Looks like a washing machine or a fridge

Be careful to pay attention this is the ET12 and not the XT12 - they have different use cases. ET12 cannot use one of the channels for a dedicated back-haul, so uses 50% of either the 5ghz or 6ghz channel, so works best with a wired backhaul.

    Cheers

    • A mate told me that with mesh routers, each additional node that you add to the mesh halves the speed. Is that correct?

Depends on the model - this is why the quadband ones are good, cos you can generally have one band for backhaul, and still have 3 bands at 100% for clients. Depends on your use case. For some, 50% speed is better than 0% speed! :) so worth it on the models that do that.

Thanks for the heads up. Having said that I’ve got the system now and you can actually set the back hall connection priority to 6 GHz. I found it works really well. No issues so I would not worry. Definitely prefer this model cause it’s Wi-Fi 6e. Range is crazy.

      • Did you buy just one? I’m torn whether or not to get one or two

        • Just added my second

          • @Captain Hindsight: Cheers, any idea if this has Guest Network Pro and the ability to setup a dedicated IOT network?

            • @travisty18: Definitely a guest network you can even activate it through Alexa etc. Not sure about the other.

          • @Captain Hindsight: @Captain Hindsight, was it hard to set the pair up? I’ve got a wireless backhaul set up , was it easy to set the connection priority? Is this done in the Asus software? I had a hard time setting up the XT8 before, so hoping it’s easier on this mesh.

              • @Captain Hindsight: @Captain Hindsight, thanks! How long did it take to set everything up? Do you reckon it’ll work if I install a pair of ET12s as the main mesh routers and add the XT8s as secondary nodes?

Mate, stumbled upon these on Amazon and was gonna ozbargain post myself lol seems like the price is out of whack they have full priced ET12s just below it at double the price!

    Grabbed 2 :)

  • Does anyone know if the software of this is the same as the other Asus routers (e.g. RT86U Pro)?
Also would this be considered a better router than RT86U Pro or are these two different routers for complete different use cases? I’m just after a better router at home and I’m sick of Deco range so looking into Asus but not entirely sure which one to get, this or RT86U Pro.

  • Key Differences (ignore pricing stuff as this seems a bargain)
WiFi Technology: The ET12 features WiFi 6E with an additional 6GHz band, offering 11,000 Mbps total speeds compared to the RT-AX86U Pro’s 5,700 Mbps WiFi 6. The 6GHz band is completely separate from congested 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies, providing cleaner data transmission and lower latency.[ezurio]
System Type: The ET12 is a mesh system designed for whole-home coverage, while the RT-AX86U Pro is a single router that can be extended with additional nodes. The ET12 comes as a 2-pack, making it ideal for homes where the internet connection cannot be centrally located.[asus]
Price and Value: In Australia, the RT-AX86U Pro costs around $364-429, making it roughly one-quarter to one-third the price of the ET12 at $1,500-1,900 for the 2-pack. This significant price difference is the primary consideration for budget-conscious buyers.[hub.triforce +2]
Gaming Performance: The RT-AX86U Pro includes dedicated gaming features like Mobile Game Mode, a prioritized gaming port, and Gear Accelerator for device prioritization. Real-world WiFi 6E performance shows approximately 56% faster speeds than WiFi 6 at 15 feet distance, but both routers have identical quad-core processors and 1GB RAM, so the difference is primarily in wireless technology rather than processing power.[comx-computers +1]
Coverage: The ET12’s mesh architecture provides seamless coverage across larger homes (up to 6,000 square feet per unit), while the RT-AX86U Pro relies on RangeBoost Plus technology for extended single-unit coverage or requires additional mesh nodes for expansion.[asus +1]
    Which Should You Choose?
    Choose the RT-AX86U Pro if:
    • Your internet connection is well-positioned for router placement
    • You want excellent gaming performance with lower latency
    • Budget is a primary concern
    • You need a single, affordable networking solution
    • Your home is small to medium-sized
    Choose the ET12 if:
    • You need coverage across multiple floors or a large property
    • WiFi dead zones are a problem
    • You want the latest WiFi 6E technology with future-proofing
    • Your home has poor router placement options
    • You can justify the significant price premium for comprehensive coverage
Both devices have identical processors and memory, so the choice comes down to coverage needs (mesh vs. single router) and budget. Given your location in Hurstville Grove (a suburban area), the RT-AX86U Pro would likely provide sufficient coverage for most properties unless you’re dealing with a particularly large or multi-storey home.

  • I read that wifi 7 is twice the speed of wifi 6E and will handle much more throughput

Trying to decide between this 6E vs a wifi 7 with wired backhaul

  • Just an update

I’ve had these running for about two weeks replacing what I thought was my dead Orbi 852 system but I’ve managed to factory reset and get the old one working. Despite this being 6e and supposedly having an amazing range which it does the netgear system has actually better range seems to allow similar speed when I do speed checks around the house. Also some old devices wouldn’t connect to this but would do to my old net gear so I’m sending the asus back to Amazon.

    • Yeah it doesn't work well for me either - my asus gaming router wifi 6 AX11000 has better range and my wired backhaul isn't far enough to make the most of the range. What's the returns policy like after opening it?

Amazon policy suggests if packaging opened they won't take it

      • Not sure if that’s the case for change of mind returns I just returned the power board that I used for a week.
