP's. Is there any benefit to me upgrading the Asus for this if I'll be switching off the wifi anyway?

    • i'm upgrading from RT-AC68U as well. I saw some comments before that wifi range is much better than 68U.

    • depends on a number of things.. internet speed, number of devices, do you need VLANs and do you know enough to configure VLANs, firewall etc… If you just do basic web surfing and streaming youtube/netflex then AC68U should be ok.

If I had 1/2 Unifi WAPs, I would get a mini pc with 2.5Gb LANs.

      • Thoughts on a UCG if wifi isn't needed? (done by WAPs)

    • +2

I've been looking at upgrading my DSL-AC68U. I don't use the DSL part nor the wifi (use WAPs for that). I've been looking at the Unifi UCG which goes for about $200. It doesn't have wifi but I don't need that anyway and I'd rather not pay for functionality that I don't need. Since you hjave Unifi WAPs maybe look into getting a UCG?

    • I came from ac86u which is similar.
Wifi range much better, my 5ghz hits my garage and I get 30-40mbps, previously was only getting 2.4ghz down there and 7mbps, with frequent disconnects.

For pure routing, if you're using cake sqm, flint2 handles gigabit, whereas ac86u (and therefore 68u since they're similar) falter around 300mbps

  • It wouldn't let me do pay in 4, but got it for $152 outright via pay pal

  • +1

Got it for $152 and then just received email with the additional $27 top cashback.

Thanks for the post. Great deal.

  • +2

topcashback is ineligible if used vouchers to pay

  • How's the range on this. Would it have any trouble with a ~20 metre long terraced property? My current deco mesh set struggles a surprising amount and I want to be able to stream to my Nvidia shield from the front office without random buffering.

    • I don't know much about Deco but can you manually select a wifi-channel that is not congested/overlapping with your neighbours?

My flint2 is placed in middle of a terrace home 30m long, no issues with buffering from the front or back.

      • Thanks! I've ordered the flint so we'll see how it goes. Have tried changing channels and such but at this point I think it's just the decos starting to give up the ghost.

  • Thanks OP, been watching for a deal on this one for a while. 👍

  • Does this have an AU plug?

    • Yes if selected.

      • $7 extra and oos

  • No longer available.

  • I've been running a Flint 2 for the past month and every couple of days the 5G wifi just dies. Have to power cycle to get it back.

On top of that, my TV loses the password (wtf?) each time this happens meaning I have to enter it again.

Bought mine through Amazon who refuse to give a replacement, only a refund, so now I have to buy a replacement and then get the original router refunded.

    • I've had no issues like that, maybe just a bad one. Owned two - Flint 1 and Flint 2.

    • Your 5G, do you have it at 160Mhz and a DFS channel?
Try to play with the settings, like use 80Mhz and don't select a DFS channel.

      • -1

Yes I have 160 MHZ on and a DFS channel selected.

Would seem a bit silly if I have to disable features to make it work, no?

        • Your area probably causes your DFS to go haywire. Goodluck.

    • Has your device always been working? I have 2 realtek wifi card laptops that always take 2 minutes to connect after waking the computer. I thought it was my router but it wasn't.

      • You mean my TV? It was fine with my asus router beforehand yes.

  • Does it work well with VoIP on mate communicate NBN with an ATA adaptor like grandstream ht802v2?

Not good for VoIP or what settings to change?

    • Got a Flint 1 for my parents, they're still running their old router for VoIP attached via eth to the Flint and it works well for them. It was some Optus thing.

  • Bugger, seems the AU plug ones sold out - US/EU still available so grabbed a US one and will sort out a power adapter here. Still cheaper than other deals with the cashback!

    • +2

AU back in stock, just got one.
      $152

      • +1

Appreciate the heads up! Have just ordered AU plug and will now try and cancel the US one, see if it's an easy thing or I end up with two routers lol.
