All that effort for 2 years the watch is $679 isnt it better just to buy it without an insurance company tracking you?

Staying on top of your health targets earns you a free watch!
If you're member with Goodlife Gym, then just visiting the gym will fetch you points and you wont be sharing any of your data.

I churn health insurance regularly. I can tell you that you would save a whole heap more simply by churning through the various health fund promotional offers.

Programs like AIA Vitality are designed to lock you in. You are not getting a free Apple Watch; you are paying a loyalty tax.

      No deal from me.

        Exactly

      • please share some tips. i've been with bupa for way too long

      • Well it’s not just Apple Watch. If you’re able to accomplish all the weeks, you also climb up the levels from bronze to platinum.
You’ll end up getting $500 back in your account every year.
In addition to this you can get 50% discount on base fares of 2 Virgin Australia flights or Qatar airways.
You also get 50% discount on endota gift cards.

Apple Watch is just one of the offers from them.

Do we still get the $5 voucher by completing the activities for the week if we do the Apple Watch deal?

And agree the flight benefits and vouchers seem to make up for the slightly higher premiums plus missed sign up bonuses. I got $1500 cashback on an international flight which more than covers it!

          • @rocky7st: Yeah those flight discounts are amazing! Plus you score virgin points and status credits too.

You’ll lose $5 cashback with this deal. It’ll all go towards Apple Watch contributions!
There is a clause that you can pay in full if you leave AIA in middle of the tenure

You are just getting back some of what you overpaid (paid for in loyalty taxes). If you think all of the above is value for you, go for it.

I'd rather keep the dollars in my pocket than overpay then be made to jump through hoops for the promise of a pittance back.

I’m locked in because I enjoy the 40% at VA gym 🤷‍♂️ each to their own

    Been waiting for this

Side note - has anyone been struggling to get any workouts tracking lately? I've generally used "Other" for a 1 hour workout on the Apple Watch. Worked flawlessly for the last few years but the last 3 weeks it hasn't been giving me the 100 points. It hits the calories burned target. Sleep/Steps etc still tracking just fine. Their customer service replies are extremellllly slow. Would probably jump on this offer but until it's fixed up might just hold off.

They've gone from etika to Glow to do the financing side of things, but if it's anything like the previous offering they actually give you a $679 Gift Card for the Apple Store - it wasn't locked to the Watch AFAIK.

It’s stopped picking up “other”. Use something like indoor walk, works the same as the old other. Even if you’re sitting there.

      • ;)

        Thank you

      • Gave it a whirl while playing some games tonight, sadly don’t think it tracked, burned under 300cals/hr, will give it another try when actually active

    • Yesssssssssssssssssssss this has happened to me!!!

So, I have a Garmin watch, and both my sleep and my workouts come from there and automatically track - however I also track mediation (manually by entering the minutes mediated on the Apple health app) - it used to work flawlessly, up until their last update (about 3 weeks ago). Now, whatever I enter manually in Apple health does not track in terms of points on the AIA app. The odd thing is, I can see AIA picking up my mediation, but it's just not counting any points. I did a test case and tried to enter manual workouts (of which previously would both track and provide points), and same situation - it tracks the workout but no points.

Really annoying to be honest. I'm planning on leaving AIA after I hit my 35,000 points - hopefully later this year. I do enjoy how AIA give cash back (although, I'm under no illusion - that it's most cost effective to either churn or find cheaper deals), but I just find the whole AIA app finnicky to deal with, to the point that I would rather just churn or go elsewhere cheaper in which I don't need to jump hoops to get returns.

EDIT: Just to add, I also reached Platinum status last year, and as a result my recent hospital stay excess was fully reimbursed back to me as a result - AIA does have decent benefits, so if you're somebody who can't be bothered churning and want some kind of loyalty tax - this isn't a bad deal

      • Yeh I definitely agree and see why churning is worth it for a lot of people.

As for the app etc, something has definitely changed in the backend, looking through the app I can see the change happened around 17th of October (last time any sort of workout besides steps tracked properly in the app) according to their support it's a known issue and it's being worked on. They even hinted they'd backdate the points and the $5 weekly rewards too, but they wanted me to send a screenshot of each individual workout as opposed to the summary screen which was a wee bit annoying.

        • Yeh I definitely agree and see why churning is worth it for a lot of people

It's worth it for everyone, because even if you follow just the common 'pay 1 month, get 6 weeks free' offers, you will save approximately 58% off your premiums. It's a no brainer.

          • +1

@YesPleaseThankYou: I don't disagree, but churning can be cumbersome, especially if you are wanting certain things to be covered on your policy (i.e. requires you to look into the policy to make sure things are covered, that have been previously covered). Furthermore, when things go awry during the churning process, it be cumbersome to fix. This happened to me early last year when my previous health insurance didn't provide the correct documentation and as a result it look numerous phone calls (of which had a 30-minute on hold period just to talk to somebody (and of which took even more time to fix). It actually pisses me off, that health insurance companies still live in the dark ages and the way the transfer certificates are managed is via email and of which can be missed.

I used to work in health insurance for a few years in the early 2010-2020 era, and back then this wasn't unheard of. The fact that it happened to me on my very first churn early last year, to me, showed that the system is still stupid. I will note that the Gov. has attempted to clean up the health insurance industry by making policies more standardised across the board (which theoretically, should be easier to compare), back when I worked, honestly it was a bloody minefield at times.

Churning should be straight forward, and it generally is - but when things go wrong, it can be a cumbersome fix. As a result, some people would prefer to stick to one insurance company and just foot the loyalty tax. It's obviously not a wise use of money, but there are people out there who would prefer this, rather than having to churn constantly while also ensuring policies are matching their needs (even if it's not time consuming for you, it can be to others).

            • @eltito: Very salient points — agree with all of the above.

It's crazy, that in 2025, transferring between funds relies on a transfer certificate being sent around and applied manually to policies.

When things go wrong, I always send off an email complaint. I don't have time to sit on the phone.

  • Are the milestones hard to hit?
Can someone give an example of 5 of them?

    • +1

The goals get progressively harder the more you achieve. Probably start at about 350 points for the week then maxes out at 500 points for the goal. Main ways to hit this:

      Steps (per day):
      25 points: 5000 steps
      50 points: 7500 steps
      100 points: 12500 steps

      See: https://www.aia.com.au/en/health-and-wellbeing/aia-vitality/…

They also give points for certain workouts hitting certain heart rate / calories burned goals, distance goals and as someone above mentioned you can get 100 points when checking in to a partner gym too. Although the above page no longer mentions the calories burned aspect. App still mentions the calorie goals though, they generally need to be tracked through Apple Watch etc and not manually entered:

30-59 minutes at a rate of 300 calories burned per hour: 50 points
60+ minutes at a rate of 300 calories burned per hour: 100 points

      • So if you hit 12500 steps 5 days a week you hit the $0 pay?

        That seems pretty easy

        • Unless they've changed it, max goal is 500 points a week I believe so yep it should be that easy

    • Interested to know too.

  • buy this and you can complete your tasks

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/314765269524?_skw=Steps+Counter+…

    • Is the tracking gps based or only step based ?

      • Steps

  • My one still says "Coming Soon" in the rewards section.

Any workarounds to get to the redemption for this now OP?

    • Could be that you’ve to update your app.

      • Yeah i thought that too but after updating and restarting the phone it still isn’t available. I’ll try again over the next few days.

        • +1

Funnily enough I had it in mine but when I updated the app it now says coming soon haha

          • +1

@MBix: Hahaha, good to know that it's not just mine that it isn't available yet. I guess it will be very soon though.

It's too easy to miss your goals. Any company that wants to "lock you in" needs to be looked at carefully…

… and I see that Choice magazine investigated health insurance and AIA is a company with the most complaints (along with Defence Health).

Their investigation revealed the funds with the worst overall complaint ratings. Link behind paywall: https://www.choice.com.au/money/insurance/health/articles/th…

Link has only been updated today on the website for the new Apple Watch Series 11 offer.

There are other ways to take out a Vitality membership than through AIA health insurance. You can take out an AIA Priority Protection Life, TPD, Trauma or Income Protection policy and add a Vitality membership. These policies are available through online brokers like Insurance Watch. There is a minimum spend requirement of $690 (after discounts).

New Vitality members are also eligible for the $500 Silver Status Reward if they achieve Vitality Silver Status within their first 6 months - see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/840890

$500 bonus for new customers! What about exisiting ones ?

      • I don't believe it applies :( Often businesses reward new customers but forget about rewarding existing customers. I have always wondered why as it costs alot more to gain a new customer than it does to keep one.

  • To be eligible for the $500 Silver Status Reward you need to take out an AIA Priority Protection insurance policy.

You either need to add a new Vitality membership to the policy at the time it is taken out, or you can already have a Vitality membership through your AIA Health Insurance which can be linked to the policy. The six months to achieve Silver status begins from the date the AIA Priority Protection insurance policy is taken out.
