          One of the best Chinese car brand with out annoying drivers tech now days. You are just taking the piss mate.

            @Creamsoda: No experience with BYD and have nothing against them. My experience is with the mainstream Japanese and Korean, the implementations there are still frustrating.

            Just wish there was an option out there for those of us that want to avoid some of these features that both increase cost and increase frustration behind the wheel.

              There is, albeit not an EV, but a great price. Test drive a Mahindra 3X0. Bought mine two months ago and couldn't be happier. Features aren't annoying, has knobs instead of everything in panel and unlike so many cars these days, especially Chinese, has a centre console that allows comfortable leg spread (as comfortable as my previous Kia Carnival). Why car manufacturers think these massive middle consoles that cramp the driver's legs or having no knobs and everything in the screen are a good idea I don't know.

              @picket23: As a BYD Sealion 7 owner, I agree with you. My single gripe with the car is with the driver assist features. There are several that are honestly frustrating, and a couple that are downright dangerous. And frustratingly, some that can be de-activated for good, some that must be de-activated evert time you start the vehicle, and others you just have to live with.

              The collision detection incorrectly activating and slamming on the brakes while pulling out into traffic has caused the wife neck pain twice now.

              The lane detection pumping the brakes for a car in the turn off lane is a disaster in the making.

              The Lane assist taking constantly 'correcting' the steering to sit off centre to the lane can eat a bag of *$&%s.

              The driver monitoring system is constantly alarming that I'm tired, I think simply because I wear glasses.

              One of the most frustrating though, is the alert that takes over the stereo, each and every time you activate or deactivate cruise control, just to let you know that a normal function of every single vehicle since the 90s is in fact functioning correctly.

              In short, love the car, but hate some of the driver 'assist' features.

                The tiredness detection is from yawning or singing. I wear glasses and when it can't see my pupils it just says "not engaged" or something.

                ICC Activated and ACC Activated was doing my head in but the latest update removes these voice notifications for good. Have a play around in the settings and you can turn it off now :)

                • @coxjon: I don't agree with the tiredness detector, no yawning or singing, just getting told off every minute or two, until we turn it off. It might not be the glasses, as you say, but it's definitely not functioning correctly. Maybe the new update has some tweaks for this?

                  Good to hear that they have patched out the ICC/ACC activated notification though, I will do an update this afternoon when the wife gets home with the car.

          No matter which survey you look at, the data is clear: ICE cars are far more likely to catch fire than EVs.

          A broad view of the data indicates ICE cars catch fire between 8 times more often and 80 times more often than EVs.

          Even if we focused on the most conservative and least-biased data, we would be looking at a range of 8-30 times higher risk of an ICE catching fire than an EV.

            @ForkSnorter: What condition are the cars catching fire though? Seems like it'd near new, completely stock battery cars, but possibly 20 year old combustion bombs with bogans "upgrading" the fuel systems themselves at home. Any good sources to prove or disprove my hypothesis, or just raw reported numbersof each powertrain category?

            My understanding is the numbers also generally include fires not caused by the vehicle itself, such as arson or the truck's payload initiating the fire?

              Somewhat ironic that most ICE car fires start with the electrical systems and often batteries are the culprit.

              Also many fires happen refueling ICE cars but mainly due to stupidity or just bad luck.

                If you can find a way to 100% remove stupidity or bad luck from any process, wow are you going to be rich.

                @Ivana Tinkle: A huge proportion of (new) vehicle fires and subsequent recalls occur because of poorly secured flammable liquid lines (i.e. fuel/brake fluid) leaking on hot components.

                Occasionally electrical systems, but they're low voltage, so typically not, at most it's IPDM or like your link where it's a multi faceted control systems. I can't think of a single battery recall relating to fires for an ICE car.

                • @andyfc: I’m not an engineer but I worked in insurance and saw many claims where the investigation found the battery to be the cause of the fire.

                    @Ivana Tinkle: Interesting - lead acid itself is a very stable chemistry in relation to fire and this issue of flammable hydrogen gas was solved years ago with sealed batteries.

                    Presumably these are older vehicles that have aftermarket bits or shorts in near proximity that were blanket attributed to the battery. If insurance was identifying such fire causes it would make it back to the OEM for a service or safety campaign.

                    Unless this is in relation to aftermarket batteries - lithium ion, that are often secondary batteries for camping/caravans/ accessories.These batteries were generally not fit for purpose from heat vibration and is a significant cause of fires.

                    • @andyfc: It was over 20 years ago that I worked in insurance. So maybe it’s rarer now. From memory it was always older vehicles too. But it’s been a long time.
                      Also remember being told that it’s hard to find the cause in a car fire when it’s been completely burnt out and there are no obvious signs that it was deliberately lit.

              But the facts are clear: EV fires are extremely rare, but they're massively exaggerated by EV haters based on Facebook memes that take 5 minutes to create and share to thousands.

            Except if someone has 10, 20, 25k to spend on a large family car, or maybe they need a ute, maybe x,y,z. Only option may be ICE/hybrid, or only good option anyway.

            Point was we are still in a place where EVs aren't even an option, let alone the best one for many people's circumstances. Even if they want one. I want one, but there's nothing in my budget that meets my needs new or used.

            • @picket23: Yeah, definitely EVs don't suit every single circumstance yet. There's no good BEV ute in Australia.

              But, I would say that BEVs could replace the majority of new car sales and Australians would be better off. We just need price parity and charging infrastructure to continue at its current pace.

          I thought so too, but if it's a city runaround it's surprising how long battery lasts. Short trip of 5-10km you might use 2% battery (Atto3). You soon find chargers at various places you go so you just plug in occasionally when at woolies etc and it's full when you get back to car.

            @skibidigrimacmoggr67: I would definitely use it that way if I saw living in a large dual living house with my extended family, which is what I was doing previously.

            When we all lived together, we had a Falcon ute, an SUV for towing, a cargo van, a Getz, and a 7 seater minivan that we all shared.

            Would have been great to replace the Getz with an Atto 1.

              @BestTechAdvisor: yeah that's what I mean makes sense for a cheap small car.

              some people had objection to this but I think the smaller the car, the easier it is to drive, fit in parking spaces, harder it is to hit things. so makes sense for a car that is shared around a lot of different people, some who may not even own a car.
