CamelCamelCamel. But can i allow traffic into but not out of the iot network… my current router is old version of this and it doesn't. A stateful firewall that lets a more trusted network access the iot network for management and resources would be perfection. Otherwise these separate networks offer little security benefit unless you isolate them entirely.
I'm sure these routers still run iptables. If you wanted to, you can create your iot network then create a script (use chatgpt) to block all outgoing connections from a specific subnet. Have the script run each boot/firewall restart
You can block all outgoing, but this kills return traffic?
You can block whichever direction you want. By return traffic, do you mean your iot devices downloading something or you needing to remote in? you should be able to allow those types of connections
I can confirm the router allowed wifi network on their own subnet with their own IP. Its not the native IoT network but a customer setting.
Nice! I thought i got a good price at $399 last month
Its been a great router so far, covers the whole house at decent speed where the old AC68U wifi mesh network didnt.
That's great to hear.
Alright, darn, this is the lowest price I've seen it at. You guys think this is worth getting over the RT-BE88 which is also on a deal, but a lot more expensive.
How would you guys rate the BE86U compared to the BE92U & BE88U?
I might finally be able to update the RT-AC68U. I'm assuming if I pass on on these prices in might be a while before we see them again? Where would I go to check price history?
You can see the price history from the link in the deal post. Since this is a newer router we may not see many deep discounts like this any time soon (outside of prime day/black friday), but I could be wrong.
I would not consider the BE88U at all, it is actually the slowest of the 3 in terms of Wifi performance while also costing more. You can see that in this review where all 3 models appear in the Wifi performance chart.
Between the BE86U and BE92U one would assume the BE92U is clearly better with tri-band and at only $60 more than the BE86U (from JB). However if you look at the same Wifi chart from above, you'll notice the BE92U is indeed faster than the BE86U at close range but the BE86U clearly outperforms the BE92U at long range. This highlights the main weakness of the 6ghz band and walls will make it even worse. Definitely something you should take into account depending on your environment/setup. If you need the highest possible Wifi speeds and your environment allows for it, then go for the BE92U. Otherwise I would prefer the BE86U for the better flexibility and performance at longer ranges with a cheaper price.
Thank you!
I was in the same position myself (tossing up between models), this helps me pull the trigger on the 86!
You guys have sold me on it. Looks like it's out of stock, though :(. Do you think they'll have more stock.
Did you end up pulling the trigger?
One question about the BE88U (if anyone knows). Is that a true 10Gbps router? That SFP+ port, can that be used as LAN port or is it WAN only? I don't know much about SFP+.
I'm by no means an expert. The reason I didnt go for the BE92U is because I determined the 6ghz antenna wont cover most of my house anyways. I preferred the BE86U 4x4 5ghz antenna over the BE92U 2x2 5ghz.
I have not been disappointed. The BE86U provides coverage for my whole house where as my old AC68U with an AIMesh wifi back-hauled extender provided half the speed to the further areas.
To put it in laymen terms. The AC68U was giving a PC in the furthest office around 240mbps where as the BE86U is giving me 480mpbs - without needing an AiMesh.
Thanks. You've sold me on it.
Expired back to $519
FFFFAAAAAAR OUT!
Was flat stick yesterday and didn't have the chance to execute the purchase. Just came on to do it now - DENIED!
Same here. I went to try and get it yesterday, but no stock. I wonder what the chances are if I contact Amazon AU and ask if I can have it for the same price when they get more stock in? Do you guys think it's worth trying?
If they get more stock before the BF sale is over (Dec 1st) it should automatically return to the $369 price, has worked this way for past sales. Never heard of them honouring a price after the sale is over though.
@nategasm: Yes, I didn't think the would after the sale is over, but the sale is currently still going until Dec. 1st, so I thought I could ask while the sale is technically still on. I might try tonight after work and ask them if they can honour that price when it comes back (if it's back after the sale is over).
I'm guessing what you said is my best bet, though, to just keep checking and see if any stock pops back up again. Still got almost a week left.
Rather than Expired, it looks like Amazon's own stock is sold out so it is now showing Computer Alliance's price. If Amazon gets more stock within the next 7 days the $369 price should come back.
4 back in stock - or now 3 as I just grabbed one.
All stock gone again…
Crap. Missed it again. Is there any way to set up a notification when it comes in stock?
Yes you should add a price watch on camelcamelcamel for Amazon price: $370. Though sometimes it can be delayed so checking manually is still best.
@nategasm: Thanks. I'll do that now. Edit : Just set it up now.
Btw, I see some of the other new model Asus routers don't have the detachable antennas. Is there any advantage to have detachable compared to non detachable?
All the Asus routers I've had have usually had the detachable antennas.
@Ice009: There shouldn't be any native advantage to non-detachable, maybe they do it for cost saving? Though it doesn't make sense they would do that on an expensive model like the BE92U (Which turns me off that router even more)
@nategasm: OK, thanks. The BE92U was one of the models I was thinking off when I asked. With the detachable, can you replace them with something better, or do you think it is just the convenience of being able to replace them if they're damaged?
@Ice009: It's more for easy replacement when they're damaged. I haven't tried "upgrading" them as I've read it's not as simple as getting a higher gain antenna because these could make the overall range worse.
@nategasm: Thanks. I've been trying to order it, but can't. It won't allow me to pay for it.
Says "Sorry, ASUS RT-BE86U Dual-Band WiFi 7 Router, Supports 4096-QAM, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), AI WAN Detection, AiMesh Support, Subscription-Free Network Security, and Comprehensive VPN Features can't be shipped to the address you selected. Please remove the item or select another address."
Also, why does the deal say expired? Wasn't it supposed to run until Dec. 1st?
Edit : Have just been in live chat with their support and they say they can't ship to my location. I don't understand why. I have a feeling it's because I'm not in a metro area (I'm not remote either) and they don't want to pay the free postage that I should be getting with my Prime membership. That's my take on it.
@Ice009: Works for me, can you buy other stuff on Amazon? The error usually appears if you are outside of Amazon's shipping zone for certain items.
@nategasm: Yeah, I've got a couple of other items in the cart and they don't show that message.
I'm in country WA, about 400kms outside of Perth. Don't understand why it's outside any shipping zones. It's happened before to me on these good deals, but I didn't really need/want those items it's happened before on. This one I do.
@nategasm: Yeah, it freaking stinks. There is maybe an OzB member here that lives in Perth, maybe I could ask him if I can get it shipped to him, but I've never met them in person and I'd have to take a chance that he'd ship it to me after he receives it. Do you think I should try that? I'd have to pay postage from Perth to me, though. Not sure how much extra that would add on. That's also if the person wants to go to the trouble to go to the post office to do it for me. That's a bit inconvenient for them if they're getting nothing out of it. If I offer them money to do that, say $20, and then probably $25 postage, it negates the saving :(.
Amazon Business extra $15 off with code. Stack with $15 cashback on $100 spend on Amazon (ie buy gift card) via Commbank Yellow. Brings it down to $335!
How many of you guys can even get it shipped to your location? And are you all in metro areas?
why does it show me as $519?
Keeps going in and out of stock. Showing as $369 now
Edit: Gone again
$359 when paying with Afterpay or with a NAB card.
