    Time to go dumpster diving

    • +31

I usually do it on Fri nights anyway so this is just an added bonus.

      • +6

        Same. It's a tough economy :(

        • +2

Agree, and I deserve at least one night out on the town.

        • They said it wouldn't be easy under Albanese!

    • +2

can I just get any cardboard box and just write on the box "Kungfu pizza"? I am a rival for sure :D

  • -8

seems like these suburbs have been tossers of the month. time to discipline and reward them

    • looks like 8 tossers Neged you for your comment.

    • You must’ve been teased a lot at school.

  • +67

Aren’t they just encouraging people to buy from their competitors before them?

    • +8

Exactly my thoughts. Probably why Pizza Hut is a regular feature on 'The decline of' YouTube videos.

      • +27

It's weird how Pizza hut has been on the decline.
There's a pizza hut where my sister lives and it's the best of the main pizza chain stores that I've had in a long time.
Way better than the Dominos I've had, for sure.

        • +25

100% agree. Pizza Hut is the best ‘junk food pizza’ out there.. and far better than Domino’s.

          • @msjb: I think I've only had one Domino's here in Australia but at least in the UK it has a certain taste. I feel like Domino's is barely a real pizza, it's so unique you'll either love it or hate it. I think the one I had in Melbourne was disappointing though, and the menu was quite different to the UK. Probably why I never went back!

        • +6

          +1 from me too.

I feel like this wasn't the case back when…but definitely now pizza hut as stepped up, and domino's has declined significantly.

        • +5

It often comes down to corporate or franchise.

I have 2 dominoes and 2 pizzahuts around me.

Both of them have 1 crap one (corp), 1 amazing one (franchise; at least, the dominoes for sure).

But the 'good' dominoes is better than the 'good' pizza hut; i asked the franchise owner why, 1.5x the toppings. Low cost to him, keeps people impressed, doesn't flag on the AI that rates to corporate as a 'bad pizza'.

          • +2

@MasterScythe: Sounds like you've got a good one. It's baffling the majority can't see it, if they do they're seemingly afraid of work. Any food vendor that acknowledges food isn't the cost and tries to satisfy their customers with a full belly knows that volume only increases sales; more satisfied customers, greater word of mouth, all returning for more, business snowballs.

          • +1

@MasterScythe: This was my local Dominos

I haven't lived there for years now, and where I live we have zero fast food chain/franchise stores.

        • +2

We had a Pizza Hut near our old place that did elite pepperoni pizza for $5 each. Was terrible for our waist line, but everything else has seemed like a rip off since. Now my nearest pizza hut is 20 mins away.

        • Similar experiences for us, Sunnybank has a horrible Dominos but Underwood is significantly better

    • +11

They are, but I would assume the idea might be you can see how much better Pizzahut is then the competition making you order from them in the future

    • +8

This might be smart advertising because it pushes you to compare. Could also backfire massively.

I didn't realise how bad the local domino's was compared to pizza hut until I compared em

      • +6

We have had Hut for a while and then tried local Domino's. Back to Hut it is!

    • +2

The idea isn't that you see that this is happening, buy a pizza from Domino's, eat it, and bring it along to Pizza Hut for a freebie. It's moreso aimed at those who already eat at Dominoes, are a recent customer for the product that is pizza, and want a free one, because you mind already eat Dominoe's regularly.

  • +4

Is there a limit, i can get a thousand pizza boxes for free, can feed the homeless all of melbourne and have extra

    • +6

Just says if you bring in a competitors box, you get a free pizza.
But its only from 4-7pm, so I doubt most people will have any luck getting one, probably going to be a lot of long lines early.

    • +3

      I like your strategy 👍💯

    • +1

Buy a 100 custom pizza boxes for $1 and say it's restaurant down the street that only some people know about.

  • +2

Gah, not another reason for the local meth tweakers to dig through the recycling bins…the can collectors are bad enough tossing everything all over the road.

    • +1

      ‘local meth tweakers’ 🤣

      • Sound familiar 🤔

    • +3

Fits the bill for Morley lol.

Also, pizza boxes aren't recyclable as they're contaminated with food waste…

    • I always wonder why this lady driving a 2023 SLK Merc digs the cans out of my bins.

Shes always in heels and carries a Louis Vuitton bag, always glammed up like a runway model.

My only guess is she's a trophy wife, and she wants some money the sugar daddy can't track….

      Still strange to me, heh.

    • If it feeds them and keeps them committing crimes then it’s a good thing.

  • +3

Morley used to house a great all you can eat Pizza Hut. How the mighty have fallen 🤣

  • What a strange promo, imo promos that offer free stuff don't retain consumers.

  • +2

"The promo plays on the idea of trading everyday “frustrations” for something much more satisfying". I don't think I've ever been frustrated by a pizza box. There is only a 3 hour window to claim the promo. Trade your 'frustrating' pizza box for a 'frustrating' queue.

As for easy empty pizza boxes, my Costco has a shelf/kiosk thing for people to put their empty pizza boxes.

  • +3

So you exchange one piece of cardboard for another piece of cardboard (disguised as food)?

  • Who knew? I'm practically printing money just by recycling cardboard!

  • -5

How do we find participating stores?

    • Read the OP?

      • -1

I'm retarded. Can't read either, apparently.

  • Dominos are going to be busy

    • +3

Dominos Runaway Bay to Pizza Hut Runaway Bay - right next door!
Dominos South Melbourne to Pizza Hut South Melbourne - 100m
Dominos Surry Hills to Pizza Hut Surry Hills - 280m
Dominos Forest Lake to Pizza Hut Forest Lake - 400m
Dominos Zetland to Pizza Hut Waterloo - 500m
Domino's Noranda or Domino's Pizza Inglewood to Pizza Hut Morley - both about 2.9km.

  • what?! so you eat one and then eat the other? is that the idea?

Edit: just looked at the participating stores. its a deal, but barely.

  • +4

.. So, they take my rubbish AND give me free food in the process… talk about a win win!

  • +13

I didn’t expect ‘selected stores’ to be literally six stores in the whole country (with just one in Victoria)!

  • +3

    What a weird promotion.

    • -1

      Good for her

  • This can keep people stay at the store while cooking rather than them pre-ordering like us ozbers.

  • SA missing out as usual

  • Does it count if I fold up some old cardboard and paint my own pizza restaurant logo on it?

    • Yes, go get in queue.

  • +3

Haven't had a stuffed crust pizza in years.

With cost of living pressures, gourmet pizzas that are more art than value for money at some places charging +$30 for 1 large albeit lightly topped gourmet pizza, I welcome pizza hut back into the weekly dining regiment.

  • +2

Darn, I fished out my boxes from the wheelie bin…. and then read the selected stores LOL

  • +1

Can they really make such a big deal of a promo like this when it only applies to 2% of the stores nationwide and lasts 3 hours? Talk about disappointing

  • +2

What's the limit per person? I can picture people with a whole tower of empty boxes waiting in line. One p/p?

    • +1

T&Cs on FB say one per person

  • Note: The FB event page for this has it occurring at 1pm-4pm WST. i.e. It's NOT going to be 4pm-7pm in our time zone but rather the same moment across the country which strikes me as odd. Probably needs to be confirmed.

    • Just called up, and they confirmed with the Morley store - it will be from 4-7PM

      • +1

Great minds! I just called Morley too and they said 4-7pm WST.

  • +2

5 people in line in South Melbourne. Pretty chill.

    • +1

Hey, I saw you, it was great to put a face to the name!

  • You get a free Bucket Hat too. White with Pizza Hut logo

  • +1

What if someone brings 100 boxes

  • there are no decent fast food, franchise chain pizza places………crust, pizza hut, dominos, pizza capers

    prove me wrong

    • Ooshman

      Edit: ahh Sydney only unfortunately

  • +1

So I train at a gym in South Melbourne and kinda knew this promo was on, but wasn’t really sure. I was just keen to get home when I spotted this manky ass domino’s pizza box on the footpath about a block away fro PH… I thought, “Gotta check OB" grabbed the box and headed into Pizza Hut.There were a bunch of Pizza Hut reps just hanging out inside. I walked up and showed the guy at the counter the box. He was like, “I dunno if we can accept that.. looks like you pulled it out of the dumpster". Im like, "been sitting on this box for a week” Then they sent me to this rep in the corner with about 2 dozen nice looking empty boxes stacked in the corner. He went to check with the others. I said “Mate, I didn’t wanna drag this filthy box in here for nothing!” But he said all good — just make sure you leave a good review.

I felt like a true ozbargainer from that monent forth

  • +1

They ran out at 6:30 at Waterloo and now they're taking email addresses for a coupon

I reckon they did about 40 based on the stack of boxes.

I managed to get in on time. The lady asked me if I'm ready to get stuffed.

    Pizza tastes like arse
