This is a data plan

can this be used on a phone that doesnt meet the VoLTE requirements?

I'd say no because they are using IMEI blocking to kick them all off the networks (bastards) - even the ones they mistakenly (lazily) think can't use VoLTE.

To be fair, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t make calls. I used to be on a Telstra data plan that allows PAYG calls and that was perfectly fine for me since I make about 2 calls a year.

Does that mean we can make calls as PAYG with this?

I'm pretty sure you just need any old phone with mobile reception to make an emergency call. ie - you don't even need a sim card. This is one big advantage of the cellular versions of smart watches - they should be able to make 000 calls without any kind of plan or sim. which is a lifesaver if you don't have your phone on you.

In Australia you can call 000 from a mobile phone even without a SIM card.

Also dial 112 in any worldwide it will connect to 000 local service

Woah i did not know this

Oh wow. So those optus customers, if they removed sim from phone it would have connected to 000? That is good to know.

Your phone will connect to any network it can detect, if it connected to anything but the Optus it would have worked.

@VeganJerky: Wasn’t the issue that Optus customers connected to the Optus network and Optus network itself wasn’t connecting to 000. Thus, and ironically, if those customers took out the Optus sim, they would have gotten through.

@VeganJerky: Ooo very interesting to know. I wonder if the phone gets prioritized to telstra.. Or a functioning connection at least. Good to know. Thanks

Sometimes with optus you can't reach 000 especially if you had a sim.

In most countries you can make emergency calls without a SIM. 112 is the universal emergency number in most countries around the world (including Australia), which is handy to know if you are travelling with or without a SIM as you don't need to know what the local emergency number is.

Can confirm this. My baby dialed 000 on my tablet without a simcard. The tablet still need to be a cellular model though in order to receive signal.

Will the network work when needed the most?
People run away in droves. A bit too late IMHO.

For extra $2.40 per month for 6 months, Moose Mobile has calls and extra 10GB
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/919144
Only last for half the time then prices jump

Not much different to Optus which jumps up after 12 months
Use 6 months and port, just as you would with Floptus in 12 months
With Optus, you can speak to their customer service, they might able to extend the discount.

@Richardc: Too much effort and wait. I can port 10 times whilst waiting. And success not guaranteed.

Moose has a 100 Mbps speed cap on 5G. Optus is uncapped.

Optus is unlimited data, speed capped after 30GB. With Moose it's $9 per GB after you hit your limit. Both have their advantages but they are very different products.

Yup - wasn’t saying one was better than the other, but just putting it out there if you’re not a heavy data usage user

Yes the throttled unlimited data is the reason I'm considering this. Nice find PhoneNerd.

Wait, IT STILL ALLOWS YOU TO OVERDRAW ON DATA?!
Frankly, that shouldn’t even be a thing. If you hit your data limit, either throttle it or shut off data service.

been on this for 10 days, and it works better than belong and 1E+36 times better than felix

A service that ensures you can't complain about the lack of 000 access regardless if it works or doesn't work

If you're already with Optus and wants a data sim so you can data share across your services and don't really care about this 30GB data, consider this one.

Only for watches though?

I think the link you want to highlight is this one
Apparently the physical sim comes with unlimited 1.5mbps cap. That's $10 a month, and the watch for $72. I'll be all over it if I didn't already have the pixel watch
Yeah i got it. But you can also get a galaxy 7 watch for same price

Is this post paid?

Yes

What’s Scotty’s payid?

Post paid but paid in advance. The long way of saying "prepaid+conditions"

If this had access to the Optus 5G+ (NR SA n8 900mhz) network I'd bite.

Vodafone Prepaid SIMs have access to the NR SA n28 700MHz network (I tested it on the $320 plan), it might be a good alternative.

Is this esim compatible?, just anyone has a question like me..thers a little mention up ther by the Ozcommunity, Shouldlbuyit though..can it be

Yes, if you proceed with the order, you've got the choice of the esim on the 2nd screen

Will it still do incoming calls and texts?

You are better off with the $10 1Gb watch plan that can be used as capped unlimited data in any device and you also get the samsung watch 7 or pixel watch 3 for $3 per month over 24mo.
This cheap plan finishes after 12 mo, but the watch plan you could have forever unless you cancel it

Thank you, once you sign up online does Optus give deliver a physical sim which you can use in other devices such as iPad or iPhone?
Optus live chat mentioning only eSIM.

You get a physical sim

Awesome thank you

Any tips or tricks on how to order online or in-store please? I am trying but Optus keeps saying digital sim on watch only.
I want to get the cheapest watch + $10/month plan with physical sim so I can use physical sim in my tablet.
Thank you

Do you know if my own number can be ported in? Or i have to use the number they provide?
planning to use the sim for my main number on my mobile.

@kehuehue: Don't think you can since this is a data only SIM (no calls/messages). SIM will have a phone number assigned but only for mobile data.

got a link? The one im seeing when searching says its 1c/mb
https://www.optus.com.au/content/dam/optus/documents/cis/con…

It says no excess data charge when you read plan details in optus link
https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/46868/125425/screensho…
https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/46868/125426/screensho…

add to that i confirmed it with chat as well. no excess charges

Can you still receive SMS and phone call? Do you still get to keep your existing number? Say after 12 months I may want to move back to regular plan and keep existing number.

It's data only sim

No issues receiving sms as it has has mobile number.

Though data only but i think there is still a number attached to it. Hence i want to know if i keep my existing number.

FYI I just called Optus, they said you can't bring in your existing number to this data only plan. So that means ppl can't call/sms you and more importantly if you ever want to switch out to regular plan in future, you will need a new mobile number. :(

with free amazon prime?

is there any way I can get a $10 standalone plan just for apple watch (byo)?

BetterRoaming has a plan for Apple Watch $11p/m or $99p/yr, with 7 day trial. However a lot of features get disabled when using it as standalone watch. Apple forces you to pair with an iPhone or use shared number to retain access to all its features.

Yeah but apparently it's shitty reception? Would rather optus if possible.

My wife and we have post paid Optus with plenty of data that we never use. What cheap SIM card I can get my kids, so they do get voice calls but can share all the data that we have (over 500GB/month)
Thanks

Get them this deal and use Whatsapp for calls/messaging?

Can you cancel anytime? If so is $10 cheap way to get free trials with streaming services?

Yes, you can. There are no cancellation fees and no lock-in contract.

I believe this is postpaid hence triggers a credit check. You're better off stocking up on the amaysim $25 for $10 prepaid offer
Heaps of Lebara starter kits for $8 too - but expired at the moment
Just activated my Amaysim SIM on Sat night and ported my phone number from Coles. I discovered Amaysim's1-3 days wait for activation is true, massive pain in the butt as most others do it 20mins

It probably didn't help you were porting Optus to Optus either & did it on the weekend.

I deleted my account years ago… but somehow I was able to still log in, without any active service….

Same

Same. And they couldn't verify my Medicare, I had to give my passport details, better not leak that Optus!

I'm guessing the answer is no, but do these data sims count for cashbacks?

Few of us tried topcashback. Have to wait and hope/see a bit longer

anyone tried shopback?

Does this plan support Optus 5G+ if used in a compatible device?

No 5G Standalone on the data plans despite being postpaid sadly.

Agree. My mum is living in suburban Adelaide. Where she lives is a small area that needs 5g+ and even this plan won’t offer that. You need to be in a quite expensive monthly contract to get this. As such she has no 5g at her place and the 4g is swamped and offers good coverage but terrible speeds. She is with Optus now but won’t be staying. Surprisingly Vodafone has the best 5g coverage at her home. It is the closest tower and we tried a cheap prepaid sim for a month on another phone at her place and the service was ok with Vodafone.

Warning that the plan will not work when overseas if you don’t pay, even for just receiving SMS/calls

I mean, it's a data plan. It won't work for that in Australia either (ok technically receiving SMS will work)

Thanks OP. I spoke to Optus chat and said 30 days to activate service from purchase date if anyone has the same question.

Great for my Lenovo Xiaoxin tablet, which I’ve now converted into a car GPS and entertainment system.

Nice! Tell us more!!!

Personally I thought he got straight to the point and added some decent context all in one short sentence.

Just wanted to know how, steps, tips etc as I'd love to do the same

based on his/her username, i reckon he/she would not share with you haha

You're right. I mau tau aja too, but he clearly doesn't know doesn't' want us to.

Sometimes I feel paying for Optus is just perpetuating bad service and disrespect towards Australians. Data breach, 000 issues and owned by Singtel.

Was planning on using this in addition to cheap phone & sms sim in my phone for data (did that in the past with other data sims), but I cannot activate it in the app. Customer support tells me it is not possible to activate it, can only use it for tablet or a mobile broadband router? Has anyone experienced similar issues?

I purchased the data-plan SIM a few years ago and it worked fine in my mobile phone. After reading your post, I contacted Optus and was told ‘the data SIM cannot be used in a mobile phone".
I was planning to buy one as a backup for my mobile, but I guess I don’t need to now.
Maybe try activating it on another internet connection without the SIM in any device, then put it in your phone.

If anyone does this successfully, please report back. Was going to put mine in a spare phone too.

It activates automatically after delivery is confirmed, well at least mine did

I've spoken to customer service about 5-6x now. Each one trying to work out why it's not working on my phone.
Not one agent has said to me that it's for tablets only and not for phones. They're hopeless!

Did you end up trying?

Nothing worked - I cancelled it. Was told by multiple reps that it’d against the terms of service. Won’t work as in the good old times unfortunately.
