I've been eyeing this off for a while as I'd like to move to one single large screen for work, and this seems like a good non-gaming monitor that will be big enough for work across. Very open to other suggestions that are in this price range.

Does anyone have thoughts/recommendations about switching from two seperate monitors to one like this? I like being able to drag a program/tab from one monitor to another, and snapping to full screen on one monitor. Using Windows. I’m not a techy person at all so I appreciate any tips.

Are you on Windows 11 yet? My org recently switched us to 11 and it has a very helpful snap-to windows option that appears whenever you drag a window from one side to another - quickly snaps to half screen, quarter screen or full screen.

      • If you have an ultrawide monitor, it snaps to 1/3 screen as well which is amazing.

Hey, yeah you can do a similar thing with ultrawides. I use it all the time: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/snap-your-window…

There's also fancy zones in microsoft power toys and I'm sure other third party software.

      • power toys is my first install after every fresh install. cant understand why its not already packaged with windows.

    • +1

Microsoft Powertoys has a feature called FancyZones that will make creating Window layouts easy. I use a 34" Ultrawide and it's saved my bacon (for productivity and window management).

It really depends on your personal preferences. I would say if you're using it full screen like say CAD applications, then might be worthwhile. But for multiple different applications then not so ideal.

      A 34" 21x9 is basically a 27" 16x9 with ~25% bit extra width. You'll get more screen real estate with 2 monitors.

On top of that it's a VA panel. Double no.

      • What's wrong with a VA panel? I'm not familiar

        • I should note that I will never, ever game on this monitor, if that's a concern.

        • +3

Generally worse viewing angles but better contrast when compared to IPS.

There has also been a history of higher latency VA panels, which gets them a lot hate, but that actually isn’t applicable to all of them and will vary from model to model.

On top of that it's a VA panel. Double no.

Why the blanket hate for any and all VA panels? Of course there are bad ones out there, but fast VA panels are good, as are the Samsung's G7 Odyssey models…

      It depends - I went from 2 x 27" 2560x1440 to 1 x 34" 3440x1440.

Basically, the ultrawide is 21:9, so you get 21/16, i.e. ~31%, more width than a standard 16:9 monitor. As such, you won't get the same space as 2 x 27" monitors, but I do think there are some advantages - Excel spreadsheets are better because you can see more columns on the one monitor (without having to span it across two), I also prefer the cleaner setup on the desk.

Personally, I do quite a lot of work with two side-by-side documents where the ultrawide is actually a bit more comfortable. The issue is that having one document per 16:9 monitor is too wide and makes it more difficult to focus and compare across both, and having two documents on one 16:9 monitor is not wide enough. If you've used 4:3 monitors a few decades ago, a 21:9 is quite similar to 2 x 4:3 monitors side-by-side.

I also find that 21:9 is better for gaming, and if you watch 2.39:1 movies, it's very good (as 21:9 is 2.33:1, so you basically have no black bars).

    • if you will be using this for work and you always do screen sharing, this will not be an ideal monitor. you will need those with pbp feature for that.

but if for normal use, snapping windows just like others suggested works like a charm.

I always prefer having two external monitors. I could see only two reasons for switching to 1 ultrawide:
      - Your laptop only supports one external monitor, like my new MacBook. Then one UWQHD is better than one QHD. But, one 27" UHD is better than one 34" UWQHD.
      - You want to use that for real movie/gaming (where you need to focus 100% on that movie/game), then one bigger monitor with a higher resolution is better.

      • I am using 2x 24" monitors and I find it really frustrating. I have one main monitor centred on my desk, which has a built in camera, and then a second monitor off to the side that requires me to look really far out of my natural line of sight. Neither is curved, so it's a second, awkward straight line instead of a single screen with no split that I can see all the way across in my natural field of vision.

        • +1

I use Macbooks, with the built-in keyboard/touchpad, so the main monitor (the one with the taskbar, webcam) is usually the Macbook's built-in screen. The external monitor(s), whether one or two, are above that Macbook screen.
I never had a setup whether there are two curved external monitors, but when there are two, they are positioned angled with each other, resembling a curved 32x9 screen.

Back in the time of 4:3 monitors, I used to have 3 with my desktop, so the middle one was the main one.

Screen sharing is a Massive pain, imo. But apart from that it's fantastic to use

    • +1

I exclusively share specific windows instead of sharing my screen, and resize accordingly so it's easier viewing for others.

      • +1

yes, when the viewers ask me to "zoom in a little bit", I make the window smaller.

      • +2

Yeah, same with me, I can't believe that there would be people who take the risk of sharing their entire screen.

I've seen all matter of things go wrong when people do this - e.g. pop-up notifications for confidential emails or Teams chats, web browser with personal things open (e.g. bank accounts, online shopping…etc.).

        • People sitting their sharing their screen with no concept of me checking every one of the Chrome tabs they have open…

    • +1

I think people are already getting used to sharing one tab/one window, instead of sharing the whole screen.

  • Love to know if people think this refurbed Dell Ultrasharp monitor would be a better deal:

I have the dell ultrasharp since ~2015 that i bought refurb off the dell outlet. the 3415 is 2015 model making it a decade old. I'm not sure what the MSI manufacture year is.

      Dell Pros:
      Great image quality
      Lots of ports
      USB Hub
      Flat

      Dell's Cons:
      Capacitive buttons
      60hz
      old

the Dell is a great monitor but tbh i'd be looking for something else a bit newer unless you're on a tight budget. mine has had a few hiccups on the screen but somehow it's resolved itself and it's still going strong.

      • Thank you for the helpful feedback! I appreciate it.

bought this a few weeks ago from mwave. i also moved from one 27 inch monitor to this. I think it does the job.. sometimes i do feel a little squished, but i use the screen opn 125% zoom.. coz of eyesight. the speaker is small. and i feel the monitor menu is probably not as intuitive as BenQ, but i have gotten used to it. the screen quaility looks fine.. from a distance the angle doesnt seem good though.

    • Good price OP. I bought one last week (and paid more) as I needed it urgently to replace a broken 32" QHD ViewSonic flat monitor.

Like @cipher I also bumped the scale up to 125%. The built-in speaker is rubbish as expected. I didn't think the colours were amazing on it but it's for office use only and I much prefer splitting applications on this ultra-wide monitor compared to my previous one. There is an MSI Display kit application you can use to change colour profiles too which is easier than using the buttons on the rear of the screen.

    Thanks OP bought 8.

Jokes, only 2 and a kvm switch

once you go ultrawide you never go back… well at least for me anyway.. ;)

  • Is that a good for a vertical monitor or too big?

  • Hi folks,

Was thinking to buys, should I wait for any black friday deals or pull the trigger?

I need for office works (lots of excel) any suggestions if anything better or this is good enough?

  • Thanks OP, needed a monitor
